Austrália doesn’t need less professional players, it needs more. NRC Players receive nothing much more than gym membership money. No wonder young talent goes to league. Wouldn’t it make more sense to eliminate the $1m pay cheque’s 2 or 3 wallabies make and instead spend that money on 30 or 40 hot young prospects at $70 pa who would otherwise be snapped up by league.

How to fix Australian rugby, Part 2: Reducing operating costs

I had great expectations from this series of posts, but sadly post #2 seems poorly researched and frankly more than a little naive. Limiting to 50 contracted players will lead to every other talented athlete immediately heading off-shore or to league. It will mean amateurs playing professionals in whatever new domestic league you want to imagine, with a massive step down in ability should the wallabies suffer a couple injuries in any given position.

Under this model the Wallabies won’t just be well beaten by the All Blacks, they will be obliterated and league, AFL and Soccer will celebrate the demise.

Seriously disappointing article.

How to fix Australian rugby, Part 2: Reducing operating costs

It was a fascinating World Cup. The All Blacks prepped to beat South Africa and Ireland and probably thought they would meet and beat South Africa twice. England prepped to beat the All Blacks and did, but that was their final. Japan prepped fo beat Scotland and did (that was their final) before losing to South Africa. So South Africa With a great rotation policy on game days found themselves with an easy run to the final (assisted by the Washout) and became the last team standing.

Has South African rugby let the genie out of the bottle?

These guys can now look forward to not playing any rugby for the next 12 months before slipping into obscurity. Rodda will eventually make a good buck with his Wallabies credentials (though not what he hoped for in this new world). The other two will play some club rugby somewhere for average wages until they get injured or their form dips. They will then look back on this wondering why they gave up on the dream of representing their country and playing in a World Cup.

Reds trio terminate contracts with Reds and Rugby AU

It’s telling that the Hurricanes have had amazing backs but rarely produced a solid forward pack. Forwards still win tournaments. Just look at what happened in the world cup.

A New Zealand XV that hasn't won a Super Rugby title

Surely getting rugby back on free to air and visible to the general public is preferable to another lock-in with fox with its shrinking client base.

Hamish McLennan confirmed as new Rugby Australia chairman as World Rugby funding lands

Slightly unrelated but related matter: Does anyone no (with confidence or better yet proof) how much of Super Rugby revenue comes out of the respective Sanzar partner TV contracts?

Im trying to get my head around whether an ANZ tournament is actually viable.

Clarke promises to stamp out RA factions

Yes it will have 16 members which is an excellently high number assured to reach no agreement at all.

CONFIRMED: Peter Wiggs resigns from Rugby Australia board

Has anyone tried finding Rugby on Kayo Before covid? It was buried, invisible. A tactic by Fox to dampen the viewing figures and cheapen the price perhaps?

Momentum clearly building behind trans-Tasman solution

NZ Rugby won’t trade out their players. That will be non-negotiable. Super Rugby is NZ Rugby’s high performance program. They will want to keep close control over how players are managed.

Momentum clearly building behind trans-Tasman solution

I agree Corne. The champions league is an exciting concept and could be run like a mini tournament at a hosted location (so travel factors are removed).
The champions league may in fact include top qualifying teams from tournaments all over the world… Pro14, Trans Tasman, Top League and whatever South Africa decide to create with or without Argentina. But it must be short and sharp.

The pull apart and restitching solution for SANZAAR

The world league doesn’t need to change the 6 nations. They can continue their traditional rivalry, if room is allowed in the calendar for traditional rivalries against non world league ranked sides (eg Italy)

New Zealand Rugby launches major Super Rugby review

I can’t argue with that logic. Why stop at trialist?

Australian rugby has its problems, but Raelene Castle was not one of them

If I’m right the review panel contains roughly 6 people… 3 from Super Rugby franchises, one from New Zealand Rugby, one from the players association and an independent. A nice pizza sized team that may be able to find agreement.

How big is the review panel for Australia Rugby? 16? Good luck with that.

New Zealand Rugby launches major Super Rugby review

I’m pleased your Club experience has been a utopia. But frankly you’re naive if you think club rugby is devoid of politics. You can also park your Anti kiwi sentiment by the way. I’ve made a home here. My son calls himself Australian. I’ve devoted thousands of hours of my time to the betterment of the players and club I’m associated with and despite your assumptions I actually care about the future of Australia rugby. My guess is that Castle faced exactly the type of nonsense you are on about. But of course, she couldn’t possibly understand, because she’s not from here.

Australian rugby has its problems, but Raelene Castle was not one of them

All I can say is it’s been my experience. Player revolts at club level when a non old boy was put in charge. Other very good coaches overlooked for the top job presumably because they weren’t old boys. It is quite literally an old boys club.

Australian rugby has its problems, but Raelene Castle was not one of them

I agree with you 100% kicker. I believe the spectacle began its downhill trajectory when we increased the number of replacements and it became standard practice to sub an entire front row and most of the forward pack.

That allowed players to get bigger as they wouldn’t have to last a full 80min. It also meant the opportunity for the little guy to create a mismatch late in a game by standing up a tired big bloke was diminished.

Reduce the number of subs and keep the ball in play for longer and watch the body shapes change and the excitement factor lift.

Australian rugby has its problems, but Raelene Castle was not one of them

That comment seemed unnecessarily spiteful.

Australian rugby has its problems, but Raelene Castle was not one of them

8 years in Australia as a player, coach and fan and a few things have become abundantly clear.

You can’t coach a 1st grade side unless you played for said side, you can’t be a Wallabies coach if you weren’t a Wallaby and you definitely can’t be a CEO of RA if you are not Australian and god forbid a woman.

Rugby in Australia is a closed shop. Leave your new ideas and modern approaches at the door.

Rugby in Australia prefers it how it was and always has been… male, privately schooled and amateur.

Kearns lives in our neighbourhood. Seen him at the Rugby club twice in 8 years. Gregan also in the same neighbourhood. His son plays in the junior club. Never seen him.

Captains' call offers nothing by way of real Rugby Australia solutions

This all assumes Ireland get past Italy and Soldier field and the baby Boks beat Japan in tokyo.

Just sayin.

Ireland vs All Blacks to decide the best rugby team on the planet

Absolutely agree that coaching in Australia is broken at ALL levels. I spent 3 years coaching at a Subbies club in Sydney. I met nothing but resistance from the established coaching hierarchy for any modern coaching techniques. They were coaching in the same manner as I was coached in New Zealand 20 years earlier. It’s laughable how out of step they are.

Michael Cheika needs coaching help, because plan A is not working for the Wallabies

I think this is a great concept.
1. Fits into the existing July and Nov windows
2. Fast format (only 2 pool games) will encourage upsets (lose once and you are probably toast)
3. Broadcast rights can be sold by world rugby and distributed
4. Gives lower ranked teams exposure
5. Gives teams outside the 12 something to aspire to.
6. Doesn’t take the aura from the World Cup (two games and then a 4 month break for 2 more games is hardly a grueling campaign)
7. World ranking in prior year can determine participants (making rankings always important rather than just a snapshot in time every 4 years)

Great concept. Love it!!!!

League of Nations is an idea worth discussing, but…

I understand the concern about reducing the aura of the World Cup but I think that’s mistaken. To win a World Cup teams need to play 7 internationals in 6 weeks and beat at least 4 other top ranked sides (3 in consecutive weeks) that’s a massive ask. Where as in this tournament teams play only 2 pool matches and then have a break for 4 months. This provides a great opportunity for lesser sides to get up for one big game. It then requires only 2 more wins and you take the trophy. It’s a fast format that will encourage upsets and may throw up some interesting finalists. But no comparison to a World Cup campaign.

League of Nations is an idea worth discussing, but…

@hoop This is the genius of the idea. There are only 3 games (2 per team) in each pool. This fits perfectly into the July window. If you make semi and final that means maximum 2 more games, fitting into the Nov window.
