I’m an England fan but spent quite a few years in Oz so always take an interest in Aussie teams and like to see them do well ( Don’t worry, I’m well aware that sentiment is never reciprocated! )

If you wonder why Australia have so little talent it’s probably because people like “The Secret Scout” are the ones looking for the talent. He seems to have a very high opinion of his football knowledge but dismisses players from countries he doesn’t like.

The song was released for Euro 96 and was lamenting England’s poor performances/results since the ‘66 World Cup and the hope , sometimes unfounded,of a sports fan . Its become a bit of an anthem for fans (more random fans rather than ‘normal’ fans) at Euros/world cups ever since.
This weird misrepresentation by almost all others , including Stu , which I’m surprised about, that it’s an arrogant chant about England inventing football is bizarre to say the least.

I’m an England fan… there’s no disputing he edged it , it’s just that (and Scott is contributing to this) it’s transmogrified to almost a square cut to point and he didn’t walk…. he just edged to keeper who palmed it to slip…. confusing for umpire, end of.

Lockdown just started over here in UK and SkySports are doing a “Retro Monday Night Football”- just showed Viduka getting 4 against Liverpool for Leeds in a 4-3 win.
The style of play weirdly looks dated/much less technical than what we’ve been treated to in the P league the last few years but Viduka really was sublime.

The results have been because the S Hemisphere have generally ,always had the best teams (Abs obvs, and SA, and occasionally the Wallabies!)

It’s a knockout cup competition and and there’s no magic ingredient or one team was a country of 57 million’ and the other a team of 23 professionals…it’s just the way it goes in a one off final…c’est la vie.
