Giants can definitely win this. What I’d love to see is a second ruckman chop in for Mumford 50/50, Phil Davis recalled as a fresh back with great knowledge of Cameron’s craft, and a punt on Callum Brown in what would be his second ever game in the forward pocket – he’d have nothing to lose and a lot to prove. Beyond that Jesse Hogan may well have a bag in him, Cogs is finally ready to properly influence, and Geelong can hopefully maintain their deliciously strong whiff of fatigue and panic. Finally if a win could sit Gerard Whateley down for a bit, by gee I’d take that too. GO GIANTS!

Missing stars and no love lost: Geelong Cats vs GWS Giants AFL finals prediction

More teams do force the AFL’s hand to put together a fixture that is fairer and rational. The current fixture is cynical and greedy, and dubious at every turn. It basically mocks the punter. Wild idea – play each other once every year, alternate the home/away, and promote and capitalise on the currency of it being a one-off event. The issue with Tasmania is so sad. It’s a no-brainer that they should field a team in a national competition, but it gets too hard too easily. The biggest sticking point for a team after you might tick off on all manner of feasibility issues, is where do you put them? There’s a silent war going on between Launceston and Hobart when it comes to a whole host of investment opportunities and projects, and on this topic they’ve basically cancelled each other out of the conversation. I think Tasmania as a ‘state’ team is probably off the table for this reason. Could it be a ‘city’ team then? By this point the AFL is yawning and Gillon’s dreaming about his next thoroughbred investment.

Time for the Tasmanian Devils in the AFL

Always nice to read a Giants article that’s about football. Seriously well-informed too. They’ll struggle like 17 other teams to get a place in the 8, but they’ll need all sorts of things to go right to win a flag. Luck, confidence, a team system, and break-out years from any three of Himmelberg, Kennedy, Hopper, Langdon, Flynn and Taylor. Could always get a surprise from Hately and Caldwell too. As a fan from the very beginning it’s been a fun ride watching them develop from a laughing stock to a genuine pain, and what I’d like to see most from an expansion POV is a Grand Final appearance. A Cup can wait. What this club needs most is mass exposure, and a natural status in Sydney that can push back hard against the sour set in Melbourne. They’re up against it for sure but it’s been a really solid start for this little club and I wish them the best as they enter their 8th season.

2019 AFL season preview: GWS Giants

Yes very interesting times ahead for the Giants. I’ve been following them from the very start and have enjoyed watching a whole slew of them turn into elite, professional players. To see the vultures circle at an opportune time is the way the market works of course but it’s all the more frenzied when it comes to a team and club who’ve built up a great deal of resentment of late. They’ve rarely got any credit for their successful retention of quality people and players, and as a fan I hope they can push back a bit, keep building their identity, history and culture, and even a bit of soul. And if another bunch of quality talent re-sign on significant unders in 2019, expect dead silence until the next whiff of blood. It’s the way she goes when you’re a concept borne out of Victoria that’s become successful. It’s a bit like, “you’ve had your fun, now give it back”.
