I’m no Arnie lover, but you can’t really compare him circa hiddink to now. He obviously has his own philosophy, that is working for him. Something he didn’t have when he was caretaker.

Who are the contenders to replace Ange Postecoglou?

The one immediate result i’d like to see is the ” shots on goal ” stat. We just cough up more opportunities than anyone i’ve seen.

I think the need for an australian coach proved itself correct last time. Someone who’s here, who knows the culture and has continual access to the majority of the players. As far as current points on the board go, Arnold would probably sneak in. In saying that, the one that excites me most is Josep. There is all kinds of crap going on in turkey, so Popa might jump at it. Whoever it is, we DON’T have time at all. First we need a bunch of friendlies to practice what ever new philosophy is introduced to the squad. One slightly important job for the new guy is to get our boys to remember where the bloody net is. Our record in front of goal is totally crap.

Postecoglou resignation just another challenge for FFA

I’d rather see Izzo between the sticks in that situation.

Our road to Russia is no more difficult than any other nation's

One slight problem that might have had your friend laughing VERY loudly back at you………They managed to erase our chance of an away goal advantage..

You are dead right. We seem to have this perverted enjoyment of making things harder than they need to be. But..i’m tired of talking about it. To my way of thinking, Ange took risks at certain times when we should have been happy to play an ugly game for the points. Nothing breeds the familiarity of success like ” winning ” does. I’ve been around the game 10 years longer than ange. I didn’t get to coach at a league level or represent the socceroos. I did represent at state level and played alongside some of australia’s big names. Point is..i’ve had enough time to understand the game too. There have been times where Ange would take a sharp left hand turn leaving me thinking….Noooo..this isn’t the time for that. Consequently, i was right. I truly admire what he’s done for the australian game over a few years. There are times when i think he’s eaten too much cold ice cream and it’s frozen his brain too. But i firmly believe the reason we are in these playoffs is down to poor choices. I have to ask of him….” Is this it….can you as a coach go up another level…or have you exhausted your natural resources ? “……I’d love for you to go on and grow, but i need a sign, so , if i have to, mentally, i can move on too.

Plus you throw in the fact that in australia there are many , many more kids playing football now than league or union……and the numbers are only going to increase.

My mixed feelings about the Rugby League World Cup

But…at the end of the day we do what we can to support our respective games. I grew up playing 4 codes. I love it all………but our games are not games any more…..they are businesses. How ever, i will say one thing about league…………the rules in their current state are a total joke. Nobody knows the rules,…not the ref’s or the players. They’ve ove rcomplicated a simple game. That is what’s hurting league. I see so many exasperated people switch off because of it. I love the Aussie game today when both hookers were pulled up for striking prematurely……..Striking at bloody thin air, seeing as the ball goes nowhere near the feet. I looked at the ref in total amazement, thinking …” so this is what it’s come to ? “

That’s fair enough. On one hand you have Football……which is like chess..on the other you have Rugby League, which is like ten pin bowling, simple and basic. That’s a good thing.

My mixed feelings about the Rugby League World Cup

Hmmm ok….I haven’t seen every game…but, there’s a certain weirdness to see australia line up against another country , whose team has any number of ex australian representative players on their side. It’s a bit like the american baseball ” world series ” where only one country is represented. I’m not sure how it works in league, but in football, a player who represents another country would be signed along the lines of a Marquee player. That in itself would have an effect on a club’s salary cap. I think i noticed about 6 of the teams with long term NRL players in them. The aussie games lack the venom of a cricket ashes series against the poms. I said to someone a couple of years ago that i was worried about the effect of the NRL clubs buying extremely affordable players from the nearby islands. When you take in a player who is bigger, stronger, faster and cheaper than you and then you teach him all your tricks…it will come back to bite you on the arse. Don’t get me wrong, i love watching the Fijians and Tongans and love how far PNG have progressed……but…the livelihood of australian players is at risk. Why are there not as many young players coming through the ranks ? Because those spots are taken by imports. When Tonga becomes world champs and australia is relegated to 3rd or 4th top team, i fear aussies will slowly stop going to games. As a nation , as much as we support the underdog…..we crave to be on the winning side.

Well said Stuart.

Remember when the back pass was legal.

Boz…help me out. Why would a keeper playing on a soggy, bouncy, unpredictable pitch, continually put his defenders under pressure and risk losing possession of the ball ball by playing out from the back , playing the short pass when the opposition are marking high ? To my way of thinking, you’d have to be an idiot ? I looked at Ryan this morning , great stopper that he is and thought jesus man grow a brain. Or is that the result of instructions from Ange. Who ever it is needs a boot right up the clacker. So do those poor excuses for linesmen this morning. In 60 years of football, i can’t remember ever seeing such incompetence running the line. My other beef is, given the fact i wouldn’t risk Cahill’s ankle on such a pitch, Juric is way too heavy footed to be of value on a pitch like that. Rukka should have started the game with Juric on the bench. As for commentators saying, we’d be happy to lose one nil or even a nil all draw….on an away leg ? Who taught those clowns to count ? Honduras now hold the advantage. Now the PRESSURE is right back on the Ozzy side. ” Old and exasperated “.
