Super Rugby? Seriously??

'Lying is a sin': To'o takes aim at Wardle, referee 'making assumptions' with contentious try as Wigan upset Panthers

Bevan French would be a great 5/8 partner to Ben Hunt at St George. I’m no Dragons fan but if I was I would be screaming for Dragons Coaching staff to start making enquiries into his contract situation with Wigan! And Jai Field looked good too, that try saving tackle late in the game was spectacular. Another example of how some players require abit more patience with development. Too many NRL clubs are just too harsh and too impatient when it comes to player development. To think Cody Walker debuted at 26 how easy it would’ve been for him to be lost to the sport or to Super League.

'Lying is a sin': To'o takes aim at Wardle, referee 'making assumptions' with contentious try as Wigan upset Panthers

Why would the NRL buy Australian Rugby? The only potential jewel on offer is International Rugby and no International Union would accept to play League against the Kangaroos. Silly idea since League won’t ever revert back to Rugby Rules and Union will never admit to their mistake of 1895 and adapt League rules. David Moffett would have better luck bringing Harry and William of Windsor back together!

10 reasons league and union should merge to become One Rugby - and give AFL nightmares

So true regretfully

NRL Round 1 predicted teams: South Sydney Rabbitohs - If Latrell fires and Wighton fits in, Bunnies can go all the way

Tom Burgess a great player and I really hope Souths send him out with another Premiership. Will be a strange feeling watching next year with no Burgess in the Squad.

Double blow for Bunnies star out SIX months on sidelines after surgery blow and another leaving for Super League

True that toupee held up under water conditions. But like most Bond films the Villains were the true stars and that flick had two charismatic villains.

Peace in our times: How long until the NRL is disrupted by another Super League-esque competition?

You can Never say Never (not a bad remake of Thunderball) but the NRL admin at the moment seem to be running a smooth, professional operation. They are open to new ventures such as the Vegas games and inclusion of new teams (hopefully Bears and Jets in some new region) and I feel they would also be open to new partnerships. So it would make it less likely for a potential rival to swoop in. The Super League initially started in a large part due to the perceived slights that the regional teams felt from NSW Admin. The Broncos were the main instigating party and whilst success can furnish opportunities for rival Corporations I feel that any potential Super League type threat relies on the growth of the game Internationally. At the moment we still are a small fish in the larger sporting world and it would take a larger expansion offshore to garner potential interest from major sporting raiders. Locally we just don’t have enough financial whales to worry about at the moment.

The opportunity exist for League to capture the Rugby name in the USA. Apart for those few Ivy League Colleges that play the Union version, most, if not all Americans have a very faint idea of Rugby. If League can get their promotion and marketing right, off the success of the Vegas game then the idea of what Rugby is for the average American could very well be the League version.

Reaching a fractured US rugby league market will be difficult - even when the NRL actually targets the right code

No surprise when looking at the success of the Wallabies in the glory years it revolved around two states and the combinations of key players playing alongside each other or against each other on a consistent basis. 5 Super Rugby teams can not be sustained for the simple reason we don’t have the players or the spectators, public interest to make all 5 viable. Super Rugby is dead but unfortunately too many Administrators are in denial.

Fears for Rebels' future as debt threatens their Super Rugby existence - but CEO says 'we will be fine'

Dragons need at least two good Seasons to become a credible place for potential recruits. They need to either secure a few good wins against some of the top sides when those sides are at full strength and obviously squeezing into the finals would be a huge bonus. If they can demonstrate that they are a club on the up with good up and coming young players, they’ll be an attractive club. The biggest long term issue they face which is the same issue facing the West Tigers, is the geographical pull between two distinct geographical locations. Surely, Dragons future belongs in the Illawarra (juniors, emerging fans) but it is almost impossible to see a CEO or the Board having the courage to pull up roots from the Ancestral/Historic roots of the St George District.

Dragons recruitment left in disarray as ANOTHER key target turns down Flanno's Red V revolution

The old mid week, pre season comps were great for teams that lacked the necessary depth to compete for the big premiership title. It gave those clubs something to cheer for and for hope that better days weren’t far off.

When grown men wept, Steelers prayed and nobody was there: Six of rugby league’s most dramatic late tries

“The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” Albert Einstein. Old Albert was spot on and why Rugby in this country is doomed. The administration are committed to doing the same thing over and over again. Super Rugby Competition is dead, it can’t be revamped, rejigged or resold. New revamped National Club Competition is the only solution, with the winner playing the equivalent NZ Champion. 12 teams (4 NSW, 4 QLD, 1 ACT, 1 Perth, 1 Melbourne and 1 Combined Pacific) 22 Round Competition, Top 5 Finals. NSW and QLD state teams play 3 Game Series.

Super Rugby clubs want a handout? That's a disgrace, the game is already broke

The 1994 Tooheys Challenge Souths vs Broncos and the Craig Field try to put Souths back into the lead with 7mins to go. A great game with great tries and and a great David vs Goliath story

When grown men wept, Steelers prayed and nobody was there: Six of rugby league’s most dramatic late tries

2nd Ashes Test 1990 has to be the greatest last gasp try of all time. Ricky Stuart dummy from inside Aussies 10meters and then the surge upfield to offload to Meninga.

Spot on article but change and Rugby are Water and Oil. Don’t mix

Rugby needs a revolution - if the game is to endure then penalties must be scrapped for all but three reasons

The competition is dead but the Doctors are too scared to pull the plug. The whole Super Rugby competition needs to be scrapped, declining crowds, declining ratings and declining interest. A better idea would be for a streamlined club competition (Perth and Melbourne and ACT included) in Australia and NZ with the winners of each competition then playing a “Super Bowl” Final. The Australian State teams of QLD and NSW play a three game series.

The need to make Super Rugby stronger and viable in the long term means it is time to expand back to 14 teams

He makes some good points but unfortunately won’t realistically work. A player draft would be the natural solution but was struck down as for the player transfer window good idea but clubs would still find a way to sneak around any set of rules. It is in the very DNA of League Clubs to skirt rules and bend regulations.

Demetriou calls for cap on salaries for young players to prevent poaching like Roosters luring Suaalii from Souths

I love thinking big lol and taking a punt, but seriously with careful long term engagement and planning I think it would be a worthwhile gamble. The reaction to the Tonga teams success at the 2017 World Cup with the very long car convoys in Waikiki by Tongan expat supporters showed their was strong local interest that could translate into long term interest if nurtured. Lots of Tongan and Samoans reside there or go to study at the Mormon College. In my mind a far better proposition with potential greater benefits than a PNG/Pacific team based in Cairns.

Using the NRL as a political football for your Pacific solution is a dumb idea, Albo - and a waste of taxpayers' money

It seems this little gem was missed by a lot of people “It’s all being done in the schools, that’s where the damage is being done” say what you will about Sayonara Eddie but he is spot on with that quote.

'Hold firm': RA urged not to blow Suaalii deal as Herbert shifts focus from NRL, Eddie rejects 'horse guy's PR'

I’m a broken record on this but if you truely want to expand the game, think big and incorporate a Pacific Island team, then there is only one worthwhile risk and that is planning a Team in Hawaii. Hawaii gives you the facilities, the finance (sponsors), potential exposure to US market, potential fan base (Tongan/Samoan expats, Aussie/Kiwi tourists) and no competition from Professional US sports franchises. Hawaii is crying out for an event to bring in more tourist dollars and there is a real Hawaiian Identity crying out for a point of difference with US mainland.

Using the NRL as a political football for your Pacific solution is a dumb idea, Albo - and a waste of taxpayers' money

What’s interesting about Albo is that he is very much a man of institutions. Notice how he loves Souths but never says he loves Rugby League, he loves the ALP but never says he loves Australia. I believe he just sees the PNG team as another institution that will create good vibes good news but with little long term benefits. Institution first actual benefits second. A PNG team based in Cairns won’t benefit PNG, the NRL and a change of Australian Govt could very well see the Tax funds withdrawn and then the NRL are stuck with an asset poor club relying on funds from a PNG Govt that let’s just say isn’t a stranger to corruption or political manipulation. Recipe for disaster

Using the NRL as a political football for your Pacific solution is a dumb idea, Albo - and a waste of taxpayers' money

China’s Belt and Road initiative is the biggest infrastructure program undertaken since the 1945 Marshall Plan which rebuilt Europe after WW2. To think our response is to either sign a worthless document agreeing to Climate Refugees that will most likely never need to come or to fund a PNG club based in Nth QLD shows the unserious people we have in Government (on both sides), a very sad reflection on the state of the West.

Using the NRL as a political football for your Pacific solution is a dumb idea, Albo - and a waste of taxpayers' money

I can’t see too many current Union players being signed up but I think you hit the nail on the head in this article regarding the lure for young players and for Player Agents to up the contract payments with Union by talking to a League Club. Without a huge player pool to begin with, this potentially could further cripple Union in Australia. Without the means to match NRL payments they will either lose top talent to league or overseas Rugby.

Don't mention the war chest: NRL gearing up for rugby raid makes strategic sense but won’t change much

The point is to highlight the silliness of your argument. English Rugby is struggling and a lot of players just aren’t interested in Playing Rugby in France or Japan. Don’t get me wrong France especially the south is fantastic with great food wine culture and history but it doesn’t mean it appeals to everyone. Australian Rugby needs its best players playing in Australia and the whole overseas argument trotted out by diehards is embarrassing. As an Australian fan of both codes I don’t care about French/UK/Japan Club Rugby. The state of the Union game in Australia is a disgrace and the Lions/World Cup may be potentially poisoned chalices and not the gold tickets everyone supposes.

NRL powerhouse target Wallabies young gun as replacement for Suaalii

Very good, analytical article. I concur for the most part but think Tallis Duncan has real potential to be a stand out backrower and Peter Mamouzelo has to be on the bench or perhaps even start with him to save Cook the early heavy defensive work and put Cook on around the 25-30min mark to take on tiring defenders.

Smart Signings: Latrell and Wighton could be great together - but Souths are far from the finished article
