Being a long suffering Lions fan i like your prediction of 3rd. Personally i just want them to make the 8. The only game i am confident in is against the Suns. So the Lions will need to win 2 others to get to 13 wins, which will get them into the 8.
I think people outside of Brisbane are talking up the Lions more so than Lions supporters. Most of the supporters i know are hoping that they stay competitive long enough into each game and we will come away with a win hopefully half of the time.
Also the Lions have had a good run with injuries over the last 2 years. Hodge and Hipwood are likely to miss this week ( i hope they aren’t named). So a couple from the NEAFL will come in and play a role. The Lions have only debuted 3 players this year Answerth (10 games), Hinge (2) & Starcevich (1)
I will be a happy chappy if the Lions finish 5th or 6th and get a home final.
As Fagan says each week we are only concentrating on our next game and improving as a team overall.

Your AFL team's run home: Part 1

Good article on my team the Lions. The loss against Carlton was hard for fans to take but after Bolton’s sacking not entirely unexpected. They are doing better than most expected prior to the start of season. Preseason i had them winning 2 of the three of Carlton, St Kilda, & Melbourne. Melbourne being the loss. I still think they can win the next 2 games after the bye against Saints & Demons. If so they are back on track for the 8.
Making the 8 will be a big improvement from 2018 and a great result for the Club and fans.
Being competitive for the remainder of the year is more important.
Cam Rayner is probably suffering from the 2nd year blues, but you are correct that he did not turn up in great condition for preseason training. Not sure if he will learn much playing in the weak NEAFL competition. It may give him more confidence purely by getting hold of the ball more often. I will leave that to the coaches to make a more informed decision than us fans.
I find our 2 ruck selection interesting. Are we just getting games into McInerney in case Martin who is 33 and out of contract this year, returns to Melbourne as he has indicated previously. I notice Reilly O’Brien and Sam Jacobs from Adelaide are both out of contract this year. O’Brien is playing well in Jacobs absence.
Lions making the 8 will make my year as the previous decade has been a bit hard on us fans.

Brisbane Lions mid-season review

According to x team mate Jordan Lewis in a Fox article, Stratton the Hawks Captain no less has been using this type of tactics for over a decade. So Clarkson is not going to do anything. Regarding comments about fines and umpires, this article (link below) has photos of the umpire smiling as he continually did little punches to Charlie Cameron’s arms and chest throughout the recent game against the Lions. Cameron only had 6 disposals for the game but 2 goals.
The article is in regard to Steve Hocking stating in November 2018 – The League plans to take a very strong stance regarding “on field niggle”.
To date i have not seen any indication that this is happening. Usually it is the midfield taggers.

Ben Stratton's controversial 'pinching' tactics on Fantasia- dirty, or fair play?

My initial thought was a bit of a dive from Miles. But if you watch it again, number 34 Parsons from Geelong pushes Miles to the ground. Who knows what the MRP will do. It was high with a closed fist, intentional but low impact. So what ever that penalty is he should get. Then of course he can appeal if he gets suspended. If it was some other type of player in the AFL they would get suspended and do the time.
After Ablett got off a few weeks ago Mitch Robinson from the Lions on his face book page said (tongue in cheek) something like ” so it is okay to use an elbow to the head – Cool “.

Is Gary Ablett in MRO strife again?

The Lions first quarters in 2018 were terrible. So far in 2019 it is much the same. So this needs to improve. If they are close to the Pies at quarter time i give them a big chance. As a Lions supporter it will be great to attend The Gabba with a near capacity crowd. Collingwood will have about 40% of the crowd support i would imagine.
Lions lost centre clearances 15-9 last week, and with the 6-6-6 rule this is a crucial stat in my opinion.
Hope it is a good contest, could go either way but Lions by 13.

Brisbane Lions vs Collingwood Magpies: AFL Thursday night forecast

Plans for the redevelopment are mostly for The Gabba Precinct. You have to catch a bus to get to the Gabba. The nearest rail station is Park Road or South Bank about 25 minute walk. So the $5.4 Billion cross River Rail Project incorporates The Gabba Precinct. Construction is well under way but still a few years off. Will be great for the area.
The two links will explain in far more detail.

Lions and Pies set for Easter Thursday Bris Vegas showdown

Can i assume you mean Brisbane Cricket Ground (BCG) members. If so according to the Gabba website this figure is 4,200. I don’t believe it is as hard to get membership for the AFL season as it would be for MCG. Not sure of the cost though.
Full Seating
34,735 General Admission- These the Lions sell
4,200 BCG Members – Cricket sell these.
2,609 Corporate- Lions Sell
228 Wheelchair Seats
228 Carer Seats
42,000 Total Seating
However the last 2 years there is a section called “The Veranda” a ground level bar and food area located behind the left goal post at one end. This would slightly reduce capacity.
I have noticed the BCG section during Lions games is well patronised over the years.
The Gabba has not been in jeopardy of selling out since the 3 peat years.
Even during this period the new stands were being built at the Gabba.

Lions and Pies set for Easter Thursday Bris Vegas showdown

Will be at the game and anything over 33,000 crowd will be great. Crowd numbers will depend on Cricket Ground Members turning up and Corporate Box sections being sold. Atmosphere should be good with crowd split of 60/40. As a Lions supporter i just hope the 60 is for the Lions as the Pies have a good following in Brisbane. The Lions still have a first quarter problem so they need a good start. In round 7 of 2018 at the Gabba the Pies got up by 7 points in a cracker of a game. Hope this one will be of the same standard as the Lions don’t get many free to air games.
Peter, Beamsy will have a good game as players usually go well against their old Club.
Weather in Brisbane is fine with a possible shower.
Bookies have the Pies $1.62 favourites so i hope they get this one wrong.

Yes i think some new rules have changed the game.

The ones in my opinion that have had little affect are -Ruck Contest and Marking Contest are just another rule adjustment which could change again in the future. – Kicking for goal after siren, i have not seen any player using this so far, but i don’t get to see all games. Fifty meter penalty change. Well the players are starting to work out how to get a benefit from playing on, rather than trying to milk another 50. Maybe later in the year it will evolve. I personally hate the 50 meter penalty. Umpire Contact at Centre Bounce. – From the games i have watched this happens regularly but i have yet to see one free paid. The call can’t come from the umpire bouncing so has to come from the other umpires. Has anyone seen this type of free paid this year???.

Not much effect so far are – Marks/Free Kicks For Defenders, this rule at least give a bit of choice as to which side of the ground players can go to, so is a good change. The kick In After A Behind, i thought would be a big change but for some reason the games i have seen, the short kick is still being used way more than i imagined.

So the two i believe have changed the game.
Runners And Water Carriers – This one the fans won’t even notice but the Coaches will have to make big adjustments to communicate to players. Some coaches already starting game on the interchange bench and staying there. They can make all the game plans during the week they want but came game time this can all go down the drain quickly. Also player rotations, player dehydration, big notice boards on boundary that players ignore if the can get away with it. That’s assuming they see that far. Anyone out there in the know, could add a few other problems that coaches did not have to deal with last year. Coaches tactics can and do win games.
The 6-6-6 rule is great. It opens up the game. In round 4 a total of 193 goals were scored so an average of say 22 goals per game. That’s 22 times coaches cant put someone behind the ball. They can’t double team a forward on a roll without leaving someone else free inside 50. No matter how quick players are inside that 50 meter arc they can’t get to the contest unless the ruck punches it a long way which they rarely do. Should they try to get to the contest they run the risk of their opponent being free so they can roll that dice if they wish. Same applies to wings. In tight games last year coaches would not only put a +1 in defence they also had wingers dropping back late in quarters. So a bit harder to defend a 3 goal or less lead this year.

Well that’s my take on rule changes up to round 4. But we have 18 rounds plus finals to go so let’s see how everything evolves from now on.

Have the AFL's new rules actually changed anything?

Richie- but it won’t be paid in the back.
. No point in hoping for an in the back, unless it is a different circumstance.
Players and coaches will have to adjust and so will the fans.
However we all know what constitutes a free in rounds 1 to say 5 somehow is not for the rest of the year.
Personally i like all the new rules for 2019 except for the adjusted 50 meter penalty rule. I didn’t even like the old 50 meter penalty rule at all. From memory it was introduced for wasting time and has evolved to cover other things.

The AFL must review the rule book
