Chief performance Officer?

Exclusive: Top RA executive quits after just 292 days - with high performance review writing on the wall

Thank you very much , Brett, for all your articles and your excellent podcast, all of which are most enjoyable. Have a very Happy Christmas and New Year.

Right then, what do we need to see from Australian rugby in 2023?

And the number of cards are increasing not reducing so what they are doing now isn’t working.

The Wrap: Rugby still in a fuzzy, concussed state but seismic change looms from an unlikely source

Yes I have. You are missing my point.

The Wrap: Rugby still in a fuzzy, concussed state but seismic change looms from an unlikely source

You have misunderstood. I am all for preventing brain damage. Heavy fines after matches is one way that would better to achieve this. The way it’s going now is people are abandoning the game in droves.

I don’t understand why nobody seems concerned at the impact these cards are having on the results of games. In my opinion matches should be decided by 15 players on each team and offenders punished with cards should be replaced immediately and dealt with after the match. It is really frustrating to see, for instance, London Irish leading Montpellier convincingly only to then lose the match when they are down to 13 players. This is happening over and over. The whole idea behind allowing injury replacements way back in the 1960s was an acknowledgment of the fact that rugby was a physical game and there should always be 15 players in each team.
Once a team is reduced to 12, 13 or 14 players you might as well call the game off and award it to the numerically superior team. No wonder it is becoming very difficult to get decent sized crowds these days.

It’s like asking the turkeys to vote for Christmas.

Well written. Thanks.

I would add World Rugby to your list.

Their job is impossible. The Laws are seem to be far more open to interpretation and some, like scrum feeds, are ignored completely.

Hmmm. I really am not sure what Rassie is trying to achieve and the way he is going about it is highly questionable. However for those who have been watching rugby for many years, there appears to be something amiss with the way the gGame is being run.
Now that rugby is professional there is a lot of money involved but the management of the game seems to have regressed since the amateur era. Referees seem to have a far bigger influence on outcomes than before. With Laws so open to interpretation, surely March officials should be managed in a way that reflects this?

I think we are underestimating Italy a little. Their teams don’t do too badly in the URC and they beat a strong Wales ream last year.

Indeed. I think the referees job is well nigh impossible. Maybe they need to be managed in a way that acknowledges the complexity of the Laws.

The Wrap: Unwrapping the heartbreak and redemption from a buzzing weekend of Test rugby

Thanks Geoff, but it’s not just South Africans that are fed up. We have friends in New Zealand , Australia and the UK, rugby men all their lives, who are no longer watching the game because they find it is impossible to follow. None of us support what Rassie is doing but he is not the only coach that is complaining. Referees are far to involved in outcomes but World Rugby appears to be oblivious.

The Wrap: Unwrapping the heartbreak and redemption from a buzzing weekend of Test rugby

Geoff,
Thanks for another good column.
Although we don’t support what Rassie is doing, it is worth noting that many, many rugby fans, former players, who have been watching the game for many, many years, are absolutely fed up with the impact that referees are having on the outcomes of matches these days. Yes, the Laws have become more complicated but it appears that the referees are managed very poorly. Although they game has become professional, the administration appears to be
more amateur than it was in the amateur days.

Thanks Harry fir another great article.
I received a text this morning which said the Boks will be kicking themselves after losing that test, but they will probably miss!!

Agreed. Like putting the ball into the scrum and lineout straight.

Thanks Geoff. It is very unclear.

I wonder. The Laws allow the tackled player to “play the ball”. Should the jackaller allow him to do so , or is he entitled to go for the ball immediately?

Me too. Also the walk back to Princes Street in the rain.

I’ve watched tests a Murrayfield. Very hard to win there if it is cold and wet – which it is, normally!
