No reason the private schools can’t keep offering scholarships and great if they keep doing it. The issue is that this approach, unfortunately, is not playing the odds. The ARU is outsourcing its recruitment to an agency who has conflicting objectives and limited market penetration. It has little control over the job description and it fails to put itself, in a crowded market place, up the right end of the consideration, set as a result.

It’s time for Australian rugby to embrace a new hiring philosophy

Yes, it shows a level of rigidity that is difficult to fathom. It is frustrating to observe his decisions when I would love to see some alternate options with the 10,12,13 combinations. Ultimately; michael’s neck, michael’s call, though. I think that is the right system to have, but it is just unfortunate to watch a coach lacking the introspection and flexibility required in that system for it to be most effective.

Bernard Foley and lessons from 'A Beautiful Mind'

PK, it comes down to Chieka preferring a player that plays his game plan and doesn’t deviate off the script too far. Ultimately, power and control are his main drivers and he manages this by providing certainty for a few and keeping everyone else guessing. I would suspect he subscribes to the theory, loyalty first and skills/talent second. Interestingly, if you get the balance right, the lack of the latter solidifies the former. I think his selections reflect this.

Grotto, if that is the case then there is big skill gap once you drop below those three. It is difficult to argue Foley has a game that is leading the Test standard at this stage, I think. I’m not sure Cooper or anybody else is the answer, but I would like Chieka to practise what he preaches and create competition in that position…like he has done for nearly every other position…except for 7 and 15.

The extent of the turnaround is what makes Bledisloe 2 loss sting so much

Not sure I agree, Fionn. It was good coaching from Cheika to keep him on. Genia had a great 80mins on the weekend. He did pass to kb for the wallabies last try afterall. I think Hooper had a fairly average game; scores too high here. Foley’s defense is improving, albeit from a low base, but his passing, kicking and game management is just not good enough. Shame, as his straight running is refreshing.

Wallabies DIY player ratings vs All Blacks Bledisloe 2: The results

Thanks, Nick. There are certainly things i like about Foley’s game. I like it when he straightens the D, but his kicking and passing is unfortunately sub par for test level. I think quade’s game would benefit alot if he took it to the line more or held up the defense with straighter running every now and then.

The Wallabies' defensive woes show the need for connectivity and communication

Thanks, Nick. Good article…probably because it reflects my own observations. I am interested that not many people are talking about Foley’s game. The wallabies forwards and half backs provided a reasonable platform for him to influence the game and he was wanting. More obvious were his deficiencies in basic skills, they are just not test standard. Interested if you’re observations are similar?

The Wallabies' defensive woes show the need for connectivity and communication

Yep, spot on, H. The problem is that too many people, from the Board down, have locked in their support for the current coaching regime. I fear it may take some time to topple.
