Burns went before this latest situation. Shibasaki hasn’t “signed” with Souths – he is from their feeder club in Townsville so they have the right to call on him

Round 10 Team Lists Late Mail: Souths pick two unknowns, Leniu, Herbie return, Storm duo out, Broncos' surprise half

Missing from Souths this weekend will be: Gray; Munro; Gagai; Graham; Milne; Ilias; Hawkins; Murray; Host; Tatola; and maybe Johnston will not be ready and possibly Arrow out too.
Souths in disarray? Could any team, including Penrith, cope with such a dire situation?
In the game against Penrith only one of what would have been the regular team was in the backline – Tass.

Round 10 Team Lists Late Mail: Souths pick two unknowns, Leniu, Herbie return, Storm duo out, Broncos' surprise half

Ben Lovett (Souths) is out for most, if not all, the season with the same injury that Papenhauzyn had.

NRL Round 1 Predicted Teams: Eels star faces ban, Gilbert gone for year, Hess hobbled, Dragons get double boost

The one name missing in this report is Tyrone Munro. He will keep Tass out of the wing spot.

Smart Signings: Latrell and Wighton could be great together - but Souths are far from the finished article

What is most wrong about Kent’s comment is he ties it to rugby league. The game is not in any way the issue or answerable – only Kent is. If he was News Ltd journalist writing on health would he then be able to say it is a hospital “soap opera”?

It’s Kent’s alleged behaviour that is the core of this; it’s nothing to do with the game of RL.

Paul Kent's domestic violence charges are far more serious than just a 'rugby league soap opera'

I don’t get how the rankings get done. Souths, without a number of key forwards missing through injury (Please note The Barry: No mention of Souths injured either) beat Manly at almost full strength yet Manly move up the rankings and are placed three places higher? Please explain or else have an investigation!!

NRL Power Rankings Round 4: Brilliant Broncos, terrible Tigers - and all the surprises in between

Watch the game against NZ again and see how much decisive tackling Mitchell did. And then ask why was he denied the ball in attack. The play consistently went to the other side and he and JAC were left to their own devices. If Mitchell had gone roaming to get the ball he would have been criticised for being out of position.

He was no flop.

Kangaroos Tops & Flops: Mal gets the big calls right, but Latrell and Nathan need to do more

So good to see Campbell Graham in there. So under-rated and still only 23.

Kangaroos World Cup squad named: Edwards snubbed, Tedesco captain, 13 debutants chosen

Whilst it is true that Penrith are the best team and should start favourites this week don’t underestimate Souths. Penrith have won 4 of their past 5 encounters but apart from the 26.12 first round win this year the other scores have been close – in fact, 4 points last time is the next biggest margin – and that was in the last minute of the game.

Souths also had players out in some of those games, including Tom Burgess and Latrell Mitchell. I think Souths have given Penrith the most trouble including last year’s GF.

Fifth time’s a charm: Can Souths turn yet another preliminary final into a premiership?

I missed one – Sele is also out. That makes nine.

The Roar’s NRL expert tips and predictions: Round 17

I hope punters realise Souths have at least eight players out either with SOO or injured: Alex Johnston (according to those observing training), Graham, Host, Arrow, Cook, Murray, Nicholls, Knight

The Roar’s NRL expert tips and predictions: Round 17

I don’t get the ranking of the Roosters. They are ahead of Souths yet are two wins behind them. They have been on a slide for a few seasons now, ever since Souths put 60 points on them. Have they beaten a team above them yet? And whilst they have played well against top teams they have still lost. Souths have lost two games by a point this year and one was v Melbourne in the bleak city.

Roosters are an ageing team with little upside just now.

NRL Power Rankings: Cowboys, Souths, Sharks up, even worse news for Tigers and Titans

So Martin gets a 6.5 because he made 51 tackles and tried his heart out yet Cook makes more tackles (56) with no misses but wasn’t at his best wit a 5.5? Makes sense, not!

Blues player ratings: 'Insipid' star's worst game for NSW, 'brutal' Raider who stood out in the gloom

No Campbell Graham, this year’s standout centre? No bias here?

The undercover POPE: 13 NRL players having sneaky good seasons

Annandale anyone? Imagine if they and Glebe were still in and the residential rule applied!!

Never mind the Bears, bring back the Dirty Reds

Did Coote play second row in any GF? Anyway, as you acknowledge Jack Rayner I recommend he be coach of your team.

Done and dusted!

The greatest grand finalists of the last 70 years

Good as he was I rate Johnny Dougherty over Clay as 5/8. Rayner always said Dougherty was the best player never to have played for Australia (though he was selected but was injured before the test). Dougherty was in at least three GF wins.

The greatest grand finalists of the 1950s

The 60-8 defeat by Souths late in the 2020 season has been the start of the decline by the Roosters. They never recovered from that and the injuries in 2021 gave a cover for their decline. Remember when Souths lost Inglis and Sam Burgess during the season yet no allowance was given by critics to them. The Roosters are an ageing team and need to regenerate. Is Suaalli the answer? He is untried among the big boys and with the Morris twins now retired I can’t see the Roosters being favourites for some time, especially as their forwards – like JWH – are getting old in the tooth.

They got knocked down and they got up again: Why the Roosters are so successful

So Souths lose Reynolds, Gagai, Su’A and 14th man Marshall and will drop down the ladder yet Penrith will not though they lose three of their best in Burton, Capewell and Naden with no consequence?

NRL season review and crystal ball Part 4: Manly, Souths, Panthers and Storm

Of course many will debate the ratings but one that stands out to me for correction is Tom Burgess. Only 7.9?? Almost the same as Leniu (heard of him?) The comment he has got things out of his game and improved makes me ask What things? Please don’t say dropping the ball. He has never been one to do that unlike his twin. Yet commentators don’t look at the details, just follow the crowd.

If you look at details you will see how damaging he has been running the ball. He rarely, if ever, runs for less than 100 metres and sometimes he runs over 200. His missed tackles are a very low number.

But, hey, he’s a Burgess.

Mountain Men vs Glory: Season player ratings for the 2021 NRL grand final teams

Those two tries are called junyard tries. Good description!

Errors just kill you: Talking points from South Sydney’s rout of Manly

Don’t you remember Souths had two tries disallowed also?

Errors just kill you: Talking points from South Sydney’s rout of Manly

One salient point to realise: Since the Round 11 game against Penrith in Dubbo, Souths have the best defensive and attacking record in the competition. That is over 15 games.

The Roar’s NRL expert tips and predictions: Preliminary finals

I know the selection of Penrith to beat Souths is only opinion but a closer scrutiny of their previous clash should give some pause to any certainty of a Penrith win.

I their last clash the elephant in the room was the referee. A 11-2 penalty count to Penrith (with one to Souths given in the opening minutes) was so one-sided. Also that same referee gave it 12-3 in their first round clash yet Souths are overall the least penalised team in the comp and Penrith the fifth most penalised. Even Annersley admitted in his presser the try just before half time should not have been awarded and the ‘downtown’ penalty has not been given to any other team before or since that one. That penalty led to one of their tries.

The other thing noteworthy is that, despite the overall possession by Penrith as a result of the penalties, Souths led that game up to 15 minutes from the end. So it was by no means a ‘trouncing’. OK, so Mitchell won’t be there this week but that last game he was not that good anyway.

The Roar’s NRL expert tips and predictions: Finals Week 1

I always appreciate Mascord’s writings and opinions but disagree here. Robinson was dead wrong as has been his club and their lackey media mates. What happened on the field with Mitchell was a culmination of a game-long acts of bad behaviour by Roosters players and officials on the sideline. Even the back-up referee had too much of it and needed to move away from the toxicity.
Yet the Roosters are hard done by! They were flogged by Souths again but no narrative has been written on that.
Then last night it came home to roost! Tries from knock-ons, missed conversion given the OK, penalties galore against Canberra but not to them – Robinson wins again. This is a coach who never gives credit to the opposition and is now being promoted to be coach of the year.

The 2013 precedent NRL should have used to let Robbo off the hook after Abdo's intervention
