Out of the Wallaby playing group’s hands but let’s hope from 2021 onwards the Wallabies play at Suncorp as early and often as possible. Sydney is a graveyard for them yet so many times they go to Brisbane with series already lost and then put in great performances. If 2020 Bledisloe 3 was at Suncorp who knows how the rest of the season may have panned out.

A promising Wallabies start leaves us with the same unanswered questions

That’s right but you can’t “take over” leadership while the leader is still there on the field! Mutiny is the last thing this team needs.

The Wrap: Wallabies mauled by resurgent All Blacks

I’m glad there’s some discussion here about the leadership (or lack thereof). With a young squad and debutants aplenty due to injuries, on-field leadership becomes even more critical. No doubt Hooper is highly respected as a person and a player by his teammates but surely there needs to be questions asked about his role.

Unfortunately Hooper’s tenure as Captain has co-incided with a very dark period for the Wallabies results wise. His post-match “losing analysis” is getting very repetitive.

Slipper, Toomua, DHP and Liam Wright all have leadership creds – even the more mature JOC could step up. And Fraser McReight seems destined to be a Wallaby captain.

It’s time for a change.

The Wrap: Wallabies mauled by resurgent All Blacks

Another name to consider is Stephen Pitt who resigned recently as CEO of Golf Australia.

Has had various roles in sports admin across a few different sports and has a reputation for implementing restructure programs.

However financial results of Golf Australia were not great under his leadership (unsure if there were mitigating reasons or not).

Who should take the helm at Rugby Australia?

Thanks Brett. Fantastic piece. He’s seems to have come a long way since the “Brand James O’Connor” and 3am Hungry Jacks days. Redemption stories are always compelling.

Hopefully we can start to see a bit more positive commentary around Rugby after the sh*tstorm of the last few years. Who knows … maybe I’ll open on The Australian on Friday and find an article from Alan Jones talking up Rugby Australia.

The spiritual third-coming of James O’Connor

Love this rumoured team lineup and the centre pairing, bar Beale. If Ford and Farrell are going to rain Garryowens all day we need DHP there.

Reports: Petaia set for stunning quarter-final start

So Thor offers bullocking runs – sounds pretty much what a good prop should do in general play. Don’t expect them to be a playmaking flyhalf. Plus you forgot he’s probably one of the best offloaders in the forwards. What exactly does AAA offer in general play that Thor doesn’t? I’m not disagreeing that Thor coming on as impact player has merit but I don’t see why it’s much better to start AAA. If anything Thor has had some discipline issues and a case of the dropsies but around the field he would be superior to AAA who is more of a scrummaging prop (something Thor used to be actually much better at but he’s been spooked by some refs he thought his scrum dominance had to be illegal.

Just their best performance of 2019: the Wallabies' simple quarter-final assignment

Well said DCM. Some of this “stop the ref bashing” response has a PC feel about it. Who decided that the age old “We wuz robbed” theory wasn’t allowed anymore. Mistakes happen and yes we all have to move on but that doesn’t mean the mistakes didn’t happen. So feeling aggrieved is fair enough. But it doesn’t excuse churlishness, bad sportsmanship or accusations of cheating/conspiracy theories.

As Geoff says that’s simply the imperfection of sport. Perhaps Geoff is being a little PC but more likely he’s suggesting the universal truth that you win some and you lose some.

The Wrap: World Cup thrown into beautiful, glorious confusion

Good point KCOL. Toomua only played last few games for Rebels (and maybe contributed to their slide??) yet got picked whereas Jones, Quade and co were in lots of people’s RWC squads up until around Round 14 when Rebels started going backwards (and cost Quade, Jones, Philip, Meakes, Maddocks and co their shots at RWC squad).

Very inconsistent of Cheika and other selectors.

BTW – I’m actually a born and bred Reds supporting Aussie … not from SA.

Wallabies name 31-man squad for 2019 Rugby World Cup

But Uulese is in the squad??

Wallabies name 31-man squad for 2019 Rugby World Cup

Tom Banks and Liam Wright should consider themselves very unlucky considering Dempsey and DHP are in there. And AAC is just plain crazy. Also can’t understand why they’re taking Foley when he’s now so far down the pecking order of 10s and can’t play any other position. Luke Jones also paying price for Rebels late season fade out (as is Quade and few other Rebels).

Wallabies name 31-man squad for 2019 Rugby World Cup

“Both McIlroy and Spieth need the green jacket to join the five who have won all four majors in their careers – Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Player, Nicklaus and Woods.”

Not quite correct. Spieth already has a green jacket (2015) – he needs to win US PGA to complete the Grand Slam. Mickelson needs to win US Open to achieve same feat.

Winning this week will admit Rory to the exclusive club.

Tigermania grips Augusta

I like that team. Prefer the centres to swap around though.

But if Cheika is coaching a team with only 2 run on Waratahs and Hooper on bench, then O’Connor and Johnson really are the messiahs!

It is time the Wallabies moved on from the Pooper

Even when Eales was made captain there wasn’t universal support and he’s the first to admit it took him some time to grow into the role.

So on that basis maybe Rodda and Coleman are worth thinking about. Kerevi doesn’t seem terribly insightful in his post-match interviews but seems to do some good talking on field.

And I’ll throw this one in here. QC did a superb job of captaining a very understrength Reds against the British and Irish Lions in 2013.

It is time the Wallabies moved on from the Pooper

Well done Fionn on a well argued and rational article with plenty of evidential proof to back up your points.

Defending Quade is a thankless task on The Roar. But if he keeps playing in a smart and controlled manner with the occasional flash or brilliance such as he has done in the first month of Super Rugby then he is making the defence job a lot easier. But as you argue, if he wasn’t held to a different standard he wouldn’t need constant defending!

It is time to give Quade Cooper a fair go

Getting closer to the right team Mr Cheika.

Not sure how TPN keeps a spot in squad at all not least as starting hooker. Lineout throwing is even worse than his pre-northern hemisphere days (if that’s possible to believe) and the other younger hookers offer so much more around the field.

Hope the Gold Coast locals get out to game and create a decent atmosphere for what should be a good contest.

Wallabies bring back the big guns for Argentina showdown

Very strong arguments made here. Seems there a number of Jack Quigleys out there.

I know Tahs supporters will see this as NSW bashing but the game here in Australia is at a crossroads with the national supporter base and we need more frank analysis like this so we can get on the road to recovery.

Hope Cheika, Hooper, Grey and co all read this article.

Michael Cheika's time is running out

Anyone but Hooper.

Michael Cheika's new Wallabies need a new captain: Adam Coleman

Glad you picked up one of my gripes from the game in point 5. These soccer style dives are getting very boring and Sanchez is the chief perpetrator. It’s right up there with crowds booing the opposition kicker as my pet hates in rugby.

Five talking points from Wallabies vs Argentina

So now we’ve got three guys in there who can call lineouts. Feast or famine it seems. As long as we win 100% of our throws I don’t care how many callers they’ve got.

Happy with this team as Douglas has been underwhelming for a long time and plenty of others have deserved to be dropped before Simmons.

Mumm and Foley still the anointed ones. But seeing Douglas dropped may well have them nervous as he looked like he was one of MC’s pets as well.

I’m more optimistic about our chances now. Let the battle for 2nd place begin!!!

UPDATE: Timani and Robinson set for Wallabies debuts against Argentina

Agree about the very poor marketing. Heard a radio ad that went along the lines of “Watch Izzy makes the Springboks dizzy:”

Seriously … do the ARU have any idea of who their supporter base is by approving that kind of rubbish.

Four talking points from Wallabies vs Springboks

So Mumm is in to cure our lineout woes. Should be interesting. But does anyone think Mumm plays like a blindside flanker. He’s a second rower/lock. Sick of all these guys being picked out of position – Mumm, Pocock, Foley, DHP, Hodge and you could argue Kerevi is more a 12 than 13.

UPDATE: Wallabies team for Springboks Test: Cheika confirms bench

Terrific article Sebastian. Equal measure of common sense, retrospective wisdom and vision.

Couldn’t agree more about Foley’s kicking deficiencies. Was saying to a mate yesterday that I long for the Sunday paper photos of a Matt Burke, Chris Latham or Michael Lynagh showing their kicking follow-through leg up to their foreheads. Foley just stabs at the ball, both in place kicking and field kicking.

Popgun boot: Why Quade Cooper should be recalled for the Wallabies

Because they are all from the anointed land of Waratahs?

No Wallabies safe from axe: Cheika

I like Cheika as a coach. I’ve just never liked him as a selector. Sticks by too many guys who are out of form or not up to international standard.

Kepu, Moore, Douglas, Hooper, McCalman, Foley, Giteau (injured), Kurindriani, AAC, Mumm to make way this week.

Bring in Slipper, Ready, Arnold, McMahon and Higgingbotham to forward pack.

Bring in Quade, Kerevi, Hodge and Kellaway to backline.

Add Frisby, Godwin, Coleman, Carter, Hanson to bench/squad.

The Wrap: Bledisloe rout, does Cheika have any answers?
