Agree with that. Interestingly, John Ferguson did a piece (either on this site or another) a week or so ago analysing attacking break down clean outs and it came out that smith had the highest number of clean outs and wright was second. I can’t remember if it was compared against all super rugby pacific players or just Aus players but either way, pretty compelling stats.

'Brutal and violent': The two aspects Reds workhorse wants to fix to take next step towards Wallabies

To answer your line out calling question, Liam Wright calls the line outs for Qld

'Brutal and violent': The two aspects Reds workhorse wants to fix to take next step towards Wallabies

The ridiculousness of that claim is even more evident when you consider that Jordan Petaia, a Qld Reds player who is also apparently in Leagues crosshairs hasn’t been made an offer yet by RA..

Also, since when is it the Chairman’s job to handle player contracting?

Sooo…reckon Twiggy will consider it square if we send all the rebels players over to the force…?

Brilliant article! The Aragorn reference was the cherry on top, I’m still laughing.

Bollocks to the doom merchants - Super Rugby 2024 offers Australian rugby its most glorious opportunity

Watched the trial at Ballymore on Saturday, this guy is a real find. Seriously hot day and he played 80 minutes. Every time I looked he was in the thick of it, hitting rucks, making tackles, carrying and taking line outs. For such a big guy his footwork into contact (and space) is outstanding.
Great pick up by the Reds.

'A good one': Meet the first Irishman to play for the Reds in nearly 30 years - and how he won over Sydney club rugby

Totally agree with this Don, particularly the Ballymore comment. Other states have natural advantages that they can utilise or not, depending on their own competence. Should we detract from the Force as well for being backed financially by Twiggy? The Tahs/NSW have the highest number of registered players and the easiest access/connections to corporate decision makers for sponsorships, grants, media exposure etc. We should be saving our criticism for the organisations that don’t leverage these advantages…

Super Rugby clubs want a handout? That's a disgrace, the game is already broke

I can’t say I’ve read the article in the Australian that you’re referring to, so with that caveat being made – I suspect what you’re calling a “hand out” the states would call their proportion of revenue owed to them by RA for providing broadcast content and competing in the comp (Super rugby) that RA asks them to.

Don’t forget the Australian has taken a pro McLennan editorial position as well and will have no problems taking shots at the States..

Super Rugby clubs want a handout? That's a disgrace, the game is already broke

Yeah same here, and who better to round up the states than a guy whose been working with T2 nations for the last decade?

RA set to sign World Rugby's HP director - and he could help land Joe Schmidt as Wallabies coach

Is Peter Horne the Scotsman in this scenario? I think he’s Australian, could you be confusing him with the ex Scottish player and current assistant coach?

RA set to sign World Rugby's HP director - and he could help land Joe Schmidt as Wallabies coach

Agree Peterj, I was terrified they’d give it to some ex player with no formal experience. This looks like a very good appointment all round.

Exactly, perhaps they only wanted to answer “off the record” or answer on condition of not being quoted. A couple of the names have jobs elsewhere, needs to be some discretion applied.

'Open minded': Waugh backs foreign Wallabies coach - but with one non-negotiable

I take it to mean having several Australian assistants for culture and succession planning purposes.

I have to say, the more I hear from Bell the more I think he is a Wallabies captain in waiting.

Wallabies stars say Jones' Japanese defection would 'hurt', Bell open to captaincy as Aussie players return

Thanks Christy, really interesting read. Occurs to me that “weaponising” the 7’s program and using it as a carrot to retain/attract the outside back talent leaving school that we normally have to compete with league for is a good way to go (apologies if stating the obvious).

A real point of difference with opportunities to get paid to compete in global comps straight away including the Olympics etc. Upskills the players and keeps them in the system to potentially change over to 15’s when they are ready.

Bit rough there big fella!

Meet Australia's answer to Boks duo Kolbe and Kurt-Lee - and how they could change the way the little men are seen

Incidentally, I looked up on LinkedIn the two guys Christy mentioned are candidates for the high performance role in an earlier article this week – the Harlequins bloke he mentioned above and the World Rugby high performance guy. Two very impressive candidates on face value, particularly the World Rugby guy.

How McLennan departure could help Wallabies land ex-Ireland, All Blacks coach as Eddie's replacement

I agree they should go with the best person for the job regardless of nationality and to me the best credentialed, realistic option would be Schmidt – if Christy’s understanding is correct that he would consider it.

Having the director of high performance role sitting in above the coach should also hopefully help insulate the coach from some of the crazier goings on at RA.

Thanks for the article Christy, got to say it’s great to jump on the rugby page and not see Hamish’s mug shot looking back at me for the first time in a while!

Probably the worst thing RA could do if they want the QRU on board for other things…

The three contenders to take over the Wallabies if Eddie Jones walks

Love your passion mate but I just can’t understand any part of the Reds statement that is unreasonable? I thought it was a clear and constructive position to take given the wider headwinds effecting the game.
Do you think there shouldn’t be an open and independent review into the whole RA structure and leadership given what is going on/has just happened in France?
Do you think it doesn’t make sense for the QRU to have trust in the people they’d potentially be handing control of their high performance program over to? Is that really parochialism?
I thought the main point of centralisation is to have the uniform high performance standards across the states – the QRU have said they are fully supportive of that so what is the problem? The commercial aspect isn’t being insisted on by RA so what is the problem?
It’s all well and good to bring up mistakes from the past (which there are of course plenty) but the current QR administration have delivered operating profits in the last 4 years, now have a serious income producing asset in Ballymore and despite all the “search of the car park” jokes have run an open and transparent process in appointing a highly credentialed coach. It seems to me they’ve been getting it together in recent times. How did RA’s last coach appointment process go?

Not meaning to have a go at you here but I just think I’ve interpreted the press release very differently.

QRU’s centralisation poison - denial and delusion that fails the pub test

100% this. How could the states not be concerned about handing over the keys to this current RA administration? All this sudden talk about centralisation is absolutely to distract everyone and move the agenda on from the terrible decisions RA have taken in recent
times.

Yes, call me cynical but feels less like a ringing endorsement of RA and more like the Tahs basically going into administration

Exclusive: 'Seismic shift' as Waratahs to hand over keys to RA in boost to reform push - others to follow

I think the difference is that Folau regularly got pinged for not throwing straight, Faessler was throwing straight. Combined with Folau’s regular no arms tackles at the lower legs of opponents meant that a lot of fans got frustrated with him, particularly as they were mistakes he made regularly.

Revealed: The bloody ear that has proved a Rugby World Cup headache as Wallabies seek lineout fix

I think the statement that Faessler “lost 4 line outs” is pretty unfair. The first 2 throws were to the jumper (Hooper I think), Georgia just got a jumper up in front – definitely not the hookers fault. Third one looked like a miscommunication between caller, thrower and jumper, hard for us to know who was at fault, perhaps all? Also thought the 4th one was similar. If he’d come on and got 4 “not straight” calls then fair enough but I suspect the wallabies line out problems were more to do with Arnold coming off and no primary jumper being left on…
