It’s not Sophies choice, hopefully we can have both.

It’s like the finals debate where some people just want to focus on 1st past the post. Ok you can give 1st past the post a big trophy but why can’t we play finals as well 🙂

I used to watch a fair amount of league and personalities drive that game more than the quality of the football. Occasionally you do get a team that is great to watch like some of the sides the Warriors, Eels and Tigers have put together but most of the sides are very samey and solid rather than spectacular but with all the off field stuff going on it combines to form good drama.

You also get some great individulas like Preston Cambell and Matty Bowen who are great to watch no matter how dire their team is…. like Carle and Emmo at Sydney FC.

Football community united in frustrated boredom

I still find Perth frustrating, they always look on the verge of clicking but so far I have only seen one great performance (I forgot the opponent but Sterjovski was on fire).

I like watching Liam Miller but I feel they could do with a new coach…… not as badly as Sydney FC though.

The complete double standard is just too much for me.

Magilton has managed in the Championship where teams have serious budgets and the manager is under a lot of pressure. It’s a serious test of your credentials.

On the other hand Foz seems to really support just giving jobs to ex socceroos because they played at a high level….. well Magilton has actually managed at a high level.
We only have 10 professional teams we should get the best managers we can at the prices we can afford. They make a much bigger impact on the league than players do. Even leagues capable of producing quality coaches want some foreigners, I remember Seria A felt like it was stagnating when most of the coaches were Italians or the same old recycled foreigners rather than any fresh blood.

Idealy a new Australian manager either gets a job as youth coach or an assistant straight away at an A league club or they coach in the state leagues and actually achieve something. That is the proper path for coaches to take, if clubs don’t like what they see amongst the best coaches in the state league then don’t stop them getting a coach who has experience from a much tougher league.

Most coaches only become available because they failed at there last job or your getting them from some where lower on the pyramid…otherwise they wouldn’t be looking for a new job.

Does he have his licenses? Can he coach? What style does he want to play? Is he prepared to st ona plastic Bunnings chair?
Those are important questions.
What type of passport he has doesn’t answer any of the above.

With all this sterotyping seeming to go unchallenged in the football media you have to feel sorry for a budding talented Norweigen coach. Is he allowed to play anything other than long ball or would that just blow too many minds?

Judge Magilton on results, not his passport

hahahaha

I saw that on Twitter before Kasey, I laughed then and I laughed again now.

Judge Magilton on results, not his passport

Aren’t we a bit beyond just looking at a passport?

Value for money can emerge anywhere. There are good Portugese managers and there are bad ones.

Where football should import knowledge from

There are more games in a season for an A league coach so that should be considered too.

The more games you play the more chance you have of having a form slump go terminal and lose one game too many.

For the first few years there were roughly the same amount of games as the other leagues (21) but in the last couple of years it has been between 27 and 30.
And for some coaches there is also the ACL matches which seem to have been the undoing of Merrick.

Not an excuse but an issue is that an NRL or AFL job is the pinnacle for their coaches. I can’t see someone giving up an NRL job for an Origin job. Vidmar and to a lesser extent Van Egmond (1st stint) were still wanted by their clubs.

On the other hand there seems to be a lot more inter league poaching of coaches in the NRL and AFL. Do you consider Des hasler as sacked or not?
Does Wayne Bennet count as a coach leaving their job?
In Both cases the clubs would have wanted to keep them if not for other NRL clubs interfering.

A-League coaching careers cut short

I think he does ok in helping the team actually win games, he does a lot of spoiling.

But he truly is the poster boy of “foreigners no better than locals”. Sydney used an import spot on him for ages when he doesn’t seem much better than what you can find in any state league team.

Watching the game last night
Simon Hill: “Is this the moment for Sydney FC?”
“Terry Mcflynn”

And my mind instantly thought “obviously not” as soon as Simon mentioned Mcflynn’s name, and that was before he lost possession.

Are Sydney FC the most frustrating A-League team of all?

“At the end of the day, how many A-League players could play in the EPL? Ans is next to zero (or they would be over there), hence the standard isn’t going to be as good.”

Emmo was in the starting team at Blackburn when he decided to come home….so the answer is not zero.

Quality of finishing in A-League comparable to EPL

I think most people are pretty happy with just picking the winners.

Those exotic betts really cater for the hardcore which is probably a big slice of money but is also the easiest to manipulate. I really don’t think sports should bother even pretending to protect betting agencies from risk on those bets.

Outrageous surrender to betting agencies over AFL small talk

I’m glad it’s paid of but not many coaches would be willing to rely on an 18 year old Goal Keeper no matter how promising they are.

I think it shows a lot of guts from Arnold.

Graham Arnold is the new Postecoglou

I’m still shocked at how different Arnold is to what I expected, and I am someone that thought he would do alright in the A league.

I really expected pragmatism but he starts a bunch of teenager in crucial positions.

Graham Arnold is the new Postecoglou

I’m nt a huge Kossie fan but he seems a great fit for the role of caretaker manager for the rest of the season. I would be surprised if Adelaides results don’t improve and he’s cheap 🙂

He gave a lot of starts to young players at Sydney FC.

Kosmina in at Adelaide as Coolen is shown the door

I find the “they have to change their system” talk a bit irksome.

The system got them to where they are. If they played like headless chooks like most of the league then they probably wouldn’t make the top 6.

The individual players aren’t that great (Broich excepted) and outside of the team wouldn’t look that great. Man for man other sides look more impresive than Brisbane and the Mariners.
Adelaide, Sydney, Perth and Melbourne all have better individuals.
Neither Jurman or Danning were Sydney FC regulars and that team missed the finals last year, they already look better players at Brisbane.

They could do with a little top up in quality to make up for Mckay leaving but the side will get better if Issey and Danning can settle and find the net regularily or both Henrique and Broich stay injury free.

Brisbane Roar are in a slump not a crisis

Cheers for the link Axelv.

Hadn’t seen it before so very much appreciate it.

The future of football coverage is online

I’ve seen and been to a lot of sporting events as i’m always keen to try new things.

But when it comes down to it most of them strike me as not really gripping in the way the various football codes are in that you can watch them every week.
I loved Bathurst but I just don’t care about regular V8 races, enjoyed going to the Australian open but would never watch full match of tennis on TV…… yet I can watch 30 rounds plus of A league which wouldn’t be in the top 10 football leagues in the world.
If I was Canadian I could imagine myself liking Ice Hockey as it has many similar ellements (fast paced, tribal and over within a couple of hours). But while enjoying myself at at the Sydney olympics I never asked myself why these sports are only popular for two weeks every four years. Doesn’t feel like a conspiracy theory to me….. javelin just isn’t something I want to watch every week.

What I've learnt in 15 years loving two sports

Let’s be honest.

I can enjoy the odd bit of Motor Racing and the Olympics but personally find most non Football sports are complete rubbish.

While not an AFL fan if that was the only football code left I would watch that over basketball, baseball, cycling, swimming and other supposedly great global sports.

Cricket gets it’s own TAB on the Roar so it seems some people are into diversity….. good for them.

What I've learnt in 15 years loving two sports

“Whilst Hound security guards are happy to turn a blind eye to more harmless activities such as beer snakes, player baiting and streaking they come down hard on the real atrocities of beer knocking over, sombrero wearing and status updating.”

🙂

Imagining the perfect sporting stadium

I would agree there’s more atmosphere at a football match. I still like watching both but it means if it’s a bit out of the way I’d rather watch the league on TV (it’s a great TV game).

Though I also fall into the category of more of a football fan that just supports one league team (Parra) and otherwise only enjoys big matches like Origins, finals, 1st vs 2nd…. roncos vs Canberra last year when Brisbane were a chance of missing the finals.

What I've learnt in 15 years loving two sports

So football fans are accused of having a chip on the shoulder by people who are defending the indefensible (A police force turning into us vs them) as an excuse to have a go at football.
Some might call that gross hypocrisy.

Idiotic Tweets copped the backlash they deserved

If it happened in the cricket then that’s not an excuse…just shows how stupid they are.

The tone was that they wanted to evict people and that’s not appropriate no matter what sport. The police are creating and us against them feeling when they should be above all that.

When tweetng evictions or arrests it should be done as a warning to others not a boast.

Idiotic Tweets copped the backlash they deserved

Personally I would prefer the Roar got grouped with the cup winner who only narrowly avoided relegation and is suffering financial troubles that force them to sell heir best players to Guangzhou and co before the ACL starts.

Any Asian imports should be key role players

He’s only been at Melbourne one and a half years.
He was drafted as well so it’s not likely he had a life long love of the Demons.

That said who waits until the end of the season, go of contract (big risk there) just to re sign with his existing club. You would be daft to think he won’t be at GWS next season.

Tom Scully: does he stay local or go to GWS?

I don’t really see there being many bargain buys in Asia for HAL clubs though unless you sign discards. Even Indonesian clubs put a prohibitive fee on their players when Sydney asked around.

We haven’t even enforced the plus 1 rule in regular competition like they have in Korea, China and Japan. So not only do our clubs have less money the actual Asian import spot is less important to them.

Any Asian imports should be key role players

It’s the pinnacle of AFL because a good Origin performance can catapult you to being one of the highest paid players in AFL 🙂

Why so little respect for Meninga and Malthouse?

What’s the saying?

“Opinions are like Eddie McGuire’s, everyone’s got one”.

Pretty sure that’s it.
