Every rusted-on Titans fan knows where our major deficiencies have been: (a) Poor football IQ at the very top of the list, particularly when finishing sets. (b) Terrible edge defence on both sides of the field. (c) Second and third quarters as our bench depth has been poor. (d) Small and lightweight backline (and bench).

Des should help (a) and although White is still in charge Des should also help (b). Fermor and Palasia will help (c) the kids all have another season of experience which will give Des a bit more to work with. (d) Is still a worry. The other question marks seem to be over whether Foz, Boyd and Liu are up to it and if Verrills can stay fit.

In defence of the Titans: Why Des Hasler can be the man to finally bring tackling to the Gold Coast

Good article … the defence issue is interesting because White seems to have the creds but it wasn’t evident in 2023. I doubt Campbell will play in the half’s and AJ is starting to look like he’s made of crystal. Another challenge will be getting some footy IQ into Boyd and Lofi who often play really dumb. Weaver with a few more kg’s on him now will seriously push for the 7. Des has his work cut out for him but as you wrote the team can score points, it just needs to work out how to defend for longer periods of time.

Pressure Points: If anyone can overcome the Gold Coast curse, Des Hasler is that man

Add Boyd, Weaver, Kelly, Sami, Fotuaika, Ryan Foran, Jojo and Dave Fifita to that list and you have 1/2 the entire squad being local juniors plus the six development players so in total 21 of 36 … not too bad.

The Titans list should be up-dated. Tremain Spry has been released and his spot taken by Jacob Alick.

The rate at which players mature is so variable that there is no “norm”. Who knows where Nanai ends up, or whether Fifita for that matter continues his development after a rocky 2022. Clubs face a difficult conundrum when faced with big contract offers from rivals, as do the players who are well within their rights to grab the best deal they can irrespective of the side-effects. The only ones who have a clear choice are the players’ managers: 10% of a million is unarguably better than 10% of the 400k prodigies are really worth.

The David Fifita trap: Why Jeremiah Nanai needs to use the last great Queensland prodigy as a cautionary tale

Gosh, you lot are likes wolves in sheeps’ clothing.

Probably the most amazing thing is that a tv series commentary is featured on a sporting site but then again why not? On topic, Ted Lasso is harmless entertainment and hardly worthy of any deep analysis other than giving it a thumbs-up or not. Predictable but fanciful plot, mediocre acting, occasional surprises and quite a bit of fun places it on the filler list. The fact that they use the innocuous West Ham as the “villain” just makes it even more absurd. Will definitely finish Season 3 though.

It's unrealistic to think Ted Lasso is realistic as critics go overboard about season three being too nice

I 100% agree with the sentiments of the headline but not the authors view. I would just like to celebrate rugby league every weekend. If we have to turn the sport into a community platform then how about we stop all the self-congratulatory groups, whoever they may be, and stay focused on real issues like the Mark Hughes initiative. I see all sorts, shades and genders walking the streets every day so why celebrate them … if we have to then I want an “every day person” day.

If you celebrate everything, you're celebrating nothing: NRL must show us respect and shut up about Respect Round

Bennett and his Stupid League provided the first chinks in the demise of Broncos leadership. Once corporate became more important that the camaraderie that rugby league clubs are built on then it was only a matter of time. The influences of the likes of Cyril Connell and Paul Bunn shouldn’t be overlooked either. As an old West Panther I don’t have much love for the Dolphins either.

Why Walters should walk: Support among Broncos players clearly dwindling

(1) since when is Suva, the capital of Fiji and where our PM and PNG’s watched Origin, now in PNG? Poor journalism. (2) PNG has the corporate money plus the NRL’s normal handouts to operate an NRL squad but neither the talent pool nor pathways to underpin the system. (3) PNG has a high quality, syndicated broadcasting system and could easily add top class training facilities to their pretty good National Stadium but the development systems as mentioned are terminally flawed by inherent cultural challenges. PNG in the NRL? Not in twenty lifetimes. WA for the 18th and daylight second.

Is PNG right answer to NRL's 18th team question or just wishful thinking for league-obsessed nation?

The FIFA World Cup is like the Melbourne Cup to most, a ‘once every now and then’ phenomena. Experts crawling out of from under wherever they hide in between those infrequent but iconic events and I am one of them. So far I have been amazed by (a) how did we qualify (again)? (b) why aren’t we producing more than just a few fringe level players? Good luck to the team and I hope they win the whole thing but in my 67 years of watching so many great performers from so many diverse sports, isn’t it amazing that apart from perhaps Warren, Johnson, Kewell, Schwarzer, Bosnich and Cahill (apologies to those other icons I have missed) we just don’t seem to be able to produce the talent to seriously challenge at this level. Leading with my chin, I know.

After an all-time Socceroos win, do we dare dream of the knock-out stage?

Obviously not a Dragons fan but hope the kid recovers completely. I posted because I thought it was so refreshing to see Cody’s mother’s comments about his coach. I think coaches are often painted in the wrong light. They have to make tough decisions which won’t please everybody but after all they are people managers and the insight into Griffin’s humanity deserves recognition.

I take umbrage at comparing the revenues in Australian sport with those of the US, it’s apples against grapes. Economy of scale alone suggests that we will always be the poorer cousins. Good article Joe, aced it for mine. I do hope every player can get their just desserts and that the game can continue to prosper from the top down.

If NRL players want more money they need to stop sulking and start strutting

Greatest test of all time? Hardly, but after the mismatches dished out recently was a good contest. Tino and Martin have no case to answer but the Invisible Man Mitchell needs to take a good look at the replay even though he’s the commentary darling. Plus JAC and his antics are wearing very thin. Bring on the next one!

Yes Voss is intolerable … fortunately I’ve been able to watch the BBC broadcasts which are streets ahead in quality although often difficult with their accents. Fox should take heed.

It’s the off-season and the RLWC is on at the wrong time of day so why not roll out the old chestnuts. Recruitment anomalies and poor decisions are a part and parcel of every club but in the Titans case the travesty in their recruitment puzzle was the gross mishandling of their pathways … until recently. Locking-up the key development schools of Keebra and PBC plus the addition of a host of others together with an attentive attitude to their catchment areas has seen one of the most fertile rugby league regions finally have real pathways to the NRL squad. Of course this means that players will leak from that system due to a lack of availability but now the Titans have the system to better manage their talent pool. One question in the midst of all that positivity is the effectiveness of splitting the NRL squad across two QCup clubs. There is probably a fair argument for having a single Titans reserve grade.

The ones who got away: Gold Coast Titans

Bennett got his swag out of Stupid League so that’s pretty lame but he’s right in that it ain’t gonna happen. PVL will stick to his guns while Abdo and Newton will eventually agree to something that will shock us all with the number of snouts in the trough and life will return to ref bashing. Our game is as ridiculously predictable as ‘seagulls fighting over a chip’ is just plain ridiculous.

Bennett says rebel league won't happen while V'landys bites back at clubs as NRL's funding feud with players gets even uglier

The only thing worse than the slow ruck and the rest ridiculous numbering was Vossy’s commentary which was full of irrelevant trivia and detracted from the game itself, no matter how much the rest of the team tried to keep him on song. Soft track bully Meninga will get exposed against tougher opponents because this is not a dominant forward pack.

Foxx Force Five: Addo-Carr runs amok as Kangaroos crush Cedars to reach semis in 'worst performance' of Cup

I hate the cotton-picking (can I still say that) numbering system but in an effort to be “modern” like ‘what has rugby league ever done for me’ Meninga why don’t we just do away with numbers all together? I suggest each jersey has a different colored X on it (front and back). Then all the deeply offended woke community won’t have to pick on the poor old Sea-Eagles and their anti-rainbow warriors.

'It's his jersey now': Mal speaks on Cleary call, with Panthers connection vital to decision

The team pretty much selected itself, I just wish I could work out who’s who with the ridiculous numbering. Wighton and JAC just demonstrate why Freddy’s eclectic nature is a one trick pony.
