I’ll premise my comment by stating that I am an eagles supporter,
All the arguments as to why eagles will lose surround the idea that Collingwood midfield will be too good for the eagles. What some people like to completely ignore is the fact that only three weeks ago we beat that same midfield! You can speak to home ground advantage all you like but the fact is, when the game was on the line in the last quarter, the eagles mids beat the pies around the contest, they were tougher, and they were better, and it had nothing to do with the shape of the oval that they were on! I’m not saying eagles will win, I think this one is a toss of a coin, but to say that Collingwood will win simply because their midfield is better, is an insult to the eagles midfield, you don’t get to second on the ladder with a bad midfield, a bit of respect wouldn’t hurt!
A second point is surrounding the argument that the eagles don’t have a matchup for degoey. Once again, even after losing a man in the opening quarter, I don’t recall degoey dominating at all, so once again, an ignorant argument, Cole, or any other of eagles backmen, can do the job. People also seem to forget that up the other end, Collingwood have no matchup for *arguably* the best forward in the game when fit, Goldsack played on Kennedy last time, but it wasn’t his terrific defence that kept Kennedy down, he was just rusty. This point is only proved by the fact that he had six scoring shots in the second half alone. If you ask me, if degoey and Kennedy both get off the chain, it’s pretty obvious that Kennedy is the more damaging player, capable of kicking 3 or 4 goals in a single quarter. And finally, the argument around how the Collingwood small ball brigade will outweigh the scoring power of Kennedy and darling. Once again, these pundits seem to turn a blind eye to Rioli, ryan, Cripps, Le Cras and Venables! I won’t for one second say that the eagles smalls are better than the Collingwood ones, but what I will say is even if Kennedy and darling are stopped, that doesn’t mean for one second that you will be able to stop the eagles smalls as well. As for the big American, if you watch the game against Richmond, the tigers defenders payed him very little respect, allowing him to run around on his own or with a defender half his size. The eagles won’t allow that, and, yet again, may I add that we have already stopped him and rendered him completely useless only a few weeks ago. I will round out my argument by addressing the classic Collingwood fall back, that “we’re a better team than we were three weeks ago, and we’re a much better team than the last time you guys played us at the G”, I hate to inform you, but the eagles have only gotten better as well, clearly proven by our dominant performance against the fairytale Melbourne team. It’s clear from my argument and from Collingwood supporter arguments, that you can easily twist stats, matchups and history, to suit whichever side you’re backing, and the truth is no one really knows what’s going to happen, this game is as close to a coin toss as you can get, so to say one team is going to dominate another is probably a brash and uninformed opinion, but hey, stranger things have happened. Best of luck to both teams, and go eagles!!!
