Pretty sure they are way ahead of Brisbane’s facilities … I could be wrong but don’t think I am.

It's not always sunny on the Gold Coast

Only hard game to tip this round and I am still finding it difficult.

Hawthorn vs Sydney: Friday Night Forecast

Perhaps … against some teams, maybe. Not all teams fear the ‘G though.

Reframing the AFL premiership market

The longer any team remains in the finals, the better their chances of winning the flag are. I guarantee you anyone not still playing all have the same chance – 0%.

Reframing the AFL premiership market

Favouritism still doesn’t put points on the scoreboard. It doesn’t win any games. Ultimately, being favourite means absolutely jack squat.

Add Bews (22) and Ruggles (24) to that list if you want to be accurate for tonight’s game (which makes the average age 27.5), or add Kolodashnij (20) who plays most games and Thurlow (22) who would be playing 20+ games had he not done an ACL if you want to include all the defenders who will factor in throughout the year. The rejuvenation of our backline is well under way.
Lonergan looks the closest to retirement to me. Enright may very well retire this year, but if he wants to and his form continues its stellar form so far this year he is very welcome to keep playing.

Adelaide vs Geelong: Friday night forecast

Cats to hold Adelaide under 80 points while scoring over 100 themselves.

In the eight on the back of beating Essendon, Freo and Carlton … doesn’t exactly say much.

The entire AFL are flat-track bullies, not just the Eagles

Yeah their 3 wins were against Essendon, Freo and Carlton …

The entire AFL are flat-track bullies, not just the Eagles

I just don’t see Hawthorn able to flip the switch as well as it could have in seasons past. They still don’t have anyone I’d trust for the Brian Lake role. Roughhead will come back and make them better (though no pre-season and missing half the H&A season does make it hard for players to get fully match fit and find form). I still think the loss of Hale is bigger than the stats say, he always seemed to bob up at the right times, be it link up or in front of goal.

Flicking the switch: Hawthorn’s uneven start to 2016

Not recently the Swans haven’t.

R22 2013 – Geelong 92 v Swans 48
R23 2012 – Geelong 112 v Swans 78

Geelong's smash-mouth stylings paying dividends, for now

Cats give away the most frees in the league as it is. It won’t be a high scoring game.

2016 AFL season: Round 8 preview

Yes it will be different … for both teams. Selwood was very underdone (all of one VFL practice match for the whole pre-season), Motlop was still about 9 kg overweight, Menzel didn’t play, Dangerfield, Smith, Henderson were playing their first real games in Geelong hoops, McCarthy was playing had missed almost 2 years with navicular injuries, Ruggles wasn’t yet playing so yeah lots of things will be different on Geelongs side too.

I think what people overlooked, as far as what Dangerfields impact at Geelong could be, is Paddy’s leg speed. Paddy’s ability to not only get a clearance but to then run and carry it until he finds space is something Geelong hasn’t had since Ablett. Selwood gets clearances but generally need someone to offload it to and Caddy would rather run through an opponent than around them.

Zac Smith’s first year was good, many people seem to forget that. Traditionally big men also tend to take 2 years to come good after ACL repair. People also forget Zac Smith didn’t come from a footy background, he only started playing Aussie rules at age 16, when he decided to join Gold Coast as a 17 year old Queensland Zone selection, he had played less than 20 games at any level. Add in the fact that big ruckman generally bloom at a later age, gives me hope that the best is still to come. Let me just add if he kept doing what he has done so far I’ll be rapt but I think he’ll get better yet.

That is part, and only part of, what makes up home ground advantage. Knowing the ground (knowing how it plays, its dimensions, quirks etc) is part of it too. Being in front of your home fans is another part.

The entire AFL are flat-track bullies, not just the Eagles

The AFL forces Geelong to play ‘home’ games in Melbourne. For years we only got 7 game in Geelong, only very recently have we been allowed 8, we’re still fighting to get a 9th, let alone the 11 home games every other club, including interstate, in the competition gets.
The Hawthorn and Essendon games can easily be Hawthorns and Essendons home games. Heck the country game would make more sense being played at a regional ground like Geelong anyway.
As for government funding, you are kidding yourself right? The two Perth teams have contributed jack squat to their new stadium being built. None of the MCG tenant clubs have ever paid a dime towards the MCG renovations. Swans didn’t pay for the recent SCG upgrades. Cats though have spent close to $20million over the past 7 years toward Kardinia park. Every time a permit is needed, every architectural plan drawn up, every lobbiest hired to try to get state and/or federal money is all paid exclusively by the Cats. If the Cats hadn’t digged in their own pockets to drum up the support and create the plans and file the permits, the only thing that would have happened is the stadium would have fallen down around them by now.

The entire AFL are flat-track bullies, not just the Eagles

It most certainly is a disadvantage to have to play your home game at the oppositions home ground. Can you imagine if the Swans had to play ‘home’ against the Giants at Spotless or Brisbane had to go Metricon to play a ‘home’ game against the Suns?
Geelong has been in debt for roughly the past 50 years. Part of the reason is because they lose millions every year being forced to play ‘home’ games in Melbourne (last year the club lost approximately $1.7million because of the 3 Melbourne ‘home’ games).

The entire AFL are flat-track bullies, not just the Eagles

Don’t need to go to the MCG, make more money with less seats at Kardinia. We are forced to go to the MCG and Etihad so the AFL can meet its minimum games contracts at those venues.

The entire AFL are flat-track bullies, not just the Eagles

As we can glean from the table, Geelong definitely have the upper hand, playing a total of seven games at home, giving them a massive advantage over the rest of the competition.

Delve a little deeper than just home or away and you’ll notice that Geelong had to play ‘home’ at Hawthorn’s home ground. That pretty much destroys any semblance of a home ground advantage for that game. In round 12 Geelong once again is forced to play a ‘home’ game at Etihad stadium against an Etihad tenant, North Melbourne. Again no advantage, in fact a home disadvantage.
So the reality is:

Geelong 1 (played) 4 (to come) 5 (total)

Shaping up to be one of its worst coaches ever.

Bucks has simple advice for his players: "Harden up"

Hodge went off the ground at 30:07 of the 4th quarter. The score was 104-86 at that point with just 3:12 remaining. Cats were already dominating prior to Hodge’s injury. It made no difference. Cats kicked 5 of the last 6 goals.

What’s that got to do with anything? Had absolutely no impact on the result.

I’d argue he should be doing it every year, I’d say the same about every single coach in the game though. Can’t keep running out the same 22-25 players every year, have to give kids a chance (after they’ve earned it), have to expose them to games here and there.

Winning not the priority for Dockers
