Good article.
Re the NZ reaction to the final; There has been some criticism of Barnes but mostly its been about the VR’s constant intervention and huge influence on the result.
Fair enough, but I must remind my fellow Kiwi’s that a VR in 2007 would have detected and disallowed the French try that cost us that quarterfinal. We’ve never really got over that and yet here in 2023 we rail against a VR for decisions he got right.
Strange bird, the kiwi.

Eight crucial lessons Wallabies must learn from the RWC quarter-finalists

Yes, good comment.
The ABs were good, very good. But the Boks were awful in the first half. They missed virtually every high ball, and they dropped simple passes. Couldn’t get the ball, couldnt hold the ball. I can’t imagine another 40 minutes as bad from them this year.

The Wrap: All Blacks and Wallabies show off all of Test rugby’s perfection and imperfections

Kia ora ano Geoff,
(my previous comment was just to learn the posting system here).
My thoughts arising from your article;
Yes, I too find the International game is what brings me back.
How hugely different cultures express themselves, each unique, within a common set of rules fascinates me (Test cricket, likewise or even more so).
Which brings me to Super Pacific Rugby; it’s not super because one side of the ditch is so uncompetitive. And crucially SA is missing.
We must embrace professionalism truly, introduce a draft, spread the talent and revenue evenly and ensure 5 competitive Oz/NZ matches every autumn weekend. Now that would bring me back.
While I’m here a word about Moana Pasifika and Fiji in SRP.
Fiji is working and will continue to work because they represent an actual entity; the nation and culture of Fiji.
Moana Pacifika is failing because it is an artificial construct created by marketing men. The MP concept could be likened to giving Ireland, Netherlands and Zimbabwe a combined cricket team to play Test matches in the belief that this would make one international competitive team and bring the viewers flooding in. Yeah.. na.
The individual Pacific Nations are each unique cultures, ferociously competitive and singular. MP rugby won’t work.
Super rugby needs to grow some kajunas and pick a winner Samoa or Tonga and back it fully. If games in the islands are difficult then play them at Mt Smart – the expat community of either country will be there in full every weekend and the team will flourish.
Trust you are well mate – hope to see you back here sometime (NZR needs a functional brain)

Gday Parksy,
Trust you are well.
The Eels are missing having the Rats to beat.

Agreed, the Havili experiment needs to be put to bed quickly.
Remember Macdonald going to centre, then (even dumber) Cullen shoe horned in to center. Didn’t work then won’t work now.
How can International level coaches not know just how different centre is from any other position? A good wing; Tana Umanga, Ma’a Nonu can be moved in and make the change but full backs? Yeah, nah
