The idea that Penrith dont know what Wests Tigers have offered Luai isnt worth formalising a process. This 2 week rule just adds more unneccessary media innuendo. Its made even worse with it being in the off season. Theres no rugby league played so all the journalists are focussed on Luai.

The alternative is to move it forward 6 months to 1st May. It works well in football with bosman transfers. Fans also understand that if a player hasnt signed a contract by that stage then they are already on the way out, which takes alot of the drama out for the player.

The other positive is that players will see the season out, sort of like Wighton did with Canberra. There’s none of the, “He’s signed for 2025, how about a release for 2024?” That does fans heads in.

Clubs, players and managers will always do things well before the deadline. Thats inevitable and fine. Still, no other sport in the world has a deadline that far ahead.

10 days of Christmas: The NRL’s new transfer rules will be pushed to the limit by Luai’s Tigers move

It’s a silly rule. The problem is still that clubs can sign a player 16 months before they can play a game. This is one of those awful committee decisions and a legacy of the difficult RLPA and NRL talks.

The now former Chairman Lee Hagipantelis has delusions that are bigger than that god awful Brydens logo.

That he attempted to argue the loss of Pascoe as an “experienced CEO” when we’ve got Shane Richardson, shows everything he knows about running a successful Rugby League team.

I don’t think he’s a terrible person, but he was a terrible chair of Wests Tigers. He proved that when in the role and he will prove that now he’s been sacked.

'It's about time', 'best news in a decade', 'thank god': Legends' glee at Tigertown carnage as Wests sack board

All my birthdays have come at once! Fair play to the directors at Holman Barnes Group that have stood down after the review. They have been out of their depth, but turkeys very rarely vote for Christmas. They have done the right thing.

It’s great that Shane Richardson has come in as CEO. We really needed to get someone in that role who actually understands the game both on and off the pitch.

If I have one slight downer, it’s that Danny Stapleton is still there and they seem to be keeping a Balmain and Magpies representative. It’s still looking backwards after moving so far forward.

I’d prefer if Balmain just became a fully meeged part of Holman Barnes. That group nominate 2 representatives. Invite Wests Campbelltown to have a person on the board. Just unite. All that wealth and junior areas. We can look forward to never being a laughing stock again.

However, I’m being too greedy. Today is a great day!!

If the key players stay fit, I think they will be the team to beat next year.

There’s a lot of development still in most of the 30 and they should be as hungry as hell after that Grand Final.

Looking forward to seeing more of Blake Mozer

Pressure Points: Reece and Reynolds were near-perfect last year – but backing it up might be the hardest part

I’m also offering the entire sport of football (soccer).

I genuinely think Canberra could end up anywhere from 5th to 16th. They are going to need some of the youngsters though to have breakout seasons in some of the spine positions to get close to the 8.

I think Morgan Smithies will hit the ground running in the NRL. Also a big fan of Ata Moriota.

Pressure Points: If Ricky picked up his first wooden spoon, would his position at the Raiders be at risk?

I don’t think he will play NRL. I think he’s there for the newly established NSWRL Roosters side.

I’m not sure the NRL will ever clear him to play first grade. I think Tim Simona came back at reserve grade level and that was his ceiling of eligibility before moving to France.

Really enjoyed that article.

I think the thing about Nick Politis that is so impressive is how quietly effective he is at the Roosters. He is the complete opposite to McLennan.

He pretty much gets everything he wants, but he is no Veruca Salt. He just finds his target and gets them on his side. No grandiose statements. No media tactics. No “should would coulda”. He just gets it done.

Imagine if City Ford had sponsored the Bears back in the 70s….

I’ve heard Joseph is getting paid even more than 4.8mil over three years. Something like 1.6 in 2025, 1.8 in 2026 and 1.95 in 2027!

I will still only believe it when I see a press conference. I thought it was just Nick Politis getting RA to give him more money than planned. Happy to be wrong. I often am 😂

Good luck to him

BTW how long has Wayne Pearce been on the Commission now? He must be close to 12 years or more!! Russell Balding must be really jealous.

If Kiwis and Poms are allowed to play, Origin might be about to stumble into eligibility rules that work

There’s a few Kiwi players in that list like Mulitalo, Leota and Taumalolo that don’t qualify for State of Origin because they moved after 13. Taumalolo seems to have been listed as moving to QLD at 13 or 14 but still gets dragged into the debate. Even if they changed the Tier 1 rules they still won’t qualify. I think Foran definitely moved before 13 but he’s always been fully into the Kiwis. He’d look even weirder than Luke Keary did in a Blues shirt.

Removing the tier 1 restrictions on NZ and England and having it that you need to live in the state before 13 seems like a good deal of common sense.

I still think though that there needs to be a removal of flip flopping countries. If you are picked for one country for a full international then you can’t play for another country for 3 or 4 years.

There will be a few individuals that will lose out but international rugby league needs better. Like many fans I can represent 3 countries and not many people are mono-cultural. However, the current flip flop rules dont exist in any top level sporting competition and make us a bit of a laughing stock. We can’t keep preaching tribalism at club level but then not sure what country player x is turning out for a few weeks vefore a match.

That would be the correct choice. The Kiwis have a great team and depth for the next few years. There’s already an affinity with Bennett there with the 2008 win. There also isn’t an obvious Kiwi Head Coach out there at the minute.

Plus, the Bennett and Meninga rivalry will hopefully bring back a little more love and attention to international rugby league.

'Embarrassing post': Tigers star in strife over social media comment on LGBTQ+ inclusion

You’ve hit the nail on the head.

There’s a weird culture among a fair few England rugby fans that will never accept an English and northern “rugby league” presence in the team. They can just about tolerate a defensive coach. Owen Farrell hasn’t played Rugby League for nearly 20 years, but because he grew up on it and who is dad is, there’s always been this perception that he isn’t one of them. A kiwi like Dylan Hartley is fine though. Hartley did plenty worse things on the pitch than Farrell, but that was OK because he grew up on rugby.

Owen Farrell has played for the same club and his country for over 10 years now. I’ve never heard him in trouble off the pitch. I dont think hes got rid of any coaching staff. He plays hard, but I don’t think he’s eye gouged, stamped on anyone’s head, or done a Darcy Swain in a ruck. His shoulder tackling isn’t the best, but then he’s not the only one there.

Its true he’s playing in a sport now where you get a red card for tackles that were a penalty when his career started. He plays the game hard and makes a lot of mistakes with his tackling technique. He plays the game to the limit as that is his job. It stands out more probably because he is the fly half. There’s plenty of other rugby players that do a lot worse.

'Warning was there': Owen Farrell makes surprising decision after 'appalling' 'absurd' treatment

Nice article. Like you say, any effort and support has to be put in now even if the benefits don’t come out for a number of years.

A wallaby supporting friend of mine told me that there was an assumption in the 90s amongst fans that the rugby loving Pacific communities in Western Sydney would become a goldmine for the Wallabies.

Even though that dream looks out of reach, there still needs to be a legitimate and long term plan to grow the game there.

How the west was lost again: Rugby's battler club suffers another blow and this one could be fatal

Enjoyable article. There’s a lot of good ideas with a lot of optimistic/hopeful candidates.

I think the bad outcomes for Wallabies head coaches in the last 10 years, as well as the current instability in Rugby Australia, will rule out a few potential head coaches, especially the non-Australian options.

That said, you only need one head coach. I have a feeling it will be either Jake White or Larkham.

RA must not fixate on an Aussie coach - why Ronan O'Gara is best choice to lead Wallabies after the Eddie calamity

There’s almost no way Andy Farrell will work with RFU again. He’ll always be a Leaguie from Wigan to parts of the rugby fanbase in England. He learnt that lesson in 2015. Every other rugby country is fine.

He might do a Shaun Edwards (who has always deliberately stayed away) and just make up convuluted reasons why he isn’t currently working for the RFU for the rest of his coaching career.

It’s as if Rugby Australia decided to try and play “Brewsters Millions” in 2023.

In terms of the French match payment, there seems to be something missing. This issue with the handshake deal was reported a few days prior to the match. However, what terms did Australia and France actually agree on prior to kick-off?

Surely they would have agreed on something in writing then? If RA didn’t sort anything at that point, then Phil Waugh is looking like he got stung.
