they get rolled for sub 200 on pitches that offer something for the bowlers which is why I said teams have to change their approach if the situation demands so. You cannot look to score 350 on a pitch where 240 is a winning total.

What does the India vs England white-ball series portend for ODI cricket?

Yes but given the depth in their batting they should have scored a bit more. I have no problem with this approach if it what the situation demands. Take the wc finals for example. When you have such lengthy tournaments the wickets will tend to slow down a bit as the tournament progresses. They did fumble in that final and it took a ridiculous clause for them to win the coveted trophy. I just wish teams play according to the situation. India, i think, have one of the best bowling attacks so the method of consolidating and scoring 330/340 works for them more often than not coz they have the bowlers who will defend it say 7 out of 10 times. They did that twice in this series. They have the firepower to post 380+ on flat decks but the top order is now a worry for them. Dhawan isnt getting any younger and in modern day cricket you would expect one of your openers to score a century in say 70 balls and not 90 or 100 balls. I hope they realise this and get in shaw, gill or mayank agrawal and give them a long rope.

Think it was New zealand who set the narrative first. You saw bmac go berserk opening the batting for new zealand in the 2015 wc. If i remember correctly New zealand toured england just after the world cup and there were high scoring games in that series which England won eventually. The problem with this approach though, is that it makes u a one trick pony. If u look at teams like India Australia and New zealand they have a mixture of aggressive and conservative batsmen. England imploded in the 1st odi after failing to read the game situation and lost a game that they should have won comfortably. Also, add some spice to the wicket and England will collapse. The CT 2017 semi finals is a fine example where they lost to Pakistan. Imo there is no perfect approach. Every team will have a template depending upon their strengths and weaknesses and that template will win you games/series and also might result in a loss. The question is, do u change your approach after one failure ? India followed their template you say but still ended up scoring less than their 2nd odi total. I would have agreed had they reached 375 or 400.

As somebody else mentioned, you have had much stronger teams come to India and lose in a similar manner so i wouldnt be too worried if i were an England supporter. Bear in mind, India were no good with the bat either. You take out Rohit sharma’s 160 in the 2nd test and the remaining 10 batsmen failed miserably. The likes of pujara rahane and kohli all failed. They were reeling at 140/6 in the last test and then the brilliant hundred from Pant. Home conditions are an advantage and you saw sam curran do something similar against India in the 2018 tour. Dan Lawrence looks promising and so does Pope. Bairstow is a real concern. Dont think he is a number 3. Might be tempted to give Pope or lawrence a longer rope at number 3 and play bairstow in the lower middle order. Stick with foakes, fantastic keeper and handled spin better than the rest. Leach was decent as a spinner while bess was rubbish. Id stick with leach and im sure he will improve with time. England should win the series against new zealand and India later this year if they play their best team. The rotation policy is a joke. You cant rotate players for marquee series. Granted these are difficult times but if they rotate their best players for the ashes (and by then im hoping things will be normal again) then i think it should be crystal clear that ECB has stopped caring about test cricket.

Where do England stand after the Indian Test series?

Kinda reminiscent of the 2014 India tour of england where India managed to win at Lords and then just self imploded in the last 3 tests. Going into the 2nd test India were under the pump coz a loss there would have meant goodbye to the wtc final spot. Complete dominance in those last 3 tests and a lot to ponder upon for the English side. Also, I still believe this Indian batting lineup is quite fragile. Just need to check when was the last time a pujara or a kohli scored a 100? Yes they have scored runs every now and then but they are more known for their ability to convert their starts into big 100s. Kohli, in particular, has been below par for a while now. Pujara, scored runs in Australia but never really converted his 50s into 100s. That, imo, is a worrying sign. I like Rahane but for all the talent he possesses, he is highly inconsistent. Scores a ton in a tough situation and then does nothing for the next 15 20 games. The depth is excellent but that is simply not enough you see. I dont see them dropping pujara or kohli or rahane which means going into the wtc finals, these 3 would still be short of runs.

An English lesson on how not to play a Test series in India

Arnab, bhuvaneshwar kumar has to be on that plane to England. He was super impressive in the 2014 series. A great swing bowler and a decent bat down the order.

Can England spin to victory over imperious India?

Think its a close tie between chennai and motera (best batting wickets)

Can England spin to victory over imperious India?

Interesting read. I think you are spot on about Bumrah. He is a special bowler and his workload has to be managed. They dont really need him to win them games in India. Use him wisely. Like u mentioned, play him in the day night game and rest him again. Quite sure he will play the white ball games that will follow the tests and then the wtc finals (if India win the series 3-1 or 2-0) and that will be followed by 5 tests against England in England. Quite a hectic schedule and it makes sense to rest him. The likes of ishant sharma, thakur and siraj can do the job. I am guessing bhuvaneshwar kumar might get a look in for the 3rd and 4th test. Who knows, both umesh yadav and mohd shami might be fit for the last 2 tests too.

Remove Pujara from the 2018 tour and you will see the difference. As fans, we tend to over react coz we get swayed by emotions. Plenty of Indian fans were distraught when Australia won the first game in Pune in 2017. Remember India getting bowled out for 100 odd in both the innings? My point is, its imperative that you believe in your team. It is a game of cricket and one team has to win and other has to lose. India were brilliant and they deserved to win but that doesnt mean this Australian team is below average. They are still a pretty good side and I believe they will come back with a bang. India, are at another level atm. Their bench strength is super solid and its a shame many of the 11 who played at the gabba wont feature in the tests against England. If they manage to win their away tour against England this year, i think we can all accept that they are indeed the number 1 test team.

Not only is the sky not falling, this Australian Test team is really good!

Wasnt this pretty much the same side that beat Pakistan and New zealand quite convincingly? It is amazing what one series loss does to you. All 4 games were competitive (adelaide was competitive up until that one session where India imploded) and this last game has gone right down to the wire. Remember the Indian batting lineup is only missing kohli. Even in their last tour it was Pujara who scored all those runs and not Kohli. India’s bowling has been fantastic. I remember telling this to my friend that fielding 4 fresh bowlers might just work in India’ favor and it did and how. Thakur was swinging it with the old ball too geez.
