ENGLAND 5/271
Pietersen 106, Bairstow 22
Another maiden from Watson. I doubt he’d admit this, but his bowling is miles better than his batting in the long form of the game.

Hahah. That permanent scowl.
At least he’s bowling well.

Pietersen 106, Bairstow 18
Pietersen swings wildly outside the off stump. Watson is plugging away earnestly here. Good battle, this.

Pietersen 104, Bairstow 18
Lyon extracted some turn and bounce there.

My thoughts exactly. The bowlers will kill for a rest after this stint in the middle.

ENGLAND 5/255
Pietersen 100, Bairstow 12
Bairstow, still not looking convincing, chips in the air just over the fielder. They take two runs. He then sweeps for four.
Nathan Lyon ‘boasts’ figures of 21-5-67-0… without actually bowling that terribly.

ENGLAND 5/249
Pietersen 100, Bairstow 6
Pietersen swings and misses at a full & wide ball from Starc.

ENGLAND 5/248
Pietersen 100, Bairstow 5
Bairstow is struggling to get his eye in. A loud appeal for LBW is turned down, presumably going down leg-side.

ENGLAND 5/245
Pietersen 100, Bairstow 2
KP has a ton – his first hundred at Old Trafford. He brought it up by cutting Starc over the gully region for four. Beautiful stroke!
Pietersen stands on his own with 23 test centuries, second only to one A. Cook.
Nathan Lyon back into the attack….

ENGLAND 5/239
Pietersen 95, Bairstow 2
Pietersen clips Harris through the on-side for another boundary. This has been a controlled yet entertaining dig from ‘KP’, now one big hit away from triple figures.

Current or past will do. Mark Waugh deserves a mention!

ENGLAND 5/232
Pietersen 89, Bairstow 1
The previously errant Starc returns to the attack. Pietersen comes OH-SO-CLOSE to dragging the ball onto the stumps.

I’ve heard worse ideas, SIlver. Worth a try in the last half hour, I think.

ENGLAND 5/229
Pietersen 87, Bairstow 0
Pietersen edges through the slips – deliberately this time – for another boundary, before mistiming a pull next ball.
The Aussies will be trying to get/keep Bairstow on strike and have a crack a crack at him with this still-new ball…

Would have to agree with that. Bell’s timing is immaculate. It takes something special to remove him.
I feel the same way watching Tendulkar – the best technique I’ve seen.
Who else would you rate amongst the easiest-on-the-eye batsmen?

ENGLAND 5/225
Pietersen 83
Bell is GONE! OUT for 60! Finally some joy for the Aussies. Harris cleaned bowled him, hitting the top of off stump.
Out walks Johnny Bairstow…

Pietersen 79, Bell 60
Ian Bell drives Harris for another boundary. He is absolutely at the top of his game.
This is turning into a hugely frustrating day for the Aussies. What’s your solution??
Siddle to continue…

One run from the first over post-tea.

ENGLAND 4/211
Pietersen 78, Bell 51
So that is TEA – the second session most definitely England’s, who batted superbly to add 92 runs for no loss. Australia’s bowling ranged from poor to uninspiring and a little unlucky.
Australia need to regenerate in the sheds and come out firing – they need early wickets if they’re to stay in the match, and indeed the series. 11 wickets in almost three days of cricket show how hard the task is.

ENGLAND 5/271
Pietersen 106, Bairstow 22
Mitchell Starc is back into the attack and beats Johnny Bairstow with an absolute beauty. A maiden it is.
The scoring has slowed here, which is all well and good, but Australia – with one eye on the weather – desperately need a wicket or five.
