Oh Look! Another niffy sitting on their couch criticising other people having a go at making things better…

Super Rugby can be fixed. Here's how

Great article! Comprehensive. I recon McReight and Debreczeni should be in the team. Tom Wright should be dropped to go an think about his arrogance, poor decision making and terrible passing game (won’t happen).

'I couldn't sleep': Wallabies predicted squad for TRC as Eddie sweats on Kerevi, bolter for 7 jersey emerges

The comparison with Rennie is inaccurate as Larkham is forced to rest players, and is resting them against a strong team, where a loss will hurt less, as opposed to losing to the sucky Tahs, which would be a bad miss for the Brums. Rennie rested players against a weak team for… well… nobody knows why really. This isn’t a mistake Bernie wants to make.

SRP Round 5 teams: Rebels lose key men, Tate benched, Brumbies rest FIVE Wallabies, Waratahs suffer injury crisis

Looking forward to it mate! 👍

Players, laws and officials are killing rugby: people now care less than ever before

Yes, you are right… I misspoke… more people playing those games than Rugby, but Rugby is still #7 on the most watched sport in Australia

Players, laws and officials are killing rugby: people now care less than ever before

Mmmm.. not sure about these comments mate. Yeah, 3 Aussie teams won, but only 1 game was against NZ opposition, the others agains Fiji and and Aussie team. And yes, Rugby may be growing globally, but it’s shrinking locally. Volleyball and Badminton have way more fans than rugby in Aust. Most of my mates laugh at me when I ask them if they want to watch some Rugby.

All that said, the timing of this article could have been better… it’s a pretty fair start for the Aussie teams this year, plenty of excitement around Aussie rugby in a world cup year with a new coach on board – so yeah, while I agree with most of this article – I’d also like to see more positivity right now.

I was hoping to see Donaldson start against Italy given he should have a good combo with Gordon from the Tahs. That would have made some sense to me. Otherwise, yeah, give Donaldson a go with white as he will bring quality an assurance to support Dono. But FFS, DON’T bring Dono on with only 5 mins to go with a kick required to win the fr*cken game!

ANALYSIS: Time to pray Australia, because it's Quade Cooper or bust for the RWC. And when he's gone there's no one else

A really good article somewhat ruined with (I believe) unjustified deriding of Quade… Seems you’ve forgotten how he save our proverbial a*ses last year? That said, great article, and Noah did awesome and I do hope this was the making of him at international level.

Really interesting on the tackle technique… hopefully if, as you say, they identified tackle height at half time, and were able to fix it, we can adjust as needed in future.

I’m interested in everyone’s thoughts on the last 3 minutes .. we really crumbled… exhaustion? foot off the gas? lucky it didn’t happen earlier? that was a real worry for me.

Did the Wallabies play champagne or cask-wine rugby?

Agreed. As stupid as putting your head in harms way is, I recall playing with plenty of blokes who’d duck into a tackle if it meant there was a chance the opposition went down a player.

I’d suggest it would be as calculating as aiming to make it happen in the latter part of the first half, in case the ‘fall guy’ ended up failing a concussion test, so as to limit the impact to the bench. I can even see coaches ensuring a backup player sits on said bench to cover this exact scenario. Extreme? Definitely. Plausible? Yeah man – this is a world cup we are talking about.

Great article mate, keep em coming.

World Rugby’s high tackle framework will lead to ducking

Brave article mate. I agree that Izzy could have been dealt with better by RA, but any sympathy I had for the guy is gone now that he is asking for $3mill to cover legal bills I can’t see amounting to more than $200 or $300k max. You mention that thousands of Aussies are on your side, but that leaves millions against him – and now with a very bitter and sour taste in their mouths about religion (like we need more reasons). It is a pity as I think he could have brought a better light to religion and its power of inclusivity and goodness. He now appears to be fighting for his right to be hateful and earn crazy sums of money. I really find it difficult to align this apparently pious person with owning a lambo.

Like I said, brave article, and bravo for writing it mate. I’ve tried hard to view this from the other side, without the vitriolic spin many put on it.

Why I donated to Israel Folau - and why I will again

Outstanding article Geoff!

On a slightly serious note – I’ve heard that RA is in danger of going broke in the process of defending itself in court from a selfish bigot. True story? Should we be starting a go fund me page to stop our beloved sport going broke?

Nahh, let’s trust in the judicial system to identify the difference between ‘religious freedom’ and ‘freedom from responsibility’ and save our $$ for the sick kids who really need it…

The Wrap: Folau initiative sparks plethora of new ‘Go Fund Me’ pages

Perhaps a deliberate omission as that would actually be a worthy cause?

I entirely agree with the comments on Hore and Gibson. When you have CEO’s coming out making motherhood statements, holding nobody accountable for their performance (or lack thereof), your organisation is in trouble – no matter the industry. The CEO needs to be a clear minded leader, firm with their direction, fair and consistent with holding staff to account, and tough with their decisions when necessity demands.

Hore seems to be doing none of the above, and as a result, Gibson either hasn’t been made to pull up his socks, or isn’t capable of pulling them up, and his lack of capability hasn’t identified and the required tough call made.

In turn, you have blokes like Izzy out in the cold (I don’t agree with his sentiments, but do believe rugby could have supported him and given him a channel to further his cause in a more constructive way – AND kept him in rugby and out of the media ffs), and Hoops and Phipps making uncalled for comments adding fuel to the fire.

Yeah Spiro – where indeed is the leadership?

The Waratahs' leaders, not Israel Folau, have led to this disastrous season

I don’t get this argument @sheek. That you can’t say something religious? It seems a spurious argument (or perhaps it spiroious?), and below my learned religious friends.

I’m pretty confident nobody is going to be offended if you say Allehuja, or Gob Bless for example. I think we all know when we are saying something hateful.

The Waratahs' leaders, not Israel Folau, have led to this disastrous season

@Waxhead @Big Dave . It does detract from an argument when you state the year the Tahs won the comp as an appalling year. However, I agree with Waxies sentiment.

The Tahs haven’t been great to watch for a long time. IMO, having the major teams (Wallabies and Waratahs seem to have been the same team of late) doing so badly in one or Rugby’s heartlands, is bad for the game.

Well said Whitty

Future of Australia’s three best five-eighths up in the air

Got me!

I may still happen… c’mon Quade

Scott Johnson picks Quade Cooper as his preferred Wallabies playmaker

Yes, true Fionn, but the Sunwolves don’t put bums on seats. Joe is right. People who ‘only kinda maybe if it’s a big match’ watch rugby, like league mad NouveauCheataueans, either haven’t heard of the sunwolves, or only see them as a second string side not worthy of their time. (not my opinion of them – I also love them) You want to create a following in a new city, bring a big name team and bring your best game and players.

I have mates who live up there and went to the game. They just felt dudded.

Hey Waratahs, welcome to NSW (you probably won't be back, hey?)

Great artcile Nicholas. I started reading it a bit defensively… some of those offloads could have worked if executed correctly after all. But as you took us further and further through the litany of lost opportunities, it started to become pretty clear. We need to know when the time is right for an offload, and when it is risky, the rewards aren’t there and we need to hold onto that pill.

It appears there is a mandate for the Rebels to ‘offload at every opportunity’, which in itself is a risk. There is a reason nobody but Sonny Bill could offload effectively for years… it’s bloody hard to do. You have split second to make a decision, generally under a lot of mental and physical pressure. Having the ability to largely rule the offload in or out before you even receive the ball would help no end in reducing these errors.

Amazing analysis mate – thanks for sharing this.

Why even Rebels have to follow the rules

There should be a ‘love’ icon for this comment alone…

How Rugby Australia failed the Sunwolves

Hay Fionn,

Well researched (or pulled up from an impeccable memory), and I like the idea of swapping hooper and pocock for easier / harder matches.

Question – how do they handle captaincy in that case? I don’t love the idea of the captain often not starting games (whether that Pocock or Hooper, and I believe you prefer Poccok?) Perhaps look at Super captains and establish who is a lock to start for the Wallabies?

Hooper, discussed. Even though I love the man, it’s hard to back him as (C) for the wallabies anymore.
DHP – has he proven himself? He has proven he isn’t a winger, so would having him FB and Izzy wing be our best solution?
Lealiifano. Boy it would be a great cinderella story. He has some work to do to prove he is the #1 #10, let alone best captain.
Kerevi? On current form it’s hard not to pick the bloke, but how’s his captaincy going? It is hard to judge with his current team, but if he can mould the reds into a consistently competitive team this year it will speak volumes about his captaincy.

Back to your article – you are preaching to the converted here. Can you scroll through you rolodex and fire this over the Chek? Or (way) better still, Snoz?! 🙂

It is time the Wallabies moved on from the Pooper

You are on the money Glen. And both bring interesting games of rugby (in very different ways) to our screens in Australia at times that are far more attractive than games in South Africa. If they continue their trajectory, they are going to be forces to be reckoned with in the near future. Great stuff.

That said, the expansion of super rugby had diluted interest, the conferences are confusing and the travel and timezones are painful. I would also argue that the rugby championship means very little to anyone these days. While I like the idea of change to make our game healthier and future proof, Nuisances comments hold wisdom I hope world rugby takes to heart. Give the people a game for the people, not one where few benefit to the detriment of others.

Eat your heart out Lenin

Is Agustin Pichot the man to save rugby globally?

Agreed – with limited thinking outside the box (such as assuming Beale is in the top 23 for the Tahs, let alone the Wallabies), and griping about AAC, who along with Hunt has formed the best centre combo we’ve seen at the Tahs for a while, this article is flawed.

That said, I recon Beale could have real impact in the last 20 minutes of games. It may also resultin Newsome getting some quality time on the wing – a position we seem to see as the dumping ground for good players we can’t fit anywhere else. Finishing is a critical skill for a winger – and hardly anyone has it.

Where will the Wallaby selectors play Folau and Beale?

I am intrigued by the Reds… On paper they look like htey will struggle, but what is the “Thorne” factor going to be?

And apologies – the Tahs DO play!

Was the Waratahs loss an ominous insight into the year ahead?

Good first article mate. As a suggestion, perhaps some additional detail if you keep doing it? Players to watch? Ins & Outs?

I can’t really disagree with any of your predictions, although I recon the biggest call is the Bulls getting over the Jaguares at home. Going to be tough.

I do hope that the Bumbies upset you applecart, but I thought the Brumbies still have a ways to go to really hit their straps last week.

Why no prediction on the Tahs and Rebels? Oh yeah – half the aussie teams have a bye this week. Sheesh.
