I reckon Ewen McKenzie is the nest Australian coach of the last 20 years and suffered a terrible ending. He seemed like a very pragmatic and innovator operator with the way he changed team tactics depending on who he was playing. A loss for Australian rugby.

Ange Postecoglu seems like much the same kind of character. He also fell out with the local game administrators and quit as national coach. After more success with Yokohama and Celtic, he is now doing great things with Spurs in the EPL. Its also a shame he has been lost to Australian football.

'Be Australian': How the RWC QF classics showed we must urgently define and deliver our own style

If you look at the replay which is showing in the small window to the left, Kolbe clearly seems to have left the line early. It looks like Ramos shift his balance but had not moved forward in his kicking motion.

'Heartbroken': Springboks knock France out of RWC in dramatic, controversial QF as 'key moment' highlighted

Suspicious as in both the cases that I recall (DV, PSDT from memory) went off without any TV replays of incidents that might have caused head injury, either from their own team or opposing team.

They returned 10-15 mins later. Was a neutral doctor involved?

But on the basis of what? If a player comes off the field rubbing his jaw, they will never send him back on and tell him to run it off. The liability issues would be enormous. So if you are saying there is a formal assessment protocol I would love to learn more. I have the suspicion (unproven, granted) that it is quite easy for a player to hoodwink match officials if they wanted to.

The use of tactical HIAs by SA was very suspicious.

Agree. Cheika works for Argentina because they are a passionate team and this mirrors his personality. Chieka is heart over head.

But the Wallabies need a complete reset. At this RWC we saw no attacking structure, dumb penalties, basic mistakes, poor defence. Far from the days the Wallabies were thought of as a smart team, we are now a dumb team.

Rennie was (and is) the best coach for that rebuild and he was getting results. It is the disease of modern society that everyone wants the quick fix. But now is the time to look into the abyss and understand there are no quick fixes, no miracle results. Just hard work, time and patience. We fans need to understand that as well.

Seems like Angus G is out of favour. I would have thought Karl Dickson was worse than him.

But generally seems about right.

They did it in 1995 against Lomu, albeit with some help from Suzie.

Well put James, and you’ve identified an important factor. After the French (naturally), the Irish seem to have really significant travelling support in the games I’ve seen. That surely must a positive for them.

I agree. To my eyes, Kellaway is in the mold of Hansen or Keenan.

Interesting. I recently read Bernard Cornwell’s Waterloo, where the edge in discipline was with Wellington’s forces (with the exception of the Scots Greys who took their initially successful charge too far, arrived at the main batterie with their horses blown, and were almost destroyed in a counter by the Polish lancers).
Even then it was near run thing and without Blucher’s arrival late in the day, the French had probably done enough.
But I digress. A champion team versus a team of champions. It will be fascinating to watch over the next two weekends. Whichever sides does emerge from that half of the draw will start the final as the odds on favourite, unless they get beaten up too much in the process.

Andy Farrell must be the best coach in the game right now. The precision of the Irish game both with and without the ball is amazing. The speed of passing close to the line , and their attacking pod structures, are things of beauty. Sexton is not the creator that Finn Russell is, but he is a supreme game manager. I presume that the development pathways and administration play a large role in the team results we have seen in the last 5 years.

I think France is the other standout side. I don’t think they have the team precision of the Irish, but they probably have the edge in individually talented players, even without Ntamack. They also rebuilt in the last few years but the methods are not as clear to me.

SA’s power game is almost irresistible and they have some wonderful talented players, but power is in the their DNA and if their pack is held to some kind of parity, the game managers are not quite as good. But it will always take something special to beat them.

NZ has always been a power and they have wonderful players but their pack does not have the quality of the others. A lack of dominant front props (hookers are good), an old lock pairing, and an unbalanced back row will tell. They are good enough to beat most sides most days, but I can’t seem them beating the top 3, despite cricket scores against minnows.

For the Australian game, a review has to look at what these teams have done. I think more is to be learnt from IRE and FRA as they have climbed their way to the top in the last 10 years whereas SA and NZ have always been world powers.

Eddie’s reality distortion field is strong.

Exclusive: Eddie set for midfield switch as Wallabies sweat on miracle World Cup finish and CEO pops in

“It’s just hard to digest how quickly the game got away from us and then obviously just the reality hitting that we could be headed home.”

How is it hard to digest? Porecki the captain gives away the dumbest penalty in the first 30 seconds, and Hooper gives away a similarly stupid penalty at a lost ruck a few minutes later. I really cannot fathom the kind of mental preparation that must have gone on in the sheds before this game.

Prior to the RWD I (wrongly) gave Eddie the benefit of the doubt for his ability to get teams to perform, but I am convinced that the problems with Wallabies are equally lack of skills poor mindset. It’s hard to understand with all those resources.

Yes, selections are a part of the problem but they way they gave up and went into their shells in the second half, with no attacking shape, was frankly appalling and a resounding coaching failure. yes some tried hard but the lack of belief oozed from all of them. This plus the lack of structure as much as anything that tells me that maybe Eddie doesn’t have more to give, and he should move on.

The SMH would not publish without a credible source and proof. If it really did not happen, then Jones has a libel case.

SPIRO ZAVOS: My message to Hamish McLennan and Eddie Jones: 'In the name of God, go'

I think it is not really a lack of height that was the problem. I don’t even think that throwing was a problem as Faessler was very good in SR. I suspect it was more the lineout calling. I thought I saw Tom Hooper doing it after Arnold went off, and he probably hasn’t done it for the Brumbies. So yes experience is a factor.

Revealed: The bloody ear that has proved a Rugby World Cup headache as Wallabies seek lineout fix

You may well be right Dusty. They don’t have the x factor players, but their team cohesion and short passing game is so very, very good.

And this is just my bias, but I’m tired of SA and NZ winning. If we can’t win it (and I don’t think we can), then I want FR or IR to win it.

Five things we learned: 'F--king do your job' - Moment Skelton proved Eddie right, Wallabies' rivals put on show

Ireland barely needed to get out of 2nd gear so too early to count them out. I’d wait until they play SA on the 24th. NZ will still finish 2nd in the group where they will meet SA in the QF and I expect a repeat of the Twickers result. The NZ pack is not as good as SA or FRA or IRE.

Five things we learned: 'F--king do your job' - Moment Skelton proved Eddie right, Wallabies' rivals put on show

Surely the game plan vs Fiji is to keep it tight, “up the guts”, and limit the chances for their backs to carve us up out wide. Fiji’s strength is in the backs more than the forwards, so maybe a 6-2 bench is needed to keep the pressure for the full game? A tighter game plan might also mean White gets the nod over Fines LW.

Points will still be important so I can see Donno retaining his place but agree that Kells is a better option at 23.

Five things we learned: 'F--king do your job' - Moment Skelton proved Eddie right, Wallabies' rivals put on show

At this stage, Eddie’s mind spanner has worked with Will, Suli, Pone, and now Donno. Defined as “best ever’ performances from each player. That is a good achievement. More to be done. Carter is patchy. But improvement retains its upward trajectory, but more work is needed: the lineout broke when Arnold went off; Kerevi is not looking sharp; White cannot implement the new game plan. Also good: a low penalty count.

It’s a real mystery that they persist with the selection of Christie. Roigard just looks so classy.

Weakest links, not superstars, often decide World Cups: So where are the fatal flaws in the top 10 contenders?

The pressure of hosting must be immense, but the crowd can really be as good as an extra player sometimes. As a nation, France seem to have mastered pressure quite well in football (soccer) where they have a very good record at the Euros and WCs in the last 10-12 years. I hope they can draw on that.

If the Wallabies can’t win it (and I don’t expect them to win, as the top 4 teams are all far superior), is that we see a new champion in either France or Ireland.
