The biggest difference was the pokies at the time, QLD government still had not allowed them into clubs, not until the fall of the great Joh Bjelke Petersen and Labor got into power they introduced the pokies. But under Joh QLD was booming ahead economically, especially in the regions. Since the fall of Joh the QLD regions have suffered while Labor Brisbane centralized policies have Brisbane sucking the regions dry. In the early 80’s living in Regional Queensland the weekend BRL footy was televised through ABC. We all knew of Wally from Diehards and Wynnum manly, Meninga playing for Souths Magpies etc.. and watching them perform in Origin, I knew the NSW comp existed, but knew nothing of it.
Most of the “best” QLD sides only have 2 players north of Gladstone which now holds a million in population. Billy from Innisfail, & Gordie from Townsville. The current side playing tonight is approximately 50 – 50 north and south of that border. You will find this stat has been playing a significant role in the QLD sides in the last 20 years.
