Agree. Our fast bowling cartel are nearly all at all-rounder status, if just falling short, but three ‘nearly all-rounders’ makes at least 1.5 all-rounders.
Strengthen the bowling by playing 5 full on full-time bowlers, lower the chances of burnout for all of them by bowling each less each test but also get the best out of all available options. Don’t weaken the bowling by adding Marsh who doesn’t really surpass the others in consistent batting figures. Labu’s bowling, while handy, doesn’t really make him an all-rounder in my view.
If they really feel like they need an all-rounder in the team – which i am not entirely convinced of, why not go in with this team – Its a pretty handy ‘tail’:
Warner
Khawaja
Smith
Head
Wade
Paine
Pattinson
Cummins
Starc
Siddle
Lyon

That’s the same team i would go with, with the exception of Labu – I’d go with Wade. Wade’s funny ole medium pacers might even be handy seeing what we are seeing. We can scrap a fifth bowler out of the team if and when required. If Khawaja isn’t fit then either Labu or Burns at first drop and Harris to open.

Pattinson should be a lay down misere for the first test. Starc, Cummins, Pattinson, Lyon is a formidable bowling attack and a bloody good tail. Lock it in.
It’s gonna be a cracker of a series.

Lets not forget that our friend the English weather is quite likely to have a significant impact on the make up of the final four. Some of those ‘likely’ victories may well be shared pointers. Benefiting the team that was ‘likely’ to lose and potentially screwing the other team.

That’s kind of my point though. IF the selectors feel they need an all-rounder to take some load off the bowlers, why not play a stronger bowling unit of full on full-time bowlers who it turns out can all bat a fair bit. IF they feel they need an all-rounder, i think this is a WAY stronger bowling line up than adding Marsh and doesn’t lose much, if anything, in the batting. I am not saying put Pattinson in as the all-rounder, I just think that when combined with Cummins and Starc (and even Siddle), the three make a pretty strong ‘tail’ (1.5 all-rounders?) and a bloody strong bowling line up.
