How can one in lock down in Central Europe access the Test, please?

Why 'The Test' is a must-watch

Thank you Mark, in these days of confusion it was good to read a very anchored article. Thank you! I’m not likely to be a visitor at the SCG even on a bit of grass on the Hill but I watch each match as produced in word commentary and my aged spirit rises in Europe.

Is being a member of the SCG worth the money?

I think the great potential of pink ball day/night cricket will lie is its current and future of on field extreme temperatures. Joe Root was hospitalized with heat stress last England tour and this may become a common occurrence. It’s also good for families after school/after work if even only to see some greats making scores to inspire a younger generation.

Day-night matches are reviving Australian Test cricket

My team would be:
Joe Burns
Marcus Harris/Dave Warner (if he scores consistent runs over the next two SS matches)
Marnus Labuchagne
Steve Smith
Alex Carey/Kurtis Pattenson
Will Pucovski
Tim Paine
Pat Cummins
Josh Hazelwood
Nathan Lyon
Jhye Richardson

Marsh injury could bring Stoinis into Test frame

Thanks Zenn, I agree for the greater part but would give young Will a slot at five and Davy at six, I think your bowling group would be fine, there a lot of hunger from the under bowled group.

Fixing Australia's XI for the fifth Ashes Test

IAP, I think your comment must be the most ill-informed of all the current banter. Tim Paine’s principal job is to Captain the Australian Team, on field and off field, give those short order TV interviews, work on team structure and logistics and suggest to the selectors his opinion on team make up. His second task is as wicket keeper and he is one of the world’s best. He needs to rely on top order batsman to get runs while his mind is clogging everything else. I think he is shaping up to be one of Australia’s greatest captains.
Learn the Game and play it body, heart and spirit like the best do then you might appreciate greatness.

T-Paine worth more than just runs to the baggy greens

The comments were an interesting read – thank you Roarers, also an insightful article, thank you Ronan.
Now the Derbyshire game is past tense and perhaps Steve Smith is back in the nets without his neck guard and feeling less claustrophobic he can bat his heart out. In an ideal world perhaps the Aussie team could have split and played a cameo match of limited overs for a delighted crowd.
In real time an afternoon off. Afterthoughts on the group game heading into the next Test: Usman Khawaja should open, I’d opt for Cameron Bancroft as his partner due to his tenacity, Travis Head at 3, Steve Smith in his comfort zone 4, Marnus Labuschange following, then Tim Paine and David Warner – yes I’d do that! Bowlers: Peter Siddle a lock, Josh Hazelwood, Nathan Lyon and Mitch Starc. If we can cream the next test then give Michael Neser an airing and others who have put a foot forward. But let’s have the Ashes on the way home first.

Khawaja and Harris post 50s in Ashes shoot-out

Thank you Dan, a witty and intelligent wrap of the First Match spiced with priceless humour! Looking forward to the next post match report.

The Liebke Ratings: First Ashes Test

Hello Barmy Farmer, you can’t have a plan for Steve Smith – he hasn’t either each ball is pure intuition and put where he thinks it should be. So be it!

Australia bulldoze England in first Ashes Test

Great work Roar Think Tank! I have three objections: 1 I’d open with Bancroft and Harris, Khawjia at first drop, Smith, Head and Marnus. 2. Give Warner a break before he breaks. 3. Bowlers, watch the Weather Report, Cummins, Siddle, Neser and Lyon are still my picks. The wicket might be bone dry today but after three days of rain it might be sticky cover and all.

Revealed: The Roar's Australian XI for the first Ashes Test

Hello Paul,
Some great insight there but my preference in the first match would be opening with Khawaja and Bancroft, Warner first drop then Smith at four. That makes a battle between Harris and Head at five, Paine six and my mysterious bowlers to follow. Unconventional but I think it might work given the field.

Four options to be Australia's future first drop

From a grey nomad Test Cricket is the best and as a format cannot be curtailed to fit younger generation’s short memory span. For some summer time is about cricket. For me switching in 1970’s ABC channels to hear live broadcasts by McGilveray & Haslett commentary off set by live broadcasts from the House of Representatives. Both informative and entertaining.
Now living in a foreign country I read the cricket commentaries but occasionally arriving at a UK train station during a Test match I still ask the score. Test cricket is for generations not just TV.

A proposal to save Test cricket

I think Healy is facing husband Mitch Stac every opportunity

Ellyse Perry brings up another superb century

I’d play Burns & Khawaja as openers, Smith at 3, Harris 4, Head 5, Warner 6 . . . Paine 7, Cummins 8.
J. Richardson/Siddle 9, Starc 10, Lyon 11. Twelfth person Labuschagne. My problem is fitness issues with Khawaja and Jhye so my ideal first Test might not get off the ground.

Picking the Ashes squad is more straightforward than you think

Thank you very much Dan. Although I spent yesterday switching between four commentaries during the match your observations are champagne. I look forward to your next debriefing.

The Liebke Ratings: England vs Australia

Thank you Ronan for a clear critique of our upsurge in confidence against spin. I believe the batters are facing a significant number of spin balls in the nets also. I look forward to other comments.

How Australia turned from prey to predator against spin

Sorry 13th Man, we must get Khawaja back opening with Finch, Smith at first drop, Warner at 4, Maxwell 5, S/M Marsh 6 (I don’t come from WA), Carey, Cummins, Starc, Zampa, Lyon. Maxwell has shown his skill with the ball and with added overs from Smith and Finch we should be firing. Wish them all the best!

Australia survive scare to defeat Sri Lanka and go top of Cricket World Cup table

Yes James, I’m sure he can run drinks even just once.

Australia's baffling batting ensures failure in record run chase against India

For all the hype please let us open with Finch & Uzzie. There’s been too much speculation on Davy’s current injury seemly forgetting his recent poor performances, give him a day off to run drinks. Please!

What will Australia’s opening duo be at the Cricket World Cup?

I’m afraid I disagree – Aaron Finch as a great Oz ODI captain stays exactly where he is, leading his team who support him fully.
Usman Khawaja opening in partnership has been set down in concrete these past months – I think only a fool would dispute that.
Shaun Marsh at 3 – I’d consider iffy and prefer Steve Smith thus dropping S. Marsh to 4.
Glen Maxwell definitely at 4 but could be moved up the order as required.
Alex Carey at 6 – steady looking player and getting better.
Stonis at best 7 (with regret)
Pat Cummins at 8 where he has shown in the past he can seal an innings
Mitch Starc at 9,
Zampa at 10
and Lyon the GOAT at 11.

Dave Warner can run drinks.

My Aussie XI to take on Afghanistan in the World Cup opener, plus predictions

Very similar to mine although I had Aston Turner in (at 6) rather than Shaun Marsh. My logic was based on the current team’s performance and those who could perform dual roles ie bowlers who could bat or batters who could bowl and all round fielding strengths.
I wish them luck!

Revealed: Australia's Cricket World Cup squad (as chosen by The Roar)

Hello LK – perhaps the players have been hit on the head ten times more than they can endure with brain cells intact. A bit like bull riders who go out with a bag of marbles . . . no marbles left then a rodeo bull rider

Some sporting facts for you to unquestioningly accept

I am not sure that I actually chuckled at all the above comments – the article was about women playing cricket at the top level. A bit different from my first game at Nundle (NSW) Public School in 1956 when the Big Boys sent me and my book of poetry down to the willow tree by the creek with instructions to say only which way the ball went. Occasionally I was given last bat with some of the kinder big boys to guide my hands. I played cricket with my children in our back yard in Canberra as they grew up. But the best thing I have achieved sports wise was help set up a cricket club at the China University of Geosciences, we had a Pakistani Captain, an Indian (female) umpire, two Bangladeshi players, a Sri Lankan batter, me (Australian) and a bunch of Chinese girls one of whom was our wicket keeper. Girls can play cricket and the women’s team deserve all the credit they have, and then some. So please, remember their names.

What's in a name?

Let’s think about the old guys like me – played school cricket every Friday afternoon as sport at Nundle Public School – me down by the willow tree with my book and all I was ever asked by the Big Boys was which way the ball went. Ten years later I was a radio addict for Sheffield Shield scores on the long trek from central NSW towards my dreaded six weeks of salt, sand, sunburn at the coast and after being sun struck a few times out on the dingy I gratefully retired to the tent and Allan McGillveray and Lindsay Hasslet who needed no names on tops or numbers in order to provide the greatest summers of my youth and to whom I am forever grateful. I’ve been a cricket fan ever since. But think also of the some fans without sight who cannot see shirts, numbers or names on players, are we giving the commentators a holiday in not describing the game in the depth and nuance that I enjoyed once upon a time.

Take a number, and shove it

Thank you Simon. As a former journalist I was appalled by the trial of the Australian media who in my view should have accepted the ICC punishment as sufficient. The media splurge headed by box commentators were the real source of the news condemnation of the three players. Some former captains should have been more restrained in their comments and far more supporting of the Australian Team as a whole. The Australian Cricket Team has moved on, although the Barmy Army may not have. We have a duty to support all players of our national game in the spirit of ‘play the game’, one that does not harass anyone’s family, personal attributes or personal qualities. We already have a new beginning, its time to stop raking old coals.

What effect did the media have on the ball-tampering scandal?
