England 37-21 Wallabies: Eddie Jones has last laugh over Michael Cheika
Two points:
1) It was a good game for the Wallabies not only because they won, but they won despite making some fairly basic errors – knockons, lineout losses. These basic errors should be easy enough to iron out in the next 5 days – confidence gained from a win can also mitigate repeating these errors. One area that might not be resolved in 5 days is a #9 [Phipps] forgetting how to pass and a #10 [Foley] who struggled with ‘go forward’ ball. I believe Foley’s is a confidence thing having been relieved of kicking duties.
2) The ABs had a shocker and I would be very, very, very wary of them this weekend. Their performance on Saturday was a blip and they are pretty good at re-grouping when their dominance is challenged. The basic errors the Wallabies made were the sorts the ABs normally capitalise off.
If Australia really want to win the Bledisloe they have to be sure to pack their new ‘at all costs’ & ‘full 86mins’ attitude and iron out those basic errors, and hope to goodness the ABs haven’t managed to regroup to their usual standard.
