The Blues kicked themselves out of winning against the Swans during the season, near the start of the slump. Nice of the Swans return the favour in a final.

The Blues definitely looked scared at times. The old adage about learning more from a loss needs a caveat for finals – making mistakes in a close win and getting another match the following week is a better learning experience than losing and ending your season.

Bring on next week, with a slightly more hardened bunch of Blues on the field 😁

Finals Fix: Forget Charlie and Harry - it was Blues' sensational smalls that sunk the Swans

If there was a hypothetical GF played tomorrow, you think it would be played at those venues?

Footy Fix: Sure, they're fifth... but like it or not, the Blues are officially the best team in it

Blues fan here. I think it’s a bit much to say we’re outright best. Sure we won against Collingwood and Melbourne but…

– we beat the Pies by about 3 goals when they missed 3-4 easy shots on goal. Despite the Blues dominating a lot of the game, the Pies’ bad kicking was responsible for the margin and maybe the result.
– we beat the Demons by 4 points, or the thickness of Marchbank’s fingernail.

Sure, we won, but I don’t think those victories justify us being favourites in a hypothetical GF tomorrow. I think we’re 50/50 against the Pies, Demons and Lions, and favourites against the rest.

Still, I thought we’d be a top 4 side this year and we are, despite the slump. Hurrah!

AFL Oracle: Which of last year's preliminary finalists is set for a shock fall from grace in 2023?

The difference is the danger to players. Getting the ball to the safety of the boundary line has no direct dangerous outcome.
Seeking a free kick for high contact is the opposite.
No teenagers should be taught to literally and deliberately risk their neck for a free kick, but Jack was and said it out loud. The crack down had to happen.

BRETT GEEVES: What's the ducking difference between Joel Selwood and Jack Ginnivan?

Carlton’s best is good enough to be a top 4 team, and that could have been achievable this year with fewer injuries down back. Inconsistency and injuries have resulted in a situation where we could end up outside the 8, but getting Weitering back and (touch wood) no more key position injuries, we should avoid that.

Losses in the last few weeks – Saints because we failed to kick straight, Richmond because we tried a clean handling game plan in the wet. Both winnable, could have guaranteed finals.

Looking back, I wonder if Voss deliberately stuck to the same game plan against Richmond as a developmental test for the team. Would always prefer the win, but that kind of result teaches the team a lot about their limitations in executing in difficult conditions – aka finals.

Hopefully it’s all building towards a flag (or more!) in the next few years, and this year’s horror injury run isn’t repeated.

Is Carlton suffering a form slump or signs of something deeper?

A win is a win is a win.

For so many years, the Blues have been losing honourably to the top teams then finding ways to lose against everyone else.

Gotta create that winning culture somehow, and each hard fought win is absolute gold in terms of team belief and culture. Sure, there will be close games that we lose, but this is so early in the Voss era that it bodes of amazing four quarter footy if (when?) the team reaches that level.

AFL Friday Footy Fix: The Blues are the AFL's clutchest team... but it can't last

Yeah, a lack of public reaction suggests to me it’s a non-issue, not that the penalty was too severe. Smith has done his time and that’s the end of it. The public have moved on.

Lack of outrage shows Smith’s Sandpaper punishment was way too harsh
