Get rid of the A-League pretenders: We want to see the Mariners bombard the Phoenix bus, the perfect grand final in waiting

it makes sense that the AFL would pump a lot of money into NSW and Queensland because where else are they going to spend their money?? no other nation on earth is ever going to play that game (excluding Nauru) at a professional level.

NRL has options to consider as it is a “rugby” code and could conceivably become bigger in the Oceania/pacific rim region.

so expect them to keep pumping billions into the northern states, but when FTA media dies off and media fragmentation continues, sports will have to work harder to get casual followers. Grassroots is very important in that respect regardless of the sport.

Show us the bottom line! Football fans deserve to know the state of the APL's finances and the leagues they support

A League and Super Rugby in Australia surviving off small budgets. Very similar in that respect.

Both have mens and womens national teams, junior national teams etc… that need to be funded.

Both games played across the world, obviously football being much bigger than rugby.

Only differences is that football at grassroots level is massive, huge participation and playing base. Rugby is miniscule and niche in Australia in comparison.

Also both our national teams have huge profiles and fan bases across the country. Rugby only has the wallabies, their womens team hasn’t evolved to that level and probably won’t ever match the Matildas profile.

Anyway, both sports somehow surviving with little money in Australia at the professional level whilst AFL, NRL and cricket have all the money and profile.

Netball the same but it’s only got a women’s league that has any sort of profile in this country.

sad but true.

Victoria only has one love – AFL.

Nothing else matters.

I admire the fact that there are players who have come from that state and played professional level football because all I see and hear down there is wall to wall AFL.

and yes i can see why it’s easily the most underperforming state. Especially in terms of registered players.

Yes i noticed that too on reading the annual report. Biggest grant ever from WR to RA = $31 Million.

Without that grant, the numbers would look even worse.

World Rugby have done everything they can to keep RA and the professional game afloat in Australia with that sort of contribution.

NZR contributing the extra $8 mil from their media deal.

RA are very lucky. Waugh and Herbert shouldn’t even be there. they both should have gone after the world cup overspend.

Rebels' Super future hanging on creditors' Friday vote as Rugby Australia set to go against plan

“A RWC final on an oval field in a non rugby state”
Rugby Australia are desperate and will accept it, won’t matter because the wallabies won’t be in the final.
The money will be too good to refuse.
Terrible venue to watch rugby or any of the other codes that aren’t AFL or cricket.

Rebels' Super future hanging on creditors' Friday vote as Rugby Australia set to go against plan

the Matildas are going to be subsidising the new NSD. (FA have the NSD under their control) Oh the irony……

that’s what is going to happen.

Giancarlo Italiano's rise is the best story in the A-League

Superstar NRL player, star AFL player etc..etc..etc…

they use that term all the time. It’s hilarious.

Every person that plays in either of those competitions is a “star”.

Does the A-League do enough to nurture creative players?

“Sydney built a stadium a million miles away from the CBD, that I know, friends who live in Sydney, and local rugby supporters hate going to. ”

you wonder why the game of rugby in Australia is where it is today.

the stadium and location is fine for big games, and another metro station is currently being built as we speak to make it easier to get to Olympic Park from both the west and the city.

maybe if Rugby Australia could engage over 80% of the whole city, then you’d might get better participation and spectators to the game.

Rebels set to sue Rugby Australia as civil war erupts, Rugby Victoria President barred from summit

yes they can but you aren’t fans of the game.

I don’t post on the AFL tab because I don’t follow it or care what happens in that game.

Obviously people who don’t care about the game/league comment on here to rile up others.

Anyway, each to their own.

How do A-League fans convince police that passion is not a crime?

“the bigger question is why would you post on a football specific sub when 90% of your posts are about cricket?”

bingo.

How do A-League fans convince police that passion is not a crime?

look at the RBB outside of derby matches and it’s one quarter the size, so the majority only turn up to the derby.

that statement unfortunately comes across as a bit hostile, especially this part ” make damn sure that you’re also bringing 90 minutes of hell for those who aren’t us”

they reserve this type of statement for the derby matches.

Definite leadership problem, their capos don’t stamp out the issues with the idiots who turn up twice a year for the derby games.

How do A-League fans convince police that passion is not a crime?

Hog, they are flogging a dead horse.

'Ready to go': Jaguares set for early return to Super Rugby if Rebels fall over

Flogging a dead horse in Australia.

RA have very few options and now are stuck with Super Rugby as their only fully pro comp till 2030.

Unless eligibility rules change (where it’s an open player market), then expect more of the same in Australia.

'Ready to go': Jaguares set for early return to Super Rugby if Rebels fall over

Men’s world cup will make money, but may only pay off the debt that is accumulated reaching that point in 2027.

the women’s world cup will be small, at most 10 nations, and won’t generate the interest that the womens soccer world cup did.

if Rugby Australia can survive, have 4 super rugby teams and have $10 million in the bank come 2029, then they’ve done well.

Exclusive: Rugby Australia makes sweeping redundancies as governing body braces for 'economic headwinds'

appalling crowds for a so called “national team” and yet they get the coverage.

Perth Glory's long-suffering fans deserve their change of fortune

agreed.

the options are there, but it’s a long road ahead. no easy solutions.

AFL and NRL are too popular and have too much money now in Australia.

Pro rugby can still survive in Australia though but things have to change for it to truly prosper.

Poaching NZ coaches won't solve the Wallabies' woes - the real solution is a lot less sexy

That’s another cultural problem with the game in Australia.

it’s a private school game by optics of the players who play in the Super Rugby teams.

they need to get into the public schools and give kids an option to play the game.

there is some work happening there in Victoria and WA but it needs more time and money.

Poaching NZ coaches won't solve the Wallabies' woes - the real solution is a lot less sexy

A-League is expanding to 14 teams next year – Auckland and Canberra.

yes they have to rely on private investment (rich owners) but football is a global game so investment can pay off later because of young talent being scouted and then sold on to bigger and more lucrative soccer leagues.

A League and the owners know their place in the global scheme of things.

Also soccer in Australia is number 1 in participation and registered players by a fair distance. Rugby is barely in the top 20 for participation.

Rugby and Rugby Australia have to be humble and realise they aren’t the biggest show in the country and will never challenge AFL or NRL.

But the pro game could still survive in Australia, it just needs to be smarter and yes that starts with the grassroots and getting kids playing the game. It’s not glamorous but that is where the best hope starts.

Poaching NZ coaches won't solve the Wallabies' woes - the real solution is a lot less sexy

that womens cricket test was played at the WACA in Perth, crowd looked sub 2k.

next week Matildas playing once again to a sold out home stadium of 53k at Docklands.

typical of mainstream media.

Perth Glory's long-suffering fans deserve their change of fortune

a domestic competition would work best for Australia. We have one for basketball (NBL), football (A-League), netball (Super netball), cricket (Big Bash) etc…

then they can play a champions league style format for our top teams against NZ top 2 teams, Japan top 2 etc…

CONFIRMED: Rebels CEO made redundant and coaches have contract cuts as hopes of Super Rugby survival fade

outside of expat Kiwis, South Africans and rugby die hards, there is very little interest in Super rugby in this country.

club rugby is doing ok in NSW and Queensland.

Let NZ have super rugby, that’s what needs to happen.

“Melbourne can support a professional SR team or not”

Melbournians love attending and watching sport, hence why they have pro teams in various sports.

But i feel with rugby there just isn’t the interest or fanbase in that city.

The Rebels are essentially gone after this season. No one in the current situation could bail them out (billionaire business people excepted).

CONFIRMED: Rebels CEO made redundant and coaches have contract cuts as hopes of Super Rugby survival fade

Victorians have little care for rugby, their government only care for big events hence them bidding for hosting rights of the 2027 rugby world cup final.

Having just $17,300 in the bank and millions in debt, unless they start up a new company and re-start again, then the Rebels are gone.

Will mean a reduced fee to pay by Stan to Rugby Australia, and the next TV/media deal will be affected with less content.

but Australia are stuck with super rugby.

CONFIRMED: Rebels CEO made redundant and coaches have contract cuts as hopes of Super Rugby survival fade

Super Rugby is going down the drain in Australia. it’s inevitable.

the sooner it dies the better. Let NZ have it.
