Was never quite sure if Abbott was quite good enough. Happy to be proved wrong by that performance! Wouldn’t mind seeing this XI for the last game (if the selectors are brave enough). 1. Inglis 2. McGurk 3. Green 4. Smith 5. McDermott 6. Hardie 7. Sutherland 8. Abbott 9. Bartlett 10. Zamps 11. Morris. I know it is bowler heavy but Sutherland and Abott showed they are handy with bat and do we really learn anything more about what Labs can do in middle order by playing him.

Triple threat Abbott steps out of Big Three's shadow with all-round excellence to save Australia's bacon against Windies

Smith not an opener and Green not playing well enough to hold down no 4. Selectors have created a mess. How will they fix it? What will NZ squad look like?

Aussies face huge call over batting experiment with Smith and Green failing again as Windies turn Test on its head

Just tried to pick an XI from that squad. Seems like Smith will open, Labs at 3 and Green, Maxwell Hardie in middle order. Also that they have moved on from Stoinis in favour of Hardie. Would have preferred to see Agar in squad ahead of either Ellis or Abbott. Agar is world class while Ellis/Abbott both are more fill in players who will never be selected when Cummins/Starc/Hazlewood are available.

'Best six batters in the country': Smith will open and Green returns as Bailey denies Bancroft rift over Sandpaper saga

An option to get Cam Green back playing cricket rather than carrying drinks would be to promote Smith to open in the ODI team (replacing Warner) and then bring Green into ODI team at 4. Let him settle back into a team in his preferred position and get some form back.

Every Australian Test opener option, ranked: Why sending Smith up is a recipe for disaster

Not watching but Renshaw seems to be batting very slowly – Is he actually doing his chances more harm than good? If he cant be aggresive against 2nd string Pakistan attack how will he go against more lively bowlers?

Opening contenders botch golden chance to press Test selection claims but Harris bullish about replacing Warner

Maxwell innings extraordinary. A delight to watch. However cant help feeling Aust missed a trick to bowl Green into some confidence. Cummins didnt bowl him at all. Youngster needs some suport and the lack of it from his Capt looks like it is messing with his head.

Mad Max: Big Show clubs fastest ever World Cup century as Aussies demolish the Dutch in record-shattering shellacking

Agreed. Carey’s keeping has been good but Inglis has shown he is a superior batsman and has the necessary grit. See Marsh odi final. WA quite likely to go back to back in T20, ODI and Shield. Maybe one more west Australian in the test team wouldn’t be so bad. Or even 2 with Cam Bancroft. Or 3 with Inglis, Bancroft and Richardson.

'Once in a generation' Green comes of age, Carey roasted for 'softer than butter' dismissal: Talking Points

Happy with Paris but worried Murphy might get crucified on non-turning wickets. Would rather encourage him to play county so he is available. Same for morris, Harris and Handscombe.

Third time lucky for opener emerging from crowded pack to replace struggling Warner for Ashes

Ok have tried to pick uk touring team for WTC and Ashes. Unfortunately I can’t find room for Dave Warner. Selectors have responsibility to pick team to win and blood players for future. Unfortunately Dave Warner doesn’t meet either criteria. Also missing out will be Harris and handscombe which seems terribly unfair but can’t squeeze them in. Assuming 17 man squad the starting XI would be Kawaja, Bancroft, Lab, Smith, Head, Green, Carey, Cummins, Starc, Lyon, Hazlewood. Reserve bats Renshaw and Inglis (also wk), seamers Boland, Neser and Morris, spinner Swepson.

Third time lucky for opener emerging from crowded pack to replace struggling Warner for Ashes

Agree on regions. Why not select 3 regional towns (say Canberra, Newcastle, Bendigo) and ask the next three summers tourists to send an u25 team (with up to 2 older players) to play in SS based in those regional towns. So 9 teams but each state only play the ‘invitees’ once and they can play each other twice. By the time a country tours Aust they will have players who can have spent up to 3 summers in Aus. Great for regional Aust. Potential improvement in regional facilities. Aust seen as supporting red ball cricket internationally. SS gets a real international flavour.

Why Sheffield Shield should add a team to include English cricketers

Finding it hard to see how ENG make the last four. I have PAK coming 4th on 11 points. ENG need to beat both IND and NZ to get to 12 points – don’t see it happening. By my calcs 1 v 4 will be IND v PAK and 2 v 3 will be AUS v NZ (basically doesn’t matter whether AUS or NZ wins the pool game – they are finishing 2, 3 or 3, 2). So both semi-finals should be crackers! SL will be unlucky to miss out on 10 points and ENG to finish 6th.

Australia leave England in World Cup disarray

Stoinis – I dont think Stoinis is in the best XI and NCN is the best batter of the remaining bowlers. If you replace Stoinis with a batsman you need Maxwell to bowl 10 overs so I think you need to replace him in the XI with a bowler. I agree its not ideal but that is the squad they picked. Alternatively, could Smith and Maxwell share the overs and play an extra batsman? Is Smith’s elbow up to it?

Marcus Stoinis lucky to be in World Cup squad

Stoinis isn’t in my XI – I would pick NCN to share overs with Maxwell and be late order hitter (bat at six or seven). Cummins, Starc, Richardson and Zampa for the other 40 overs.

Australia's Cricket World Cup squad is too conservative

What is the chance of NCN playing as the bowling all rounder and sharing the 10 overs with Maxwell? His bowling stats (Average, economy and S/R) are far superior to Stoinis and his T20 batting is comparable (similar average, better S/R). Stoinis ODI batting stats stronger, but most recently he has been poor. NCN genuine wicket taker and if he leaks too many runs, Maxwell can bowl more overs. Also a good late order hitter who goes from the first ball. Not convinced by Stoinis at the moment and can’t really see why NCN picked if it isn’t to bat at 6 as he isn’t really in the same bowling class as Cummins, Starc or Richardson.

Marcus Stoinis lucky to be in World Cup squad

I think the squad is unbalanced. They have picked 7 batsman/allrounders for six positions in the XI compared with 5 fast bowlers for only 3 positions. Of the 7 batsman, three are accumulators. Personally don’t think Stoinis has done enough on form. Think Handscomb is desperately unlucky and I would have picked him ahead of Smith just on form as Smith hasn’t really done enough in IPL to warrant selection. Could also consider NCN as the fast-bowling allrounder instead of Stoinis (both his batting and bowling has been better than Stoinis recently) and picked Turner instead of Stoinis. That would give you more power hitting at the close. Squad would be more balanced with 8 batsman/allrounders for 6 positions and 4 pure fast bowlers for three positions. Smith and Stoinis very lucky. Handscomb very unlucky.

Australia's 2019 Cricket World Cup squad: Expert reaction

Agreed. Stoinis not in my WC squad. Would rather have NCN – better bowler and currently better batsman.

Smith building World Cup form in IPL

My XI is:
Khawaja
Finch
Warner
SMarsh
Smith
Maxwell
Carey
Cummins
Starc
J Richardson
Zampa

with Handscombe, Lyon, NCN and Turner in squad. Big omission is Stoinis – just hasn’t performed at the right time. NCN is better bowler and at present better batsman. The 4 reserves give you a reserve keeper that doubles as an accumulator, an extra spinner for slow pitches, a medium-fast that can bat and a reserve striker/finisher. Strong opening partnership of Finch/Khawaja maintained. Hazlewood comes in if J Richo or Starc don’t recover from injury.

VOTE: Pick your Australian squad for the 2019 Cricket World Cup

Assuming you are expecting 10 overs out of Maxwell/Stoinis then you need 4 bowlers, 6 batsmen (incl all rounders) and a wk for your XI. Your squad has 7 bowlers for 4 positions in the XI and only 6 batsmen/all-rounders for 6 positions in the XI. So immediately you have at least one bowler too many and a batsman short. I can’t see K Richardson making the cut. Either Ashton Turner or S Marsh added, depending on who performs best in UAE. Remember if a squad member suffers an injury that rules them out for the tournament they usually allow a substitution. So if one of the quicks breaks down they will likely sub them out.

My ICC World Cup squad: Australia

I agree with that XI although I would bat Patterson above Head. I think the XI is easier to pick that the six reserves that make up the touring party. I have assumed they will take specialist opener (1), middle order batsman (1), reserve keeper (1), extra spinner (1), fast bowlers (2). To round out touring party I would take: Renshaw (proven in England and Harris failed to take opportunity against SL); Maxwell (provides flexibility up and down the batting order); Wade (keeper who can double up as specialist batsman); Agar (spinner while not a wicket taker can maintain pressure and bowl lots of overs, and can bat. Would also be happy with Loosebuschange here); Hazelwood and Tremain (Siddle unlucky). That’s my 17 person touring party.

VOTE: Pick your Australian XI for the Ashes

Yeah – not much of a ‘bat off’ was it. Lets hope Patterson and Pucovski can make some runs. If Pucovski gets more than 7 runs I guess that means he is an automatic selection!

Australia's batting future on show in Hobart today

Siddle – are they serious!

Three changes confirmed in new-look Australian squad to play Sri Lanka

Seems desperate move by selectors. Dont mind dropping Marsh x 2 and Finch but picking a kid too early could destroy him. Pukovski is young and needs time to develop. There are guys playing shield with acceptable records (Burns, Maxwell etc). Why not pick them?

Reports: Will Pucovski set to be selected against Sri Lanka, both Marsh brothers dropped

Happy with Patterson for Labushagne however then you don’t have a second spinner in squad for England. I suppose you could add Labu’ to the list of candidates to play County cricket, and Agar as well, to give cover.

Six talking points from Australia vs India fourth Test

Test XI for England – Warner, Harris, Khawaja, Smith, Head, Maxwell, Paine, Cummins, Lyon, Starc and Hazelwood with Renshaw, Laubershagne, Stoinis and Tremain rounding out the 15 man squad. Encourage Handscome, Carey, Wade and J Richardson to get county contract as back up. Use Sri Lanka tests to bat Renshaw and Laubershagne in place of Warner/Smith and Tremain to bowl and rest Starc.

Six talking points from Australia vs India fourth Test

Does this mean the GOAT is leading the averages in batting and bowling? If so, and Head can bowl, isn’t GOAT the allrounder? Wouldn’t Aust be better having six specialist batsmen so retain Handscomb?

Is there more to Starc that just cleaning up the tailenders?
