Weird fight, Burkman didn’t look like he thought he could win!

Another 10-9 for Lombard but this is a very strange fight. Lombard needs to move forward more

Damien,
Great comment, very thought provoking. I agree the legal case is one of the biggest stories of the year, however I see it slightly differently from yourself. From what I have seen of the legal case the fighters main concern is the hugely (and they would argue unreasonably) restrictive contracts a fighter has to sign before being granted entry to the UFC. These include giving up your name, likeness, voice and almost all related interests in pertuety, not good however you look at it.
Unfortunately in situations like this we come back to the point where it is realised that MMA is not a sport it is a business and when the business aspect has more power than the sporting ethos we have situations like this: a few men at the top making all the money and the guys actually competing getting chump change.
It is true that everyone wants to fight in the UFC, but if Belator continues to grow that could change over time. It would be fantastic if in addition to a fighters union there could be a governing body which could oversee developments more effectively. Then the UFC would be a promoter, not MMA itself to the general public.
Biggest MMA stories of 2014
Yes, well made point. MMA is much bigger than merely the UFC and there does need to be a change in how fighters are dealt with. Currently it’s open season for the promotors
UFC versus fighters: Will the tide turn?
Oh yes, a union would be terrible for the UFC’s profit margins. But they have had it all their way for far too long now, maybe it is time to redress things.
UFC versus fighters: Will the tide turn?
It’s probably they will not see a dime for the deal directly. But they will see increased revenue from clothing becoming more standardized. We will see what happens 😀
Fighter uniforms: The UFC tightens its grip
Yes Andrew I completely concur,
The difference however that the UFC have over (for instance) boxing is that while the general public may have known who Don King was, they would have had a far greater awareness of boxing. Many simply know MMA as “UFC” and this gives the organisation a huge advantage in marketing.
If however athletes start to move to other promotions they may start to change their tune!

Hopefully a modification to safety equipment will allow the game to remain relatively unchanged
Cricket won't be the same after the loss of Phillip Hughes
Ah, thanks for correcting my so gently mate. Yes you are of course completely right, he does have a NZ passport and in his Pride days was always introduced as residing from there. Perhaps I should have been more specific on his origins and detailed that the majority of his training has taken place in Australia.
The main point of the article however is not his ancestry or what passport he carries but the amazing human story which is that of The Super Samoan. Hopefully the rest of the article did not offend you as much as the errors you mentioned.
Mark Hunt: The Aussie Cinderella Man of MMA
Yes guys, dehydration can be tested. The point is there are numerous methods of cutting weight (removing blood etc) which drain the body and need tie to recover from. Fighter safety is the first concern and there will be an increased risk of injury if there is a same-day weigh-in policy.
If the issue is to make the fights less reliant on athleticism, make the rounds longer and take away all referee intervention (stand ups and restarts) to make things more technical. Weight cutting is not ideal but at least let’s let the guys do it in as safe a way as possible!
What is your reasoning that one the day weigh ins are the best option?
Changes to MMA weigh-ins could result in deaths
Correction to this story – this has been called an interim title fight
Too old and too short aren't in Mark Hunt's vocabulary
However, great show, some great performances and a lot to think about for the future. Who will Aldo fight next? Mendes has a tough road back to the title, for tonight however, Jose Aldo is The King!
UFC 179 - Aldo vs Mendes live blog, round-by-round updates
All 3 judges score the fight 4 rounds to 1 for Aldo. Great fight from both guys but in fairness Mendes gave a great show, but fell just short.
UFC 179 - Aldo vs Mendes live blog, round-by-round updates
To review, Mendes did really well in the striking but was knocked down 3 times throughout the fight. A great contest which Aldo could have finished Mendes several times but I think it has to be scored in favour of the Champion…

The round ends as Aldo goes for the finish. Aldo climbs onto the cage…has he won the decision? I think so, 4 rounds to 1 in favour of Aldo

First round I would give to Mendes, he threw many more strikes and was the more active fighter. Damn but he can fight, the question is, can he finish it in Round 5? Either guy could wing the fight if they win this round, let’s see how it goes down. Mendes gets the takedown
