Pretty good article and I agree with your sentiments. As a passionate Geelong/Australian Football supporter, ‘Australia’s game’ will always hold a special place in my heart. In saying that, I also enjoy watching League and Soccer and have my own clubs, yet sometimes fall into the trap of criticising said sports in a similar way to how you described.
One thing I’d like to pull up though is your use of “AFL” as a sport. You refer to the other three codes as “Union”, “League” and “Soccer”, yet when referring to Australian Rules you instead use the name of its elite league. The sport is not and has never been known as AFL, in the same way as S15, NRL or A-League are not sports. Something to remember for next time!

Kasey, you’re right in that the AFL currently directly market the sport as “AFL” in the traditional rugby league heartlands. In saying that, this does not mean it makes sense nor does it mean it is correct. The sport is still officially called ‘Australian Football’ (http://www.afl.com.au/development/aflexplained/about/tabid/13532/default.aspx), and colloquially known as ‘Australian Rules’, ‘Aussie Rules’ or even ‘footy’.
“Zealots” or not, if we are going to call the sport “AFL” then we might as well also refer to our local EPL club or go out into the backyard and play a bit of NRL.
