It’s good arguing about “Laws of Physics” but it can only be proven if we have numbers. It is always a problem determining a forward pass like that even more so for a referee trying to run along with play live on the field.

The problem with this sort of rulings is that the distance between player A and B can be a problem. If Smith was a further 10m away when the ball was passed, the ball would have traveled a few more meters forward. What then does the referee call it? If he refers it to the bunker, the forward pass won’t be checked so who is to blame here now? We don’t know the velocity of the ball, the initial angle of the ball when thrown, the actual distance the ball traveled, the trajectory it was on, the speed the player was running, etc… Unless we know these variables we won’t be a 100% sure on this types of passes. But then in saying this, how do we expect the on-field referee to rule on this then? He just has to rule on how it looks, just like how some of us react to a pass and immediately suspect it as it is because that is exactly how the ref sees it as. If the pass was called forward I wouldn’t mind the call. We only argue the “angles, the line, the backwards from the hand” thing only from the replays but how on earth do you expect the ref to know all these at a live glance? The live glance is the ball has traveled forward and caught in front, he rules, that’s it. You need accuracy, then measure all of the variables and write a report on it.

Did the referee miss a forward pass to set up a Cameron Smith try?

Instead of playing the ball why not just allow the tackled player to be eligible to just place the ball on the ground towards his hooker when the ref calls “held”. Like they do in Rugby Union?

It would be much easier. You want “fast” that will be much, much faster. If the tacklers are still holding on to you, you just place the ball down and the game continues without the 3 defenders. If they deliberately stop/block you from placing the ball on the ground after a “held” call. Then that is instant 6 again.

Currently the ref giving 6 again are not consistent. It’s hard to tell how much time a defender is allowed to clear the ruck before a 6 again can be ruled. The 6 again seems to be awarded according to the ref’s feel of the game. If he feels it is faster the ruck must be faster but when it slows, some defenders crawl on top of the attacking player, pushes him to get himself up and 5 seconds later after “held” is called the play the ball is done without no penalty.

However, if placing the ball down is allowed, this is much easier to rule. One “held” call is enough for the attacking player to place the ball on the ground (facing his own goal) for the hooker to play on it, if defenders try to avoid this than simple, six again should be awarded. It makes it easier for the ref to rule on this.

Dear Mr V’landys, getting six again isn’t always an advantage

Yes but he at least he represented the one Nation in all codes he played for whether good or bad. A great mercenary by your definition would be Brad Thorne. Played for OZ in league because they were good but played for NZ in union because he knew OZ were shyts.
You may dislike him but the people who picked him to play for Sevens or the All Blacks are the same people who keep being successful at selecting for the team. So whether he was a reserve or a substitute, he still was part of the back-to-back champs in union.
And he will be “Sonny who” to people like you because you only remember OZ players or the one’s who played SOO. SBW and many other Pacific superstars are well remembered outside of Australia and the NRL and because of people like him many pacific islanders are trying their hand in league.

If Sonny Bill Williams returns to the NRL, the Roosters have to suffer (at least a little bit)

I’m just happy to have SBW come back to NRL. So what if he is older and may not be at his best but as a fan growing up and watching him play, I can’t wait to see him back.

Even if he was ordinary with Toronto, he may just get close to his best with the Roosters like the Morris twins. He is athletic and under Robbo I’m sure he will do fine.

No one made noise when Teo (younger than SBW) signed with the Broncos. Is it because he is not a well-known, superstar like SBW? Or because Broncos are not doing well and the Roosters are?

If Sonny Bill Williams returns to the NRL, the Roosters have to suffer (at least a little bit)

Why don’t you use the 2018 Grand Final match over a regular season match to make a comparison. Which one in your opinion has more “bright lights” to it?

So if you had done a piece like this for the 2018 GF would you say Cronk half injured was way better than Smith? Or would you describe Ennis to be better in the 2016 GF?

We all respect and know Smith is good at what he does and being for a long time but nitpicking moments to suit your narrative is just rubbish.

Smith is the best leader/captain any team would love to have, he organizes and pushes his team and they listen to him.
Tedesco on the other hand does not lead but is one of the impact players that make a leader/captain/coach look good and that’s what we love about him.

Smith remains the game’s best player because Tedesco disappears in big moments
