Erm… I think it’s obvious McDermott isn’t as good as Finch, Warner, Smith, etc. at the highest white ball level. McDermott was lucky to get an extended run in that Pakistan series with Warner and Smith rested, and only finally after like 20 international games scored a run or two. Unfortunately there’s only 2 List A games for Aus A and there wasn’t heaps of point naming someone like that for those. But I’d rather see McDermott selected for Aus A over perennial flop Handscomb to be fair.

Fingers crossed Agar instead of Swepson!! IMHO, Leg spin in Tests is largely dead. There’s good reasons why even the best in the world like Zampa, Rashid Khan, Shadab, Chahal, Adil Rashid, etc. struggle in the longest format. Finger spin especially on subcontinental Sri Lankan wickets that will turn is the way to go.

Australia A and in the subcontinent tho. And Lyon and Maxwell are 34. Overall, its not bad to give international exposure to these young spinners

There’s fair reasoning behind these squads, and Bailey has followed up, saying that there’s room for overlapping – so Maxwell could blast 5 ODI hundreds or Maddinson could score hundreds in both the Aus A FC games for eg and be a last-minute adjustment to the Test team. Its good to see clarity given there. The only major injustice is Wade missing the ODIs after hitting an unbeaten 52 in his last ODI in the West Indies

Nope, you’re just giving time for Pakistan to bat when it’s relatively friendly to bat. We can’t just expect to blast them out in a few overs tonight. In fact, the opposite could happen. And then you’d sit here criticising Cummins for that.
Relatively speaking, it doesn’t matter what captains of the past would’ve done. Times change and life has moved on. If you have historical empathy, you can’t just sit here and compare people to those that have gone before.

If you look at the stats and like Pakistan have done, Agar would’ve been the better option – I’d have gone for Agar – but all the best for Swepo. Hope I’m proved wrong by his performance!!

You’re thinking is as if we’re playing in Australia where if you can get 500 it’s an achievement and of course it’ll be easy to get wickets. Welcome to Pakistan, bucko, where it’s much harder to get wickets as we’ve seen, even with a new ball. Cummins’ captaincy is sound, it’s better to get as many runs as possible in the 1st innings. If Steve Smith didn’t have that brain-fade we’d have been on course for 600 too. The pitch is starting to break up, but lets play out our 10 wickets and we’ll have to work for the consistently inconsistent, probably in day 4/ day 5.

Well, what we’ve heard from the Aussie camp is that all options are on the table depending on conditions and the bowlers haven’t done a lot wrong – no one is indispensable. I am inclined to agree tho that one of our pacers being left out for the 2nd spinner is the better option

Okay. I was mainly just floating ideas for how to fit in the 2nd spinner. I also suggested that Starc is the one to make way for Agar. Upon further thought this is probably the better option

Clarke and all these past players with their merciless, win-first, can’t-make-a-mistake, bully boys attitude was part of the team’s culture problems that resulted in Sandpapergate.
It’s also telling that he is called a “past” player here. Since his retirement, the cricket world has changed. Nations like Ireland and Afghanistan we used to “bully”, have gotten better skill-wise in all three aspects of at least the white-ball game. The lack of respect from Clarke shows that he is thinking like its 2015 instead of 2022. Hence there should be less media attention given to past players’ antiquated opines.
There will be natural anger & disappointed reactions to our World Cup exit and rightfully so, but as the timely saying goes somewhat like “Never make a rash decision based on raging emotions”.
There should be an internal review of what went wrong, but massive changes like some emotionally-charged fan commenters are suggesting are clearly too far-fetched, based more in the alcoholic beverage than from logical reality. There’s lots of factors into the loss, but in the end it literally came down to 1 game, the Aus v NZ one, and the nature of tournament is so fickle it doesn’t cancel out the quality of our players in international standings.
