Not just the batting, the bowling (40 extras in an innings is a disgrace) the fielding ( 7 dropped catches in the match) and the woeful tactics when Australia were 9 down were also to blame.
Unfortunately this wasn’t a one-off, and has been a regular occurrence over the past 2 years

Why, with a properly structured comp, shouldn’t NZR get close to NZ $200 million for a market a fifth of the size, twice what its getting at the moment?

Firstly, NZ’s economy is 7 times smaller than Australia’s. Secondly, The AFL and NRL have over 400 regular season games between them.
IF NZ expanded to an 8 team comp playing each team 3 times, you are looking at about 100 games. using your logic it would be more like a $35m a season deal.

As a black caps supporter, I feel too much is being made of this situation, and it’s a bit of an anomaly and not the fundamental threat to test cricket’s future. SA have stated many time that this is a one-off and all their future tours will not clash with the tournament. I sincerely hope that this gamble on domestic T20 pays off for them.
The fundamental problems are that the host nation gets all the revenue and the future tour program is not equal. Either ICC need to force countries to tour each other on a regular basis (this would likely threaten Ashes and Border-Gavasker every 2 years, so not likely to happen), or they need split the tv revenue between the host and the tourists. It wouldn’t even need to be 50/50, it could be 70/30 etc. This would massively improve the sustainability of the smaller test nations and provide a bit more of an incentive for the big countries to tour the small countries more regularly.

This is a poor article. World Rugby have explained why Kriel was not cited and whether you agree with it or not, to simply republish tweets from disgruntled English supporters, and not include their response is pretty lousy journalism.

If I was in the Australian camp I would be reminding the media that england have ordered the most docile pitches possible which is potentially the worst thing for test cricket and makes a mockery of their claim that they are putting entertainment ahead of the result.

I’ve never understood why people complain about kiwis not supporting the force. Firstly it’s not true, lots of kiwis support the force unless they are playing their own team, and secondly that’s completely normal. Do you think say when someone from Perth, for example, moves to Melbourne for work they suddenly start supporting Collingwood??

The Wrap: Super Rugby's two-speed expansion so far provides multiple headaches

The Force have only had 2 home games so far against the Rebels and MP so not much of a sample to go on. The rusted on Force fans have to be some of the most loyal in Australia, I remember going to Force v Reds on a thursday night after the Force had not one a home game for 2 seasons and there were still 8,000 blue shirts in attendance. I’m not sure any other team would manage that…

The Wrap: Super Rugby's two-speed expansion so far provides multiple headaches

Super Rugby has a terrible track record when it comes to supporting expansion teams. Think of the list of teams that have come and gone. I think the only team that has made any impact on the the playoffs was the Jaguares and they too are now defunct.
MP as they are currently set up are doomed to fail. They are effectively a team of kiwi players who have been overlooked by the other 5 franchises. they maybe able to compete with the bottom Australian teams but unless, like the Drua, they base themselves in Samoa and Tonga and tap into a player pool there, they have very little chance of surviving.

A good result but you have to question why they didn’t just give him the job last year.

CONFIRMED: 'I can't wait' - Razor named All Blacks coach from 2024 as NZR delivers another brutal slight to Foster

Free hits are one of the stupidest rules in cricket. The essence of cricket is a contest between bat and ball, removing any jeopardy for the batter runs completely contrary to that. And I know some will say ‘well just don’t bowl them’. Firstly no one tries to bowl them, and secondly the punishment should still fit the crime. The bowler is still punished by not being able to dismiss the batsman off the offending delivery, an extra run is awarded and the ball must be rebowled. That’s already a huge penalty for a minor incursion. Free hits are the equivalent of if a batter runs one short, then the next ball they have to step aside and see if the bowler can hit the stumps – its just very silly stuff in my opinion.

One of cricket's dumbest rules helped India stun Pakistan. It needs to be fixed, and fast

An extremely controversial time in the match to be making a call like that, you have to wonder what he was thinking. Had he called it in the first half when Foley was wasting time while the Wallabies were down to 13, I don’t think anyone would complain, but 90 seconds to go on your own 5m line? pretty rough.
Having said that, they still had the opportunity to hold NZ out and win the match so you can’t say that the ref ‘handed it to them’.

REACTION: 'Disgraceful!': Wallabies stunned as ref 'cracks under pressure,' hands Bledisloe Cup to All Blacks

I think there has been a steady improvement in play over the last 4 matches even if the results have been inconsistent. Set pieces, defence and the first quarter have all been improved. They have a new front row which looks high quality and a traditional 6.
I don’t think any international rugby team is truely consistent. Even during the golden years NZ would play really well one week and poorly the next, the only difference being that they were good enough to eek out a win when they were off colour.

It’s all about the destination for this All Blacks side, even if we're unsure how they got there

Great story but merthens debuted against Canada in 1995. The last game in 1994 was the Gregan tackle match. Stephen Bachop was 10 and never played again.

The victory that surely condemned Ian Foster

It’s a curious decision considering that even if Goodhue isn’t 100% they could have put Leicester on the bench instead to cover centre and wing, with Jordie covering 12. That would be a much safer bet than Havili covering 13.

All Blacks vs. Ireland: RTS named for debut, Havili to No.12, Scott Barrett back to flanker, Irish make one change

Interesting take on the Netball situation but isn’t it more of a cautionary tale for NZ Rugby rather than Australia. After all in Netball, it was Australia who punted the financially weaker and underperforming NZ teams thinking that that would improve the quality of the competition and increase revenue. Maybe McLennan thinks that he can use this to squeeze a bit of dough out of NZ.

The Wrap: Crusaders send a message to Rugby Australia to embrace excellence, not turn away from it

I think we should wait and see how the quarter finals play out before passing judgement. I think if this format was retained we will see that actually making the top 4 is the only way of winning the comp (how often do teams win 3 away games in a row) and maybe the pundits should focus on that rather than who squeaks in at 8th.
I think the real risk to the integrity of the comp of having 8 teams finals would be if the crusaders and blues realised that they could muck around for most of the season and then sneak into the finals and win it from there, making all the early rounds irrelevant. But that clearly hasn’t happened this year.

'Silly finals competition with no integrity': How Super Rugby rewards mediocrity

I think NZ actually put in bids for new teams but SANZAR awarded the licenses to WA and Melbourne, so not sure you can blame them for that.
NZR has plenty of blame to share for what has happened to SR over the years though. The decision to change the focus from a commercial product, which is what it was at the start, to a development competition for the ABs has killed interest in it completely. Look at the shocking attendances across the 5 NZ franchises despite how successful they have all been and the quality of rugby they play is telling. You add to that the demise of the NPC into a shambles of a competition and you realise things aren’t that healthy in NZ rugby.

Why it's New Zealand, not Australia, that's letting rugby down

They won the 3/4 playoff in ’99…

The Boks and All Blacks should try again

So the judiciary consider if the player was injured or not and whether the act was intentional? The referees are instructed not to take these things into consideration. Why are they applying different laws and standards than those that are applied on the field. Its completely baffling.
