Rugby is a game, that’s GAME. It was designed for recreation and enjoyment and, since the professional era, for entertainment. I cannot see how the Springbok approach is either enjoyable or entertaining….it basically turns what should be enjoyed and entertaining into a turgid and boring spectacle for those watching. I am sure that the Springboks are really nice fellows, and gentlemen to boot. But I would not cross the road or turn on my TV to watch them at present, because this is not rugby as I know and love it.

Why I don't understand the Springboks hate

How can you seriously “love a well structured and executed maul”? A maul is legalised obstruction purely and simply, and is one of the reasons rugby has become so unwatchable.

Use it? Lose it! A simple way to fix rugby's much-maligned maul

A simpler way would be to allow the defenders to bring the maul down, and by so doing win the put in to a scrum. Attacking teams would be forced to “use it” without having to be told by the ref, and would fear losing possession at the resultant scrum. The rolling maul is a blight on the game as you can’t defend against it and (as a defender) you can’t get your hands on the ball holder as he is “hiding” someher behind his tema mates (surely this is obstruction?). It was the only way that the ACT Brumbies were able to score tries and, to all except diehard Lions and Springbok supporters it is just plain boring. Amen.
