Marika needs to get out of the way? He’s not allowed to rush in and make a tackle as Jordy’s boot touches the ground? Bearing in mind he’s still got two steps to take before her have been able to make the tackle…You sure about all that?

That still leaves it open to be used tactically and that wouldn’t be a good thing. I agree it’s a difficult balance but we’ve gone from potentially the whole game to a quarter of it. Somewhere in there middle might be more appropriate.

He wasn’t falling back. Marika played what was in front of him and would have timed a great tackle. It wasn’t off at all, that’s wishful thinking. That’s the risk going to the air to kick receive, you can get smashed when you land
That doesn’t make you entitled to protect yourself with a dangerous play.
If Jordy was falling back maybe Marika stops before smashing him. It didn’t happen so we’ll never know.

Rubbish. He’s running in and no-one expects a ninja kick to the head. Get out of here. You’re not entitled to a dangerous action to protect yourself. You go to the air for a kick receive and you risk being smashed as soon as your boot touches the ground again. Perfectly legally

It’s dangerous play to stick your boot out like that. It really is that simple.
Marika isn’t required to stand back and watch. He can time his tackle for when Jordy’s boot hits the grass and likely would have. He’s still got two steps to make when Jordy kicks him and Jordy lands in that time

I don’t think 20 is long enough. It’s not enough of a penalty for a serious offence and both doesn’t provide a sufficient deterrent for foul play and is at risk of being used tactically.
I’d trial 40 minutes and see how that goes

He would have landed just fine if he didn’t kick Marika in the face. You’re not entitled to dangerous play to defend yourself. He can’t stick his leg out, studs up, like that.
He doesn’t do that and Marika puts a great tackle in and we all move on.

I dunno, that stuff happens pretty quickly. Maybe, but too much doubt to do much about it. It was just an awkward fall, in my view.

I don’t think it’s deliberate in the sense that he’s trying to kick Marika in the face. But I do think that it’s creeping into the game as a way for kickers to stop themselves getting hammered by a well timed tackle. That’s dangerous and needs to stop

Marika is entitled to attempt to time a tackle to smash him as soon as his boot touches the grass. His timing was fine. Jordy’s boot shouldn’t be in a dangerous position

The tackler is entitled to attempt to to tackle a kick catcher as soon as his boot touches the grass and without being kicked in the face in the process.
Anyone who’s played will know the simple joy in smashing a kick catcher with a superbly timed tackle just as his boot touches the ground. This is perfectly legal but sticking your boot out is not.

Because running isn’t considered dangerous in rugby. It wasn’t caused by Retallick doing something dangerous.
In Jordy’s case, he was doing something dangerous. He lifted his foot, studs up, at head height, and hit Marika in the face.

Dude, you’re wrong. Marika should be carded for getting kicked in the face; you’re making a mockery of yourself. Marika is entitled to do his best to time a tackle that smashes Jordy as soon as his boot touches the grass; that’s perfectly legal and he got kicked in the face for his efforts
Jordy, and all kick catchers, need to stop putting their foot out like that. It’s dangerous.

In my opinion Jordy would have been on the ground and been smashed. At the point of Jordy’s boot hitting him in the face Marika still has two steps to take to make the tackle and his hands aren’t near him
Jordy having his foot in the air like that was dangerous; intentional or not. It’s getting more and more common for kick catchers to do this to try and defend themselves but it’s dangerous. You can’t do it. Marika isn’t responsible for Jordy’s boot hitting him in the face so trying to claim that Marika has played him in the air is ridiculous.
IMO, If Jordy doesn’t have his foot there he lands and Marika smashes him with a well timed tackle and no one would be talking about this
