Make the GF best of 3 for greater fairness to teams and fans

After years of blowouts and shockers, do we finally have an AFL Grand Final worth watching?

Seriously ???? Access to the GF… talk to me if you live outside Victoria!
Make the Gf best of 3

Outrage as farcical Ticketek flaw leaves thousands of Magpies premium members without grand final seats

Make the GF best of 3

Grand final ticketing fiasco doesn't make top-tier Pies fans whingeing about low-quality seats okay

That is confirmed much larger audiences (in the host city) due to location not time slot

TOM MORRIS: The AFL's hierarchy is in shambles - and it's nothing less than a failure of governance

Gil’s miraculous ‘deal doing’ reputation is heavily inflated given the awful, exclusive ~30 year deal with Victoria for the GF. It was recently disclosed that Victoria now pays over $100m pa for the GP (to thwart Sydney hosting it). The AFL did not even run a tender process. Moreover, the deal disregarded the integrity of the competition (for the event which decides the winner each year!) and the ability to generate larger national audiences (confirmed by Bris 2020 and Perth 2021).

Another major opportunity coming up for the AFL to showcase its premier event in the time slot when the most people will watch, but unfortunately we still have it as a stupid day game. Forecast for Sydney and Bondi is sunny and 23C, so the audience in Sydney will be much less than half what it could have been if the game was at night when people are at home and watching TV. The NRL Grand Final will most likely have more people watching it on a national basis once again (3rd year straight) on Sunday night. No-one genuinely interested in growing the AFL should be happy with that outcome.

Its also worth noting that the fact that Western Bulldogs have received more money from the AFL since GWS has come into the competition in 2012 than GWS. Source AFL annual reports. So much for the Western Bulldogs ‘poor me’ nonsense.

Why the Giant-sized hate for GWS?

I agree with your point, but I think under the AFLs finals series method GWS went ahead of Sydney when they beat them and the Bulldogs went ahead of GWS when they beat them, so Bulldogs are the higher ranked team on this occasion (I think this is right, but tell me if not? It works the opposite for the losers of the respective finals so that they rank them for next years draft)

Fine by me, as long as each State has to pay up a decent amount for that right. It remains an even bigger joke that Victoria pays $60m pa for the GP and $10m for a one off soccer game between European teams, yet pays nothing for the GF. The AFL is selling itself (and all of us) well short, whereas the Melbourne hotels and the MCC members etc are the beneficiaries of a very large gift every year.

and the Swans would love to welcome the Bulldogs back to the SCG for the GF.

2016 AFL Grand Final fixture: Who plays who, where and when

The initial idea for the national competition was that the VFL would enter 8 teams, the SANFL 2 teams and the WAFL 2 teams. The Western Bulldogs should never have been part of the national competiton. They just got a free ride on the coat tails of the larger Victorian Clubs. Their 26 year history in the AFL has not justified their participation. They have never even made a grand final which is deplorable considering the equalisation measures including the draft and the salary cap which have been to their aid. It is so statistically improbable that this could happen – their record it’s just ridiculously useless. When the Bulldogs arrive in cities outside Melbourne, they do not bring the cache of the large Melb clubs. In so many ways, he add nothing and only subtract from the competiton. In particular, they are always at or near top of the list for clubs which receive the most financial aid from the AFL. In fact, since GWS entered the comp in 2012, Bullddogs have been paid more by the AFL than GWS. The bleeding heart retoric coming out of Melb for the game today vs GWS is utter nonsense and hopefully GWS give the Bulldogs and absolute hiding.

Giants and Bulldogs lead the changing of the AFL guard

Western Bulldogs should never have been in the national comp. they’ve had over 150 national draft picks and never even made a GF. Given 26’years of AFL with a national draft and salary cap, that is truly deplorable. They bring nothing. GWS helps the game to grow.

GWS Giants: This tall poppy is not for cutting down

Generally well said, but I think you are too generous to the Bulldogs. They have been more heavily subsidied financially than GWS and had more draft picks too.
