Agree about pastoral care, although it does remind me about the time I met the former Chaplain at Bolton Wanderers and he told me about working one on one with El Hadji Diouf… needless to say not much progress was made!

'Hate to be in his shoes': Olyroos coach explains why he's snubbed Irankunda for Paris qualifiers when 'I could be selfish'

I too was impressed by Yengi however Taggart was not the person to play alongside him. Im not the biggest Duke fan but I think it would have been better to have Duke start up top and have Yengi run off him. I like Rowles but he is no LB. Why Arnold isn’t picking Jason Davidson or Brad Smith I have no idea. Our midfield was very sloppy. Metcalfe, Baccus and Irvine (and Taggart) just continually let themselves down with their first touch and decision making. They really missed Goodwin, Boyle and Mabil on the flanks.

Baccus, Rowles net first goals as Socceroos cruise past Lebanon but Arnie sweats on injuries

As someone who has lived in Newcastle for over 15 years (I’m A Victory fan/member as I came from Melbourne but I am also a Jets member and consider them my number 2 team) it is clear there is a market for football in Newcastle. It is far and away the biggest sport here at grassroots level. When the Jets do well the crowds come to watch (much like the Knights apparently). Im not one for conspiracy theories but it baffles me why the APL (or the previous regime) haven’t moved heaven and earth to find a buyer for Newcastle when they potentially could bring in crowds comparable to Sydney FC and Victory. The 2008 season (which I witnessed) and the 2018 season (I missed as I was living in the UK) show that there is an audience here. It also doesn’t help that The Jets youth development is an absolute shambles. The best talent in Newcastle heads down to Gosford rather than playing for the Jets.

'Would be a tragedy': Can the Jets find a new owner, or are they about to spiral out of the A-League?

My mind goes back to a night out with some friends years ago. We were at a pub that had been packed with people watching NRL. We were there to watch the Premier League early kickoff straight after. During the game a goal was scored that made some of my friends cheer passionately. In whats was by then a largely empty pub security came straight over and told us to settle down. One of my friends responded that they weren’t telling people to settle down during the NRL game. Security chose to ignore the comment but I overheard one of them say to the another “I don’t get it, it’s only Soccer”.

I’m generalising here but I feel this sums up the attitude of many police officers and security at Football games. They don’t understand or enjoy the game therefore it must be trouble. This is a pipe dream but it would really help if police and security had enough people in their ranks that genuinely understood and appreciated the game. It hopefully would prevent a lot of these incidents needlessly happening.

Violence is not 'passion': Wanderers fans chuck a wobbly again... why is it always them?

Hmm I’m not so sure about that. I hear a lot of people complaining about lack of advertising and not knowing who is playing on what channel/platform. I think if everything is on P+ at least that (in theory) takes care of that problem for those with subscriptions. Then certain events can also be shown on 10/Bold/Play. It certainly shouldn’t be a big issue but I fear for a lot of people it is.

I’ve been the eternal optimist in regards to the 10/P+ deal but even I was mystified as to why Aus Cup and other events weren’t shown on P+.

I actually thought Keepup was really good. Although I didn’t realise it cost that much!

The APL threw a KEEPUP hail Mary and blew it big time. Is the NBL's model the way to go?

You missed Jon Brady who is doing very well as manager of Northampton in League One.

It's bigger than Ange - from England to Thailand, there's a rising Aussie coaching influence in world football
