In the days of the first 2 RWCs worth remembering though that the scrum packed very differently to later times, much finer line with the ‘hit’ almost gone (well it does still happen but a much closer quarters meaning much less margin for error and ability to right yourself after the hit).
Multiple resets also common in 80s and 90s whereas now it is almost always always a penalty or free kick after one reset or 2 at most.
Not the sole factor but definitely has made a difference….

'F-word the D-word': Eddie needs to flip the message, because nagging about ill-discipline is the enemy of success

Key to many of our issues is really defence – or more so defensive patterns and structures. As the saying goes – Q- how are you going to win? A- Score more points – or stop the opposition scoring.
Lord Laurie has some pertinent comments about this (and other items very relevant ).
For myself I was told by some pretty smart coaches years ago that in rugby it is actually more important to know how to defend than how to tackle, whereas in league it is the reverse. Probably less so nowadays but still some truth. Yet we have an ex-leaguie defence coach..??? Not necessarily a bad thing but looking at our defensive patterns we seemed (both against SA and Argies) to leave a lot of unprotected space especially out wide, and consistently were beaten or a lot of territory gained by opposition attacks into this space. Not sure why ( we have actually been doing this for a few years not just now). Seems to me that the structure in defence is the issue, if a defender has to make too much ground to even get to the attacker the tackle is almost surely compromised?
Or am I rabbiting on about irrelevant stuff!!

'Why is Quade running this team?': All Blacks great doubles down on selection issue, Fozzie says Eddie is 'right'

Good points, I would add:
– Kellaway definitely, Petaia no – injury risk (is he even fit right now)
– Leota or Salakia-Loto at 6 – both can play lock and are genuine ball runners (plus Lukhan now has NH experience)
– never seen EJ’s obsession with size for hooker – Faessler or Lachie Lonergan may be be physically huge but if we are not considering BPA then these give us decent scrum and can throw straight to a lineout. Lonergan as I recall did ok on last year NH tour

???? definitely ‘hands’!!????
Although’heads’ does make the analysis more interesting….????

Lonergan has better pass and overall game management but this is actually more critical in last 20 I think..
Tate starts with RL off bench (handy kicker to be on at the end too..)

No I think he gave everyone a 9 except for himself who got a 12/10 ????

Yes and the passers momentum also is a factor which adds to the argument that it was not forward
Considering that it was reviewed by TMO based on how most TMO decisions went I would go as far to say it was unquestionably OK!

Nothing wrong with the Cooper pass, according to the laws of the game it was fine. Lateral at most. Check the laws – there is no problem with the ball travelling/ floating forward as long as the passers heads are not moving in a forward motion.
I think the amount that referees (not only Jaco, but he is one of the worst at this) is simply missing incidents entirely and inconsistent application of laws.
2 points-
– the clean out of Nic White well off the ball
– Samu Kerevi’s half hearted ‘tackle’ of a player without the ball – this happens regularly without any penalties given
On the other hand – yes I think we encourage referees to look harder at us because we have a reputation for being serial infringers

Trouble is most NH referees make their SH counterparts look ordinary
Is Nigel Owens up for a comeback? ????

The only events(there are a few) that cost England the match (and the first test for that matter) were stupid batting like it was a T20 in a Test match, inept bowling and fielding for the most part, doctored pitches (to suit Bazball – funny that they also suited test match batters who were happy to bat all day a la Smith and Uzzy), and a completely inept wicketkeeper! Yes it wasn’t Bairstow’s stumping that cost the match, more like the number of chances he missed! No international team can afford a keeper as bad as he has been!

Some solutions?
1. Non Waratahs aligned coach
2. Select players on performance not the SR jersey they wear
3. Select players in their best positions (example- Beale is NOT a fullback, Hodge is not a winger)
4. Skills skills skills
5. Bring through the ranks some seriously good kickers
6. Fix defensive pattern (has been terrible especially wide)
7. Acknowledge that we are not good enough and set about fixing the obvious- we are sick of captains and coaches saying ‘we are disappointed’ after pretty much every loss (every match?) – of course we are disappointed!!!! – change what needs changing, continuing to do what we know doesn’t work is just stupidity

What legacy does Michael Cheika leave, and what does his successor need to fix first?
