Yes, and it’s part of the tactical play. How do you stop third men up, etc.

Zones and 16-a-side: It's time the AFL congestion-busted its Laws of the Game Committee

A quicker way to clear stoppages is to pay frees to the letter of the law. A free kick opens up the game much better than exhausting players to get numbers to the stoppages. With the 10m rule a free kick should hardly ever slow down a game, but the stoppages do.

Got it. However, does decreased talent also affect defences? You’d expect them to perform worse as well. Maybe that can’t be judged by the scoreboard? Is it that a lot of the talent is concentrated in the midfield? I tend to think lower scores has to do with overall pressure on the ball and ball carrier all over the ground. That could be misconstrued as the result of congestion.

Elsewhere I’ve said here that it’s unnecessary congestion resulting from failures in umpiring the golden rules of the game that I oppose. Not in close fair play.

Absolutely, and the GF had in the Bulldogs a team who have very quick hands etc. for the most part in accordance with the rules. However, there were plays in which congestion was fostered by the umpires allowing incorrect disposal as players drppoed the ball when ‘taking on’ tacklers.

‘Congestion’ should only be used for plays that should have been cleared by a free kick but weren’t. Or the tweaking actually created it. Otherwise, in close has always been a great part of the game.

Requiring players in the forward 50 will mean the team, with the ball in attack, will have potentially 3 more players than the defenders where the ball is, or at or around the 60-80m mark to rebound back into attack. Don’t think it would work in terms of the ball moving from end to end.

Interchanges added to the game’s speed until we had too many of them, then they added to congestion. That has been cut back and there might be room for a bit more. However, interchanges and much greater fitness have made the game faster. Rule and interpretation tweaking for the most part has been ill conceived and had deleterious effects.

I’d like to see stats on how many frees are not given in front of goal in congested play. If congestion ends up in frees up to 30m in front, you might see coaches sending fewer players back. Certainly, any turnover might then have a better chance of finding its way to scoring at the other end.

The talent pool included the Suns and later GWS who started with a lot of youngsters who couldn’t possibly match it physically and with experience, so their scores were abyssmal. Last year the Bombers were among the lower teams due to a one off reason.

Are they really so imperialistic in their ambitions that they’re trying to manufacture a sport product that will, big bash like, take the world by storm? It’s an ‘industry’ ain’t it?

Agree Macca, congestion doesn’t stop us attending or viewing games, it just detracts from the experience.

Ryan, I was so disturbed by the way congestion is dealt with by the AFL that I was moved to become a Roar rookie to talk about it. I see unnecessary congestion in the game, but also so players around the ball as a crucial part of it.

By unnecessary congestion I mean that actually generated by not umpiring to the ‘golden rules’ that evolved over decades to make the game the great spectacle that it is, and the great game to play that it is. Those rules are to do with holding the man, holding the ball, in the back and over the shoulder, and incorrect disposal. Tweaking interpretations away from strictly following these rules in the name of a ‘faster’ game, produced the need for more and more tweaking. Why they don’t see that 16 will still result in 24 around the ball is beyond me, and if you want to stop that by zones you need to put more players in the 50! Remember how the focus on speed had umpires allowing players to throw themselves at the ball on the ground, and then they tweaked with a sliding rule? That was always a trip, but somewhere in the manipulative rush, they forgot it.

Give frees where they are and unnecessary congestion will largely disappear.

The game got fast because of increased fitness and professionalism, and the addition of the interchange and quicker kick ins. Not because of tweaking. Tweaking got in its way. Zones and 16 – thumbs down. And bring back third man up.

I’m not the kind of Crows supporter who hates Port Adelaide, but Cornes will earn my ire if he tries to white ant Adelaide with unfounded comments.

Yep, played for North Albany.

Thought he was from around Albany?

I think McGovern will highly impress this year, and Adelaide will want him to stay. I do. Coming from the South West means Perth hasn’t got a perfect go home factor in it.

Kicking accurately at Dangerfield’s pace is not easy. It’s a wonder he hits the mark as often as he does.

Patrick Dangerfield vs Nat Fyfe: The best sub-plot of the AFL season

In contests like these, desire means a flot. Fyfe will be very very hungry. Danger? He will be the great professional he is, but is there a little decrease in desire after his Brownlow, his homecoming, and his need to justify his move from Adelaide (with whom he left on the best of terms)?

Like the Bulldogs, the Bont played out of his skin in those finals. Definitely a sign of things to come, but the consistency of Fyfe and Dangerfield may be a full season away. Experience and body maturity are a huge factor in being at the top.

Great article, Ryan.

On paper WCE have been up there often. On paper. That is a big question mark for 2017. Big enough to deny them favourite status.

Your argument re Mitchell holds well. A clever clever player with consummate skills.

Just one good reason why the West Coast Eagles are my tip for the flag

That’s good news. Like the cut of his gib.

Who's afraid of the big, bad Giants?

Well done, Ryan. Draw and depth will not keep the Giants out of the top 4, and, once there, they are definitely the current favourites. However, the GF is a day even the best have to bring their best and no team is perfect.

Best thing for Ablett. Let him enjoy his footy and see what’s still under the bonnet.

Ablett misses out on Gold Coast Suns leadership group

Agree and wrestling is largely low skill and leads so often to congestion. A pet bee in my bonnet. That’s why I’d like to see McGovern in the key position. He is clever, has superior hands at the top of the leap, is quick, can lead, and is defensively excellent. Really had just the one season. Maybe needs some developing into the role. I have enjoyed Reiwoldt so much more now he’s using his head and his agility more.

As a forward I don’t want defenders hands on me, and certainly wouldn’t initiate a wrestle unless it was unavoidable. Key position has to be ready for it, but a clear run at the ball, a lead, a good bump. Hands on me means I’m not doing my job. Ask Eddie.

Not sure you’re right about his work ethic (never thought to question it), but down back he could lose a little weight, particularly if he’s not pinch-hitting in ruck. Part of ir is his natural build too, I think, but you’re more versed in that than me, neh?

Yep, he’s at the Pies. He’s a nephew I think. Was also instrumental in a great Redleg GF win. Peter played in one but they lost it.

Yep, from 5th. But M Aish shouldn’t have been in b & w. I just remember an image of his father, Peter, who was Captain and FB, standing in the goal square at Norwood Oval, all black hair and bryllcream. A behind sails over his head, he turns to retrieve the ball, and kick out. What a long career Roberts had and illustrious.

How many of the players of those days have heard the final siren.

O, and Rick, try football in your dreams. I got into watching rugby in Sydney, during the great Wallaby days. Ove a period of two years I had a series of dreams in which I started playing rugby. Pretty soon I was a surprise selection in the Wallabies, had a reasonable career including scoring some tries, retired, and had a short comeback! Career over. Didn’t get into coaching though 🙂
