Just wanted to touch on one of the last sentences stating that this win is a needed boost for the lions concept. I have read this in numerous places and struggle to understand this attitude. If we are talking from a New Zealand perspective I can understand it, but not in the overall context.

Sample size from 1997,
1997 South Africa 2-1 series win
2001 Australia 2-1 defeat against current world champions
2005 New Zealand 3-0 defeat
2009 South Africa 2-1 defeat against current world champions
2013 Australia 2-1 series win

So in 20 years there really is only one outlying test series. The rest have been extremely competitive.

Not to mention the economical benefits for the host country and boost for the home nations through merchandise, sponsorship e.t.c.

Would be interested to hear reasons why people think the lions are in trouble, apart from scheduling. It’s once every four years how hard can it be?!!!

Oh, what exquisite drama

If they do get passed Ireland which is a big if at the moment, can’t see England racking up a huge win streak. Think the tour to Argentina at the end of the season with so many member missing due to lions duty will really test their depth.

Ireland stand in way of England beating world record

Chris, don’t think your point that he hasn’t made a contribution is fair. Top run scorer for the stars and only behind McCullum when it comes to ‘marquee’ player runs. If your arguing that he has hasn’t got his team over the line then that can be debated, but to say he hasn’t contributed is wrong.

Only one winner in club vs country spat

Ah love this piece! Anindya your at it again!

Why not be optimistic if your an Indian fan? Great series win over England and can Kohli do any wrong? Heard recently that he maybe looking to take up a short term country cricket contract to help improve in English conditions. Have to admire that if true.

Looking forward to this ODI series with England. India have been slightly more vunerable in ODIs as noted dropping a few games to NZ. Think the toss will be key to the series. England at present can chase well, defending a total………have to see. As stated previously the acid test will be when they leave the sub-continent.

The 2019 World Cup Champions start their campaign this Sunday

I think by the sub fielder as well!!

Australia vs South Africa highlights: Cricket, scores, blog, 2nd Test - Day 1

Am i right in saying India’s first tour outside of Asia would be to South Africa? Are you as confident as winning there as you are in England? Again i admire the good feeling that is around the India cricket team at present but on what we know statistics wise India have little hope in England. With a middle order that should be the back bone of the Indian side averages in England as follows:

Kohli – 13
Pujara – 22
Rahane – 33

Brave man to have your confidence!! Without looking up the stats and going off memory sure the spinners Jadeja and Ashwin have been very ordinary abroad. Of course a lot can change and with Broad and Anderson in their twilight there careers, but again brave man! oh if your taking any bets on that series ill have a few dollars on England!

Not specifically trying to start a debate on that series but more on my assertion that any team are going to struggle to win away from home. Just looking at cricinfo, before this recent win in WI (who i previously mentioned were the exception to the rule) India’s previous win away was back in 2011 against the WI. Have to go back to 09/10 a win in Bangladesh for their last away win against another nation.

England's collapse wasn't as disastrous as you might think, but worse could be on the way

No doubting that the collapse was embarrassing one, but something that seems to be becoming more frequent for all test playing nations. Would argue that it is becoming increasing more difficult to win a series away from home than ever, bar the West Indies and a draw against even Bangladesh may be a good result. Unfortunately can’t look at this objectively because of the small sample size. Maybe a bit more credit is due to Bangladesh who, i think I’m right in saying haven’t lost a home series to a predominantly fast bowling nation since West Indies in 2012/13. (Teams since Zimbabwe, New Zealand and South African.) Can we confidently say that Australia would of fared much better??

Looking forward to the up and coming series, hopefully will be competitive but wouldn’t rule out a Indian clean sweep because of the massive home advantage that teams enjoy. Anindya, you mentioned about the foreign players in the IPL gaining something from the experience, but would argue that it’s completely irrelevant. The pitches couldn’t be more differently prepared for a test series than a IPL tournament. Distinct memory of De Villiers batting for his life to save a test on a raging turner against his performances for Bangalore would openly show that the wickets are chalk and cheese.

Have enjoyed seeing the re-emergence of test cricket in India under Kohli and the ‘swagger’ return to the way they play. Seemed to an outsider that they were going through the motions under Dhoni and it’s great to see the side re-invigorated. Would like to say that for as well as they are playing as soon as they leave the sub-continent would fear that they would be included in the norm of struggling away from home.

Great article as always Tim.

Watching the game reminded me of the Broncos effort at Amii park last season. Just in complete control when defending the goal line. Love the edge defence on both sides. When Cronk and smith can’t crack you, you know your doing something right! We know from the Broncos last year where that kind of defence got them so think the signs are all there for a great end of the season.

The Raiders premiership favourites? Not if Ricky can help it

Have to agree with all the points you have highlighted here Sheek.

I think it’s time for a massive over haul of test cricket. The ICC need to look at how the rankings are structured and come up with a way to make series mean something. A simplified, clear and concise competition were the casual fan can understand why a team is ranked where. If you tried to explain to someone with no prior knowledge that this Australian team are the best in the world they would laugh at you. (admittedly they probably are with the weakness of all test nations)

Maybe i live in a naive world, but i would like to think as we become more accustomed to the digital age that peoples attention span will revert to type that people will again enjoy a war of attrition. Long way off, but always pictured when i retire going down to my local cricket club and watching Sheffield shield/county cricket. Would be a shame if cricket as we know it died.

Is Test cricket on its death bed, or just sleeping?

In what world can that be considered a good session for Australia?!! Sri Lanka scored more runs than the entire Australia team for the loss of 3 wickets in that session!

Has anyone any idea of each players average outside of Australia? Think it would make for grim reading….

While i wasn’t trying to dismiss the point completely, was uncomfortable as if we know their are numerous reason why parents don’t want their kids to play league/union than the other team has a big kid so no thanks.

Love what NZRU does with the weight grades as it gets the coaches to actually coach instead of the ‘give it to the big kid mentality” that unfortunately other nationals have. (was great when the big kids were on your side though!!) Generalising myself now, If it was the overriding factor then the pacific nations would be near unstoppable. New Zealand’s success in union can not all be put down to their Maori influence.

The NRL in recent years has been dominated by big hit ups/block plays leading to its height in Souths 2014 win. That is why the inter change has come down and will continue to do so so the game can be played by all shapes and sizes. This is why NZ won’t dominate league for years to come, (union is clearly a different story with a endless list of creative players and again without to much emphasis on it most being white), as apart from Johnson and Foran there in no-one.

Case in point was the recent test match. Not a great game by any stretch but it was a very big ball running NZ side, but with zero polish on the 6th tackle. The result, zero points.

It's official: The NRL is getting smashed by the AFL

Without knowing much of Canberra’s sporting history I’ll go with your analysis.

On the basis that WA league footy is reliant on Kiwis may have some merit, but to say it is very reliant is overstating the point. If there influence was so profound union in this part of the world would be infinitely stronger, even when taking into account a South African and British factor we know that isn’t the case and the force continue to struggle.

As for Kiwis disadvantaging other junior because of there size?!! come on, what a massive sweeping generalisation of the make up of the New Zealand nation and just is plain wrong.

Great article and in many respects the AFL are light-years ahead of any grass roots program (especially here in Perth which is a long forgot market until recent years) that the NRL are trying to implement.

But i would like to raise a few points. The first is i believe you can equate the recent success of AFL games in Canberra the same as you can equate the success of recent NRL games Perth. Good crowd numbers, but a measure of any long term success if a club were moved to the region? Questionable as i would argue these games are a novelty hence inflated crowd numbers.

The second is that while we can see the struggles that Canberra have, and St George, that i believe are in a worse state despite numerous free to air games and being in rugby league ‘heart-land,’ it doesn’t mention the fact that the AFL have 2 similar problem teams in the Lions and Suns. The lions have been active for 20 odd years, but despite substantial success are still struggling and have comparatively small membership numbers.

Suppose the final point is the rugby league has a far larger market, New Zealand, UK e.t.c and sports were skills can directly translate, (rugby union) that the growth/player pool is far larger than Australia alone. As it stands if the NRL and by association RLIF can get its act together they can eclipse anything that the AFL can do, as in my opinion there market and player pool is to a very large extent confined to Australia.

I really don’t have any concerns for the well being of rugby league IF the NRL can get their house in order.
