I love all sports, with particular affinity to all teams from western sydney.

I think a marquee player option for the NRL is a foolish suggestion.
As a life long doggies supporter i would hate to see us waste money on a marquee, everyone is replaceable!

There is not enough value in what these so called marquee’s could add to the club, its membership base, its sponsorship income etc.

There are so many new and younger players coming through the ranks that could potentially become stars of the future.
Not to mention the ones who are late bloomers and get overlooked altogether who then plug away in lower level comps in obscure places, for peanuts.

Also there are too many clubs who can barely pay thier bills now! Clubs should be aiming to be self sustainable instead of going to the ARLC to ask cap in hand for more….
If you wish to piss money up the wall give it to me and I will go to the pub with my mates!

NRL needs marquee player rule

In the professional Australian sports landscape, there isn’t many sports who can justify the need for a marquee player. Deffinately not AFL or NRL or Super Rugby!
Football is one and netball the other.

The marquee players role is to be a focal point for the marketing and promotions dept along with his/her on field performances to ensure the punters buying tickets keep coming back.

I believe the A league has it spot on with a marquee paid outside the meagre salary cap but also the allowance for an Aus marquee alongside the international. It is just a shame that some of our more senior socceroos who are drawing to a close on their careers are still chasing big pay days in the middle east or elsewhere when they should be back home plying their trade for the masses to admire in person.

As a side note are the children of these socceroos that could one day have the potential to pull on the same shirt as thier fathers; even acknowledging thier ancestry to Australia? I doubt it, they are more likely to be enticed to play for the country where they grew up e.g. England, Italy or U.A.E! And then if they are good enough try and come here as a marquee just to experience thier dad’s homeland!

What is a marquee?

All these comments come from a melbourne/victorian perspective, until you have played each code you have no idea what your on about.

I played football from nappies to teens where i played at a fairly high level making rep teams etc.
I then moved to Rugby League where i discoved some of the skills i had from football were transferable.
I then played rugby where i noticed that each position requires a different body type.
I then played AFL where i was told to not come back becuase i was too aggresive in the tackle yet gained 20 posseions every week from being aggresive in a pack situation.

I love each game for thier own qualities….
Football – technically difficult but physicallity is not a factor, with a high degree of mental focus(offside, tackling skills, vision etc) No fat blokes allowed at any level above park football.
Rugby League – simple game for those with a big build and low endurance, high degree of physicallity low degree of mental challenge.
Rugby union – complex game with numerous rules and variations, game allows for all body shapes and sizes to participate at all levels. Technical skills vary dependent upon position.
AFL – Simple game for those with a marathoners endurance and muscular build. no fat blokes allowed! Technical skills can be learnt in time, mild physically compared to other contact codes. Some strange nuances to grasp(Ball up/throw ins, tackling, handballing)

As a sydney sider i have had memberships for all codes at one time or another, however I attend A league religously, and RL and Super rugby more frequently, AFL has someway to go to grab more people here that are like me support all sports.

The code-jumping stops at football

I as a football fan and member of an A league club,I want no part of this fixture for one simple reason.

I can’t stand Manure United! I refuse to participate in anything they are involved in.

Manchester United coming down under and I don't care

I agree the socceroos need to be invited to this tournament to ensure future development of generation next.

Watch out Euros: Pan-American Copa could be a success

The smurfs defense is the worst in the comp and will continue to be so, while Wanderers are a defensive minded side. The result will be the same as the first derby but which way; that will come down to the ref……..

I think that there will be a solid Wanderers support base in the away end and I really am looking forward to seeing the RBB out sing the cove on thier own turf!

Sydney FC confident with or without ADP

This second derby for sydney will be an interesting insight into the current landscape in sydney football. With Wanderers chugging along with a game style that is gritty and determined, in comparision to sydney whom wish to play the beautiful game; it couldn’t be more of a contrast.
Regardless FFA need this fixture to draw plenty of bums on seats to ensure that the game and the code recieve maximum exposure in the mainstream media.
At the present time there has been little hype surrounding this fixture, for which thier should be bucketloads.
I know both sides fans are drooling in excitement and cannot wait for this to come, but does the rest of sydneys big event casuals really even care? Will they attend?
Only time will tell
