Range of sport and diversity in interest – well cld this be because europe stretches from the arctic to North Africa, from the mid atlantic to central asia, has a massive (wealthy) population in an area not much larger than Oz and a number of well developed (and bankrupt) economies and facilities with the addition of long standing rivalries and cultures? If holland played germany at anything i am sure they’d be media interest, in holland at least.
How many in europe? say about 800 million, maybe more. if only 1% followed a sport that wld still have an economic potential/ supporter base of 8 million. They may even get a mention on Eurosport. If 1% of Aussies are interested in a sport thats (say we are 22 million or so) 220,000. Or Paris compared to Dubbo. Sacre bleu, true blue.
Massive difference.
I think the number (percentage) here is much healthier and varied than you give it credit for.

What I've learnt in 15 years loving two sports

during winter? the only difference is that they have snow sports (ice hockey, skiing and curling and figure skating if you like that sort o’ thing). Football is still king in Europe. You might suggest handball (or whatever they call it) but its not that varied outside of countries where theres no perma frost…
I think Surfing, V8s, Cricket, swimming and Tennis get a decent slab of the media support here.
plus theres significant interest in Cadel Evans in cycling.
Plus theres a vibrant martial arts scene, boxing etc
Let alone horse racing.
just not on the “football” tab.

hows that conclusion reached? By saying football is just the same but different to AFL and NRL and ARU (and maybe therefore also Gaelic football and NFL)?
or are you saying fans are different to supporters? ie football fans but supporters of other sports? Does thismean you are saying fans and supporters are not the same?

so there’s no strength to the story (also reported on SBS and a few other sites… http://theworldgame.sbs.com.au/a-league/news/1065343/McKain-set-for-A-League-return) ?

if true, Adelaide wil have a reasonably good defence (if the all stay fit etc) to match its decent strikers/ mid. impressive goalies too – cld be a good year for the Reds.

Can the A-League survive as a selling league?

hopefully he stays fit – he seems to have had a run of injuries inthe past. plus his strike rate aint great, butmaybe feeding off the service of players like Hernandez, Ward etc is what he needs to get going.

Injury sidelines Victory star Thompson

melbourne swiss and scots takes umbrage at that suggestion.

Melbourne Heart FC name and logo confirmed

i think it comes down to what the decision is based upon – there have been instances of players being signed on the basis of a highlights package and or without the coach actually seeing the person in question playing. as you say the worth of the dvd (demo tape) is worth while in securing an introduction but the relationship should be contracted on more reliable grounds.

in saying all this havent there been instances where the coaches have (and still do) go overseas more and more to get players, and watch them first hand? the standard of player has risen over the 5 seasons as clubs realise that they need to actually do more than look at DVDs or similar. ie our off season see’s managers scoutig players in brazil and europe (for example) and these trips are often documented in the media.

An FFA scouting network could be the A-League’s cure

Professor or not Palmer appears to have negligently (wilful or otherwise) fumbled his expansion team’s potential badly this season and this may be the end result. All the sabre rattling now may not be enoug because the problem is the crowds in Qld have been, to be frank, pitiful and awful in the GC apart froma hardcore support of 5K.

What a disaster (albeit short term) it would be if the final was played in front of a half empty stadium. I can understand FFA’s anxiety to cash in and ensure the showcase game has a beftting atmosphere.

Gold Coast United FC poised to make history

Sure, the more carbone’s, vignarolli’s, bridge’s, miller’s and iffill’s the better. but when tageting these “experienced” players thats maybe best resolved by having an equivalent of an FFA trade commission as oppossed to a scout turning upto games with a sheepskin coat and making notes. a PR campaign to agents, stronger links with clubs and other unions might achieve the same?
