That’s why Australia needs to reduce their number of teams, problem solved

Five surprises, five disappointments and five things to figure out as Super Rugby 2024 reaches the end game

The high ball is his achilles heal otherwise he never would have moved from full back

Five things: What Beale has over other golden oldies, double pain for Brumbies as Blues expose Australia's biggest weakness

20 out of 30 make the post season in the NBA but equally to much IMO. Should be top 6 in Super rugby

ANALYSIS: Rebels rely on brute force over defensive integrity - but there's a sweet spot they can expose in finals chase

That’s true but I still think it will be different especially with NH officials, we shall see.

On a side issue, I saw the Cramps in 1990 at Selinas. Great gig

Five things we learned: One area Gordon must fix to convince Wallabies boss, ABs bruiser should be on notice

Yeah but it’s Ben O’Keefe, he’s hardly the pin up boy for good decision making especially when NZ players are involved. I’d love to see how one of the whistle happy NH refs would rule it.

On the one hand you have people complaining about the money that Jorgensen and Suaali are getting and on the other people are complaining about rugby’s inability to retain school boy talent. Well, this is the price tag for elite school boy talent and if we wish to retain it, that’s what it costs so could we make up our minds rather than this endless squabbling which achieves nothing

“A decision needs to be made to bench Suliasi Vunivalu and Jordan Petaia who have not been good”
Hmmm, I thought Vunivalu looked good, real good, running the ball in open field. Could it have only been me that thought that?

'Breathing life back into Australian rugby': How Reds revolution can supercharge several Wallaby careers

I don’t believe in cutting teams but teams need to play at a level their ability dictates. I really want to keep the Force and the Rebels but these teams aren’t SR standard. We need to take a leaf out of Twiggy’s book by keeping these teams alive and playing meaningful rugby so that these regions are still developing players. Could a new comp come from somewhere? Anywhere to solve our problems?

Wallabies depth chart: The list that dispels the myth Aussie rugby doesn’t have enough players

We have 93 players which to me sounds like 3 highly competitive SR squads. I think if we put our most talented players together the cream will rise. Depth is an issue but it’s at Super level. That’s where our diluted talent pool is holding us back.

It would be after Super rugby when the international matches are being played. You would think their team would be weakened by the loss of international players to accommodate the drop in standard much like the Tahs, Reds and Brumbies. It’s an opportunity for them to develop more home based players which I thnnk would appeal to them

Exclusive: Wallabies star to return to Waratahs in fresh blow to Rebels

Define failure? There are enough fans for everyone in a city of 5 million if you have a decent product and Melbourne does have a large Islander population. If Melbourne/Victoria becomes a region that produces players of a SR and test standard then I would be prepared to put money into that market to achieve that. Obviously you would have to draw the line somewhere but sometimes there is more to an investment than financial return

I hear what you’re saying but gees, there’s 5 million sports mad people in Melbourne and even if it does need some propping up from RA rugby needs to have pa strong resence there

Instead of trying to make a new competition and teams from scratch I like the idea of an Australian provincial tournament to played amongst the 5 current SR franchises plus the Drua to be based in western Sydney, possibly providing a rugby pathway for the large Islander population of there, to play a home and away competition after SR while the international season is underway. I feel this would provide a quality competition that could provide the 3rd tier we’ve been looking for and would be far more cost effective hence sustainable than the ARC and NRC

We can compete against NZ teams if we reduce the number of Oz teams. To develop quality you want the highest calibre players playing the highest quality opposition. To many players in the Australian Super teams aren’t of an SR standard!

“As I’ve now become convinced Aust cannot well support 5 SRP teams, the Rebel’s demise is a good thing for the sport imo.”
Yes and no.
Yes, it’s clear Australia doesn’t have enough SR level talent to to field 5 teams which both
diminishes the competition as a competitive spectacle and hinders it’s ability to produce top quality test match players. To get the maximum benefit from Super Rugby I personally believe Australia should only field 3 teams so from that point of view I agree, the reduction of one team would benefit both Australia and the competition.
On the other hand, a lot of work was put in to make Victoria (and WA) viable rugby regions where the game is growing and producing quality players. To just throw all this away would be a disaster so what is imperative IMO is to have the force and the Rebels playing week in week out competitive rugby to keep the game alive at this level for the benefit of these areas fans and players. NPC springs to mind but I can immediately see what a logistical nightmare this would be.
Still, if I was running, that’s what I would be prioritising, SR for Qld, NSW and the ACT and an NPC standard comp for the Force and Rebels. You know it makes sense!

France has a lot of money and are unashamed in their willingness to buy their way to the top if that’s what it takes. Why not Australia? How long have you got?

Meafou's time: Giant Aussie's rise from overlooked NRC prodigy to France's next big thing, new captains for England and Ireland

Couldn’t agree more with the general thrust that we go back to 3 Super teams to concentrate and better develop the top level talent whilst maintaining all the hard work put into the establishment of the Force and the Rebels by giving them and their fans meaningful rugby to play and support. This is the model RA need to put forward to get Oz rugby back on track.

A disastrous decline: 10 Years since the Waratahs won the Super Rugby title and reasons behind growing list of problems

I think that has merit but one thing I really like about him is the way he looks for work and involves himself in the play. Would playing 15 limit his ability to do that and if so it would need to be weighed up before considering any positional shift. The thought of an MN And MK wing combo has me salivating. What I would really like to see is Petaia given a red hot go at 15 to see if he can nail the position. OMG – that could be one ell of a back three!

WR seems to a great job at bolstering the wealthy NH teams. I wonder how strong Ireland… would be without their foreign contingent? I know it’s a pandora’s box bit Oz and NZ do have significant Islander migration and Islanders can be seen in many aspects of Oz/NZ life. Seems in the north they just play rugby

In 2021, when it was all so different, I started an article where an 8 round 1 final Oz comp would see the top 3 sides go on to play in a Super rugby Pacific comp. The players from the bottom 2 teams would be drafted to the other teams.

I was keen to preserve the 5 Australian provinces to grow the game here while the streamlining of 5 teams into 3 for the combined competition would develop more competitive teams at a Super level which would lead to better developed players for the national team.

I totally agree that Australia must have it’s 5 provinces to grow the game here but once I allowed myself to entertain the notion of concentrating our talent back into 3 teams, it’s hard to let go. Oh to have your cake and eat it

2014 Skelton was scary. He was like a man amongst kids and bullied the opposition. I remember one game he tossed Sam Whitelock around like a twig. I really thought he could be something special but his form fell away badly after that.
When he was named last year I was really hoping for more of the 2014 form but he seemed totally disinterested. Well he’s in the team now so he must be played to see of he can give us some of the edge we so badly need. I’d be starting him against France so he’d be playing against players he has experienced success against. If he can’t get up for that game. he never will.

Three weeks for Will Skelton to make his Rugby World Cup case

I thought that but did you see the video of Foley ignoring the ref’s instructions to wait after Kellaway’s first try? After so blatantly disrespecting the ref to then ignore him after he’s repeatably telling him to play is unbelievable! And it doesn’t matter if people think the ref got it wrong, he’s the one with the whistle. The result doesn’t change because people think the ref got ot wrong. I’m sick of seeing a dumb team full of dumb conceited players who keep losing games but if it works for you…

Rugby Australia, we have a problem
