Since Englishman James Moore won the first Bicycle race in Paris on the 31st of May 1868, Cycling has encompassed many forms of bicycle competition, ranging from road bicycle racing, cyclo-cross, mountain bike racing, track cycling, BMX racing, bike trials and cycle speedway.

The most famous Cycling race in the world, and one of the world’s premier annual sporting events, is the Tour de France which lasts 23 days and is over 3,500 kilometres long.

In 2011, Cadel Evans became the first Australian to win the Tour de France.

The other grand tours are the Giro d’Italia and Vuelta a Espana, while the king of the classics is Paris-Roubaix.

Australia get a few races at the start of the year, with the Tour Down Under starting the professional season at the highest level of the sport on the road.
