Following commanding performances with the bat and ball, Australia are in the box seat to claim the first Test against New Zealand in Perth. Keep up to date with Day 3 of the Test with live coverage from the The Roar, starting at 4pm (AEDT).
Entering yesterday at 4/248, Australia were able to reach a strong total of 416 before being removed from the crease – thanks largely to 143 runs from the white-hot Marnus Labuschagne.
Travis Head did himself a big favour with a solid 56, while 30 from Mitchell Starc in the tail helped push the total north of 400.
But it was the bowlers who stole the show soon after, with Josh Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc combining to have both New Zealand openers dismissed within ten balls of one another.
Jeet Raval’s horror summer continued after he was dismissed for one, while Tom Latham could only manage a two-ball duck. Kane Williamson dug in for 34, before being removed by a ripping catch from Steve Smith.
Henry Nicholls (7) and nightwatchman Neil Wagner (0) were also dealt with promptly, with only Ross Taylor – who enters today unbeaten on 66 – providing any solid resistance.
At 5/109, trailing by 307, the Black Caps have it all to do on Day 3.
The only dark spot for Australia, however, is a hamstring injury to Hazlewood which looked very serious at first glance.
