St Kilda meet Carlton in their annual Monday night clash at Etihad Stadium, with both teams needing a win after the disappointment of last week. Join us for live scores and a blog from 7:20pm AEST.

This will be the first time the sides have met this season and I expect there will be a bit of feeling in this game. Earlier in the season the Saints media department had a swipe at Carlton’s 150th anniversary jumpers.

Both sides will need to bounce back from disappointing performances last week. St Kilda were annihilated by a Hawthorn team that refused to take the foot off the pedal, defeating them by 145 points.

If there is anything the Saints can take out of that game it’s that they had nearly as many clearances as the Hawks. Leigh Montagna is in close to career-best form, and he followed up his Anzac Day medal performance with a 39-disposal effort in last week’s defeat.

Youngster Luke Dunstan returns from a week’s rest after suffering concussion, countering somewhat a growing injury toll which includes Jarryn Geary, Tom Hickey and Sam Fisher.

Meanwhile, Carlton come into the game on the back of a loss but with some momentum. Their last quarter against Collingwood was super impressive. They kicked eight goals and three behinds to four goals and five behinds.

It was a last-quarter performance that left Mick Malthouse wondering where the endeavour was in the earlier quarters of the game. Much can be said of Collingwood’s lack of effort in the last quarter and ability to close a game out.

Without vice-captain Andrew Carrazzo and Ed Curnow, the Blues lack a shutdown midfielder, so Jaryd Cachia is in the frame from the bench after collecting 27 disposals against Coburg last Saturday. Dennis Armfield is also included in this week’s squad.

Recent history has seen St Kilda dominate, winning four out of the past five matches between the sides.

But I think the Saints will struggle in this one. Last week’s performance showed how far away they are against one of the best sides in the competition. Even though Carlton have struggled in recent times, they wouldn’t have gone that bad.
