MATCH RESULT

Costa Rica would have to be the biggest story of the tournament thus, far beating Italy and Uruguay to all but seal a place in the Round of 16.

Costa Rica the better team no question. Italy hardly caused them any concern at the back. Pirlo very well contained.

Italy really lack creative spark in attack. Costa Rica took their chances and also should have got a penalty in the first half.

Italy and Uruguay now in a do or die clash to see which teams joins Costa Rica in the Round of 16!

FINAL SCORE:
Italy 0
Costa Rica 1

MATCH PREVIEW

Italy are coming off a strong win over England in their second World Cup match, but they would be foolish to underestimate a Costa Rica, a side full of confidence following their upset victory against Uruguay. Join us for live scores and commentary from 2:00am AEST.

Costa Rica produced the biggest upset of the World Cup thus far, coming from 1-0 down to defeat World Cup contenders Uruguay 3-1 in the opening match of Group D.

Joel Campbell was the star of the show for Costa Rica, scoring his side’s first goal to cap off a strong showing against the South American giants.

Having secured three points against Uruguay, Costa Rica have every reason to think that they can match an in-form Italy outfit and cause another surprise result.

The four-time World Cup champions are coming off a solid 2-1 victory over England. Andrea Pirlo once again dictated proceedings superbly with his passing in the midfield.

In good signs for Italy, the enigmatic striker Mario Balotelli also starred against England, scoring through a second-half header that proved decisive against the English.

While Italy will start strong favourites in this match, Costa Rica are full of confidence and just one win away from perhaps sealing a very unexpected round of 16 birth in the 2014 FIFA World Cup – something not many would have expected coming into the tournament.

Italy usually fire against strong opposition, but are prone to making life difficult for themselves against teams they are expected to defeat. Their disastrous World Cup showing four years ago is proof of this.
