After charging and fining Josh Hazlewood 15 per cent of his match fee last night, the ICC has now also charged Australian captain Steve Smith with dissent for his role in questioning an umpire during Day 4 of the second Test against New Zealand.

The beviour of Hazlewood and Smith was largely condemned after stump microphones picked up their disdain when Kane Williamson survived an LBW shout.

Third umpire Richard Illingworth saw a small hotspot on the bottom of Williamson’s bat and decided it was enough evidence to prove there was an inside edge.

Smith pleaded guilty to the charge of dissent for his on-field exchange with umpire Ranmore Martinesz. Unlike Hazlewood, his exact sanctions are yet to be handed down by the ICC.

Smith says he’ll cop whatever punishment he receives ‘on the chin’ but did feel he was within his rights to query the technology.

The angry DRS moment largely overshadowed a brilliant clean sweep by Australia in the two-Test series with Smith safely guiding the team to a seven-wicket victory in Christchurch to finish 53 not out.
