WATCH: 'It's still hot!' Comical scenes as Andrew Johns froths over shirtless Dom Young
Joey is clearly still not over Dominic Young leaving the Knights. The Roosters winger scored the sealing try in a 40-18 win over Brisbane.
He’s claimed almost every honour possible in rugby league and now Johnathan Thurston could be in line for a major multi-sport gong.
The North Queensland halfback is one of eight nominations for Sport Australia Hall of Fame’s annual The Don award, for the sporting performance which most inspired the nation.
Thurston’s premiership-winning golden-point field goal in last year’s NRL grand final against Brisbane is one of only two nominations not to have occurred in either the Olympics or Paralympics in Rio.
Michelle Payne is there for her history-making Melbourne Cup-winning ride on Prince of Penzance.
Australia’s women’s rugby sevens team are included for their Olympic triumph along with fellow gold medallists in swimmer Kyle Chalmers (100m freestyle) and rower Kim Brennan (single scull).
Decorated cyclist Anna Meares was nominated after being Australia’s flag bearer at her final Games in Rio where she became the first Australian woman to win medals at four Olympics.
Wheelchair tennis player Dylan Alcott joins the list for his two golds in the Rio Paralympics, while war veteran leg amputee Curtis McGrath is also in the hunt with his Paralympics victory in canoeing.
The Don award, named after Sir Donald Bradman, is now in its 32nd year, and was claimed by Jason Day on his rapid rise to the top of world golf in 2015.
The winner will be announced on October 13.
Nominations: Dylan Alcott, Kim Brennan, Kyle Chalmers, Curtin McGrath, Anna Meares, Michelle Payne, Australian women’s rugby sevens team, Johnathan Thurston.
