Have you ever felt overwhelmed by the sheer volume of sport available for your consumption? If you haven’t, you should be prepared to over the final months of 2022.

The biggest sporting event in the world, the FIFA World Cup, all but blacks out the sporting calendar in December. No event organisers want their tournament overshadowed by the unmissable action going down in Qatar.

Add to that the pandemic which has made a mockery of major events over the past few years, and you start to see why October and November 2022 will be remembered as sporting heaven.

Sports opinion delivered daily

Postponed major tournaments from the past year, such as the Rugby League World Cup, the (ongoing) Rugby World Cup, and the T20 Cricket World Cup (originally scheduled all the way back in 2020), have all been slotted into this period right before FIFA’s trademark tournament begins.

International series such as Formula 1 have had to make adjustments around the FIFA World Cup too. Their season end has been brought forward to avoid a clash with the tournament, adding to the upcoming chaos in the sporting world.

The Constellation Cup is one of international netball’s biggest prizes, with the Diamonds and the Silver Ferns battling it out over four games in October, keeping well clear of that November 20th kick-off date. The Wallabies are heading off on their Spring Tour, with four of their five games being played before the action in Qatar begins.

The finals of two of tennis’ biggest tournaments, the Davis Cup and the Billie Jean King Cup (formerly Federation Cup) will be played in the coming months. The Davis Cup is scheduled for the final week of November, and it will have to compete for media attention and viewership against the might of FIFA. Most likely, the ‘world cup of tennis’, which has been slowly sliding into irrelevance, will get next to none of either.

There are countless other major events taking place in the world of sport for this final quarter of 2022, so buckle up. Try to get some sleep. Enjoy this world class action, some of it even being played in Australia.

It’s going to be one hell of a ride.
